Re: Draft Discussion

NICK Naitanui the slider on Saturday? Not going in the top three?

No, it's not likely, that's true, but it's an indication of the apparently bizarre scenarios that AFL clubs play with in the week leading up to the draft.

The Tigers were surprised when Alex Rance slipped through to No.18 last year, and the club is getting ready for more unexpected players slipping through this year.

Richmond recruiting manager Francis Jackson is living by the motto "expect the unexpected", and true to that, he's suggesting that while the club is preparing its "what-if" scenarios, there's already information suggesting an upset brewing.

"That's what we try and talk about this week, and that's what we're doing today," he said on Wednesday.

"There's something else that you wouldn't think possible, that mightn't be beyond the realms of possibility for Saturday.

"And that's why we like to be prepared and have everything down pat, because if you do deviate from your philosophy, sometimes you get pushed into decisions that you haven't given the correct amount of time to and you find yourself in trouble, so we try to cover all those bases.

"So there could be a possible upset in the wind, but I'm not even sure myself exactly what it is. But it could be."

The Tigers get to call their first number with the eighth pick, and Jackson said they were ready for anything after they got Rance at 18 last year.

"We've done our list and our priority order, but sometimes the unexpected might crop up – a player might slide dramatically that you hadn't really considered, and you would find it hard to believe someone might be there at, for instance, our pick eight, when they might be one of the top couple, or the same thing could happen in the second round.

"This is my third draft, and it's taught me to expect the unexpected.

"We play 'what happens if?' What happens if Naitanui falls to us?

"That's what happened to us last year with Alex Rance – we took him at pick 18 and clearly thought he'd be gone by then.

"That's part of the excitement of draft day – years of planning, and the unexpected can still jump up."

Re: Draft Discussion

I would be happy if we only took one onballer. We already have Thomson added from last year and hopefully Cogs as well. I am happy with Vickery and Post and would like top see another KPP player and perhaps a small forward / midfielder with the other pick. With the this being the last uncompromised draft for some years, I think it makes sense to take 17 yrs olds with picks 58 & 70 as they can't be taken in the rookie draft where both Cockie and Hislop could be taken there if we were still keen on them.

Re: Draft Discussion

Sibosado going at 44 plays on my worst fears about giving up 42. Thomson would want to be good because Siba will be a star.

Makes no sense if his going to be so good then surely he would be picked up higher.

Re: Draft Discussion

1st - Vickery or Hartlett
2nd - Mckernan or Trengrove
4th - Hislop
5th - Cousins

Rookie list

Meyer and Gourdis

Me = SMILING

I reckon it will be something like:

1. Vickery/Hartlett
2. Post/Suban
3. Sidosado/Cockie
4. Cousins/Hislop

Re: Draft Discussion

I'd say

8: Vickery.....let's face it, Hartlett won't be there (I'm trying not to be disappointed :p)

26: Suban/Post

58: Cockie/Jetta/Motlop/Sibosado/Brown

70: Cousins/Hislop/Cockshell/Cahill/Rockliff

Re: Draft Discussion

8: Vickery, if he's there we should grab him he's exactly what we need. I think there is no need to say more about him.

26: Nick Suban, we need a small defender badly. Did a hell of a good job on Yarran in the championships.

58: Best available mid

70: Best available

It's got to the point that if Vickery is not there at 8 I will be very disappointed!

Sounds pretty much ideal for us so the pessimist in me is worried that Port will stuff us up by picking him. :(

Hello Hartlett?

Re: Draft Discussion

Remember how good Gourdis looked in his highlights last year?

Don't jump to conclusions over a tall player who can take a mark in a highlights package.

No Trengove? That's a bit of a surprise.

as the burgatron said.....we're also looking at Shiels (very underaged onballer) with 58. i think i would take him if we already got vickery and post

as for 70, best available,

Re: Draft Discussion

I think Richmond would do better taking Rockliff than Hislop anyone else agree

Here here,
I love the way Rockliff plays.

Rather give him a shot then some punk a second chance

Re: Draft Discussion

How come the thread on Bugatron's draft got mixed in here. I don't have a problem in general with combining threads, but Burgo generally has a bit more credibility than the average punter on Bigfooty and deserved a thread on its own. No offence to any of the posters who have posted in here, but I couldn't be bothered wading through 380 posts to see the ones discussing Burgos views.

Eh I'm more interested in Emma Quayle's opinions to be honest. At least she's out there showing interest and watching players.

Burgo just seems to wander up once a year with a list that he probably got from scouring forums to begin with. ;)

Also since the Burgan draft was only released today you wouldnt have 380 to work through to find them all.

(I didnt move them here though btw but i agree with it.)

Re: Draft Discussion

Emma Quayle's got my man Trengove ranked no.4. Doesn't seem we're even interested in him, which is hugely disappointing. He's everything we need I reckon. Can play KP back or forward, and ruck, is quick, aggressive, a leader, a super mark, and has great goal sense. He'll probably be gone to Carlton or Essendon before our pick, but if he ain't he's my first choice, even if Vickery or Hartlett are there too.

Totally agree,
i read that rockliff was the TAC cup leading goal kicker this year (not a 100% this is true) but if it is, he knows where the sticks are so thats :thumbsu: in my book

but i wont be too judgmental of any of our picks till at least they have done 1 preseason with an AFL club

Re: Draft Discussion

8 - looks like it will be a hard pick for even us to stuff up in this year's draft whatever happens , this pick is is our one true "best available regardless of position" pick.

26 - I don't really know, this is probably our most vital pick in terms of fulfilling specific needs given the almost "can't lose" quality of the first round choices.(Though personally, I think Natanui is the biggest gamble of the lot.)

58 & 70 are purely speculative picks, I think you have a licence to take punts you wouldn't (and shouldn't) on 8 & 26. Half the time picks that high don't make it anyway. These usually aren't blokes that are'nt going to make or break a list or directly affect your flag chances (and really if you're relying on these picks to get you over the line, you're either in serious trouble or at the very beginning of a total re-build , in which case you'd probably have lower picks than 58 & 70 at the 3rd & 4th round.) Bearing that in mind...
58 -Sibasado (flashy, exciting, could go either way highlight reel type, but really, the same could be said of Natanui.)
70 - Cousins (if he's still there. won't get a crack at a player of this quality, this high/low , this cheap, probably ever again.):thumbsu:
