Re: Darling's attitude, this article might help allay some fears, and also partly explains his dip in form.

Just because a young kid has made a couple of mistakes doesn't make him a w***er. I know I did some stuff I later regretted when I was 17.

To me he comes across as a good kid, and not just from the article. I was talking to a classmate at uni a few weeks ago who lives in his street and from what she said, he sounded like a top bloke.

On the height "issue", I think beatlesmith has covered it well and truly. When a bloke has talent, an inch of height makes zero difference.

Tbh I do like the idea of trying to fill the club with generally good blokes, I'd like to think we can avoid the Milnes of the world and still pick up very good players and have a good culture at the club.

Yeah I'd love a team full of Ashley Hansen and Mark Nicoski types...

The beauty of a Football club, indeed any Club in society, is how the different types of people come together in search of a common goal. Let's draft based on ability, not personality, please.

Ahh but we'd love some more Shueys. I'm just saying given some pretty even matched players talent/potential wise I think its fair enough to consider their personalities, at least to weed out the really bad ones (not saying Darling is one of these).

The problem is he's been poor all season. He's not justified selection at 4 and concerns over his athletic ability have real foundations.

He has been beaten by quality kids that naturally developed at a later date, no reason to make excuses. He just isnt worth pick 4.

Daniel Rich circa 2008?

Wow, according to that article there are a lot of "brilliant" players

Conca the late bolter ala Sheppard last year? (for bigfooty recruiters anyway).

What are people's thoughts about Conca?

What was his sprint time? I think you'll find he didn't test at the Draft combine because of injury.
I'm much more inclined to trust vision of him which shows that he is in fact very quick, as all reports of him have described

I think you'll find I know Polec didnt test. I also think you'll find he's done numerous testing over the past 2yrs at AIS and at his SANFL club. If you watch him he doesnt play that quick - its more that he runs aggressively with the ball and backs himself. You can do that with alot more success at SANFL than AFL because the opposition at generally slower and also less fit so can chase as effectively as game goes on. I still like him as a player but if you want an elite paced wingman - hes not the guy.

If Polec was quick then he would be the one but he tests worse than nearly all over mids in that range which is not good for an outside player is it.

Yep, he wasnt at the combine, and he is quick. Heard that he ran 20m in 2.97 at the beginning of this year, preseason, when he was nowhere near his peak. And, as mentioned above, just watching him you can tell how quick he is.

West Coast set to take Jack Darling with pick 4

West Coast is set to pounce on West Perth Youngster Jack Darling with it's fourth pick in the November drfat according to today's Herald Sun.

I reckon I'll back their judgement on this one if they do.

As far as I'm aware, quotes from the staff suggest otherwise. There's no real need for us to play mind games since we essentially have the #1 pick.

Rehash of a story on Perthnow, same story on the Eagles site

"With that first pick, where they live doesn't come into it," he said, with one of Victorian pair Andrew Gaff or Dyson Heppell expected to be recruited with the club's first pick.

It's very frustrating watching a press conference and then seeing the total misinterpretation that appears in the media. I used to think the journos were deliberately manipulating things to make the story more interesting, but now I'm convinced they are just plain stupid and simply misinterpret what is being said.

It's great now technology has reached a point where we can just watch the press conferences ourselves - makes journos a bit redundant.

If Darling doesn't slide to 26, I've now got my heart set on Tyler Chalwell at 28! If you haven't yet seen the footage of him here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkIkb1NYNnw
I'm a massive fan, kid has everything! Great skills, strong mark, good speed... he can even back-up in the ruck. He's only 193cm but that's taller than Lynch and Chalwell has much better leap (88cm standing vertical jump!), so he can definitely ruck as well.

Also, Aaron Sweet looks fantastic here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tawNIkHodNw&feature=related
Lots of pace and great skills, really takes the game on. Another reason why we HAVE to delist Hansen after the ND, anyone of him, I Stevens, Houlihan, Blight and others would be much more valuable on the list then Ashley "Pauline" Hansen.

I'm still trying to think of a reason why Heppell wouldn't be best available..

I'll let you guys know if I come up with anything

Problem is Chalwell is he's too short to ruck and a CHB not a forward.

It's beyond me how you've struggled to wrap your head around this so far, but we wouldn't be drafting Chalwell so he could be a specialist ruckman.

He'd be a key defender who could pinch-hit in the ruck if desperately required, both as a 4th/5th in line back-up ruckman on the playing list, and possibly to relieve Naitanui for 5min each quarter. For this he is tall enough, just like Lynch, at 192cm, is tall enough.

It's simply handy bonus on top of the package he already offers.
