Draft limbo.

You will lose kids who fall by the way side with no school footy and less enjoyable work like VFL/WAFL/SANFL games but little pay who then chase dollars or normal jobs and just give up the ghost.

Many people quit footy post 18 even ones who could of potentially forged a good state career and possibly later another shot at AFL rookie selection.

We are not like the USA which has a very good college system in place to keep the structure around the youths before the transition to pro leagues.

If they were to go down that route then it needs to be done properly not much diff between a 18 and 19 yo imo.

Any increase in age should also see an official under 21s introduced (AFL sponsored) Draft eligible at 20 with TV coverage of said comp (sponsors etc), rookie esque size contracts for those in the "minor" league.

Might be state based sides ie an SA Metro, SA Country, WA Metro, WA Country, NT, QLD, NSW, VIC Metro, VIC Country. 9 team comp playing twice a year and finals, or extended TAC comp to u21s.

I agree with that, but you will still have the same number of AFL players, so you will gain other kids who are keener and more footy focussed. And I think you will get more kids go from Under 18s into senior footy because they will still be chasing the draft dream. Once in senior footy, they will be more likely to stay, thus lower leagues will be stronger and thus the game as a whole will be stronger. That's my theory any way.

Same number of afl players doesn't mean same quality.

You would lose the Dane Swan types.

Or you would lose Dane Swans and Jordan Degoeys for Blair's and Maxwell's.

Yeah real great result.
Swanny was a loose canon, but he was a footy head from pure footy pedigree. He's not one that I htink we would have lost, but I do get your point and agree with it to an extent.

Ultimately, I'd like to see it capped at one 18 year old drafted per team, like it used to be for a while with 17 year olds. I reckon that way you'd get the best of both worlds. You'd still see Year 1 of guys like Stepho. The most talented like Degoey wouldn't be lost to the game. Less kids would be chewed up and spat out due to maturity issues And you'd strengthen numbers in lower leagues because you'd have more kids moving into lower league seniors because they'd still consider themselves as a shot at being drafted.

Now that we've resolved that, let's solve covid 19.

The fairest way is weighted lottery system, everyone has a chance at selecting pick 1 or pick 18 (increased odds based of previous ladder but not guaranteed), if your lucky well so be it.
if that happens somehow hawthorn will benefit.

the history of these things like when zoning got introduced they got the plumb area (logic suggest that should have been ) St Kilda off in the boondocks for their zone.

How do they benefit more then any other team?

Its not zoning. It's having extra balls in a round to increase odds of lower selection based off ladder finish.

But it doesn't garauntee you will get pick 1 or 2 or 3.

Once your pick has been locked you are removed from the round.

Gives variance to it in a year when we don't know who is shit and who's not.

The picks are tied to the team who traded they weren't guaranteed any selection (we see teams go from bottom 8 to top 4 all the time and conversely top 4 to bottom 8), so you do the lottery as per normal no need to change it.
The traded picks are tied to the teams who are drawn each round so if Carlton traded it and round 1 they get selected pick 4 that pick is then tied to Adelaide conversely they maybe unlucky and have Carlton not picked till 10... If they are perceived to benefit or lose out from it so be it.

So yes.
