We definitely need another ruckman as back up. I'm thinking we should rookie Luke Adams, Wayde Skipper, Michael Rix or Paul Johnson (Ex-Eagle, just de-listed by Melbourne, only).

Given Johnson asked to be traded home because he was home sick so doubt we would want to draft him again, that and he's shit.

And it'll probably end up being pick 30/31 if as expected Brisbane use their compensation pick, and either Richmond or Geelong do.

Also, Adam Varcoe (brother of Travis) has been delisted by Geelong. Worth a look?

While i can see north and richmond using theirs i doubt brisbane will. Already have 4 picks in the top 31 and only 5 list spaces for the draft. 4 if they want to use the psd at all.

I don't know what their list numbers are in regards to picks but surely after the mass exodus and champions getting older they must see the signs for a rebuild.

They have two compo picks don't they, reckon they will use one of them.

You need 5 rucks - it's getting the age balance right that is important.

Another rookie around 18 - possible a F/Ruck mix - and another around 22/23 that can sit on the rookie list.

As an example - Freo have Sandi, Clarke, MJ, Bradley and now Griffen.

They would have drafted Griffen - not so much to play many games - but to avoid the situation they had this year when silvagni was forced to ruck.

This is all because clubs know the days of the 2nd ruckman are quickly coming to an end, so there's no longer any need for more than 4 ruckmen on a list.

Geelong delisted Adam Varcoe. I would prefer a Travis Varcoe lookalike than JON imo. If they are at all similar and it's just injuries holding him back - maybe bring him over.

Actually Hawthorn had 6 rucks on their list - they dumped 2 and picked up another. So they are now at 5 ruckmen - which seems to be the accepted balance around the league.

I agree we don't need 5 straight ruckmen - as it stands I consider Lynch a ruckman ion our list - but we need to have 5 guys who can ruck - whether it be pinch hitting or not. Because you don't want your thoroughbreds forced to do it. Jared Brennan as an example has copped two major injuries whist rucking. Brutes like Jamar make a sport of trying to injure guys who can't protect themselves.

Does Rix want to play and put his career on hold? He seems rather comfortable in his corporate job. Though, I guess you can kind of do both.

No idea, I've just heard talk that the Eagles are looking at him. Plenty of other options around though.

Hopefully we pick up KP player who can at least pinch-hit. We've lost a couple of these in recent times - Staker had done it before, and Notte had been doing it at WAFL level. Chalwell has apparently spent a bit of time in rucking in Colts..

He has a big leap. got an 88 cm running leap at the WA combine which equaled the best from the National combine, he also got a 14.6 beeb which was second only to Menagolas huge 15.5

Given he spent the whole season played out of his normal position at CHB and made the colts team of year as a ruck. It would be easy to presume he would be a probable late ND or early rookie selection as opposed to a second round pick.

Watched a few of the highlight Video on AFL of the draftee on the weekend and the players to impress were
Darling - ready made, big and strong - just does the little things - 1%ers, brings other into the game.
Anderoli - so smooth, so quick, lovely kicking action, and second efforts

I don't think it matters. 193cm is simply not big enough to be a genuine AFL ruck regardless of leap.

I think with the current trend of "useable backup rucks", otherwise known as playing one and a half rucks, means that what you want from your backup is for them to contest the ruck. Considering the relatively low percentage of taps to advantage that even the best ruckmen get, this "contest mentality" reflects the lottery nature of such situations.

If someone is strong and sub 200cm, they can do well at boundary throw ins and ball ups like Lynch does. If they also have a good leap they can contest at centre-bounces, so i don't think it is as clear cut as "if you are short (comparatively) you can't ruck".

White was an exception to the rule, but he was a number 1 draft pick.

Naitanui averaged more hitouts in his second year with a bung rucking shoulder then they ever have.

They were essentially utilities used to contest the ruck.

Goodes didn't last because it took too much of a toll on his body and Skipper is pretty poor.

It really depends whether we are talking about a backup ruckman or relief ruckman. We certainly need a backup ruckman who is a genuine ruckman size.

For a relief ruckman we should be looking at someone who has shown very good ability in another position and does OK in the ruck. In which case, I wouldn't call them a backup ruckman.

Goodes was never a ruckman

Just because he went up for the taps - it's like saying Adam Cooney was a ruckman because he beat Cox once.

NN got significantly more hitouts as a back-up ruckman carrying a shoulder injury than Goodes got in his 1st brownlow year. Which I might add was nearly double his next best year.

We will take at least one tall and if we haven't taken one by our last pick he would certainly be in the mix. Very athletic for a big guy and strong overhead. But if we take him I think we take him as a forward prospect. If we want another tall defender I think they go with someone like Litherland.
