Draft: Michael Hurley

I don't think he'll go top 10.

Maybe we might use our 2nd selection on him (whatever that might be).

Why is that Merv?

Because of his draft camp results.

I didn't want him because he was versatile, i wanted him because we need a FB and if his draft results are as bad as i have been led to believe they are then i don't think he is the FB we need.

I have a tendency to agree, especially with the results of Jack Watts, if that is going to be the bench mark going forward for KPF then Hurley could find himself in trouble. Speaking of KPB's, I cant find any results on Trengrove so maybe he didn’t go that well either.

I looked up Pears results from last year and he got a 2.95 for the 20m, which is a good result for a kid his size. maybe he can become the full back we need going forward and we can draft a blue chip midfielder.

I dont think Trengrove was invited

Any thoughts?

Then there's this PT, from the Port board...

For whatever you think this is worth ...

I was speaking to a member of the Northern Knights coaching staff who told me that he would normally see someone from Port maybe 5 or 6 times a year and Mark Williams himself once perhaps.

This year Port have had someone at Knights games nearly every week and he says Williams would have been there "half a dozen" times at least.

This is true. He has been told by Port staff that if they still have pick 4 by the end of the week, and if Mick Hurley is still available, that his name will be read out.

It's very slow..
Shifter was saying on one of his draft camp reviews that ruckmen average about 3.10
Too much of a question mark, we should not pick him up!!

Hurley is a natural footballer as opposed to an athlete, takes pack marks kicks either foot 50 plus metres. He is a little tubby and i'm sure that when he has a full afl pre season that will disappear. As i have said before he is quality both as a footballer and person, not easy to find.

His 20 meter sprint time was not as bad as some expected so if we wan't to go defender first then he is the player.
I am with GS. As much as i rate Hurely i think class in the midfield needs to be looked at first.

I have to retract this statement.
When it was suggested he did a 3.01 i thought well i can live with that (hence the above statement) but 3.11 hmmmmm.
3.11 very ordinary. Whoever drafts him may want to look at him as a CHF now as there is no way you could line him up on Fev or Buddy with that 20 meter sprint time.
Still rate the kids playing ability and overall game but he may have to make it as a forward, which he has shown he can do a number of times.
Out of contention for pick 5 for me.

The question is would he need to? I would suspect that Fev and Buddy would be taken by Ryder and Pears anyway. I suspect that the amount of teams that would have enough athletic talls to hurt us would be low.

Hmmm - some Knowledgeable posters are starting to cool on Hurley.. the time is a worry.. especially when we compare that to Pears.

I still believe that Pears is the man who can play at FB for us in the coming years, if Hurley is not our man...

Many players have hired an Athletics coach to improve their sprint times.

You only have to look at the example of Campbell Brown.

I am certain that Hurley will consider this option if he is as dedicated as we are lead to believe.

How much can you improve your 20m sprint time?

I doubt it would be anything significant, although I'm probably wrong

Fev and Buddy play mostly out of the square, which is where Hurley will be stationed.

With a time of 3.11 well he would be ripped apart on a lead by a fast leading forward.

The way footy is going these days most of your forwards are going to be your tall athletic types - Even Fevola who is more of a traditional stay at home FF is lightning.

I'm still backing Pears to become our FB...everyone was harping over Hurley yet he is only 1cm taller than Pears - hardly a significant difference.

Fletcher and Ryder have pace over 20m,but regularly have 'bags of goals', kicked on them.

And Ryder and Fletcher would be considered quickish defenders.

Is pace off the mark that important ?

Where does Ryder have 'bags' kicked against him every week?

He's been taken to the cleaners IMO only 2-4 times this season; for a 20 year old undersized KPP thats a good effort considering he normally stands the best KP forwards in the game.

Fletcher is in the twilight of his career and is no where near the player he was.

Our midfielders are also very lazy in their efforts to block leading space when we don't have the ball

You dismiss too many variables

As for your question of is pace really that important? Well I guess we'll find out come draft day - If we pass up on Hurley well then there's your answer.

It is for a defender. Why do you think Mal retired.
Think of how many goals Fletcher would have had kicked on him if he did not have that bit of closing speed that allowed him to reach in and punch the ball away.
The kid can improve his sprint time, most of the kids do once they get onto AFL lists but he is coming from a long way back.
