i was wondering what peoples thoughts were.

would there be a chance for a regional player eg. Western Region football leauge club like Altona to get picked up though the seniors or would they have to be more playing with a VFL club.

I know a guy, who has a good job with good pay, plays local footy and gets a fare bit of $$$ but just doesn't have time to put the boots on for a vfl club. what would his chances be?

I'm pretty sure the Geelong VFL take people through ameature leagues. I'm fairly sure Matthew Egan and Scott D Thompson both played for South Barwon in the Geelong Football League prior to playing for Geelong VFL.

Slim to none. If he was good enough he more than likely would have been invited to a VFL club by an AFL recruiter. Rarely does a play go from suburban footy to AFL without being tested in the VFL though it can happen. James Gwilt comes to mind.

Odd that you should raise it here- you're North and your mate is 'Altona' Yes, no hope unless you go through VFL. Having said that, clubs like Geelong are really starting to look at mature age recruits as good prospects, escpecially outside of the first round of the draft.

Max Rooke was a kid from Casterton waaay out west and either his old man or grandpa sent tapes of him playing to the club and he was given a shot via the rookie draft, but he was only 18 and i suspect he was given a shot because he had guts not because he was a stand out player. If your mate is younger than 22 and good enough he has as much chance as any bloke who plays for a semi amateur side. But by good we are talking mass domination every single game to even be considered for a spot in the reserves.

I'd say if he isn't interested in playing in at least trying out for a VFL side then thinking he's gonna walk into an AFL club is dreaming of the highest regard.

Plus i also think its odd this thread is by a North supporter.

reason this was written in this forum, was due to being a western suburbs club i thought maybe out west ie bulldogs, geelong would find interest in the thread. not on the roos board.

Matty Egan was actually from Melbourne and came to Geelong because James Kelly was good mates with him and thought he was good enough.

Scott Thompson was South Barwon and played well for the VFL and got noticed by the Roos. I'm pretty sure Geelong has a pre-season for the best players from the GFL, BFL and possibly GDFL to see who could top up the VFL side. Thompson was one of these and took advantage of it.

If this bloke is from Altona the Cats probably won't take him. They look for more local talent so they can stay at home and their workplaces but still play VFL at the drop of a hat when needed.
