Nothing like getting an early start on next year's draft prospects with the announcement of the SA U18 Academy Squad today. Surprised not to see giant Ruck prospect Ruben Flinn's name not amongst the list? Brodie Grundy's brother Riley sounds like an athletic prospect just like his brother at 195cm with a 2.91 20m sprint time. New coach Tony Bamford taking over from Sticks Phillips in 2018.

Pudney equalled newly-drafted Andrew Brayshaw’s mark of Level 22-4 at this year’s AFL Combine in the Yo-Yo Test while also winning the 2km time trial in the time of just over six minutes.

Despite measuring in at 195cm, Riley Grundy – the younger brother of Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy – led the way with a time of 2.91 seconds for the 20m sprint.

Kysaiah Pickett, the nephew of Norm Smith Medallist Byron Pickett, posted the best time in the Agility Test of 7.89 seconds while Norwood’s Kade Chandler (90 cm Standing/95cm Running) and Sturt’s Mihail Lochowiak (90 Running) registered the best scores in the Vertical Jump tests.

Speaking on SANFL Radio, Bamford praised Norwood’s Dylan Stephens, who despite being an underage player next year, finished second in the 2km time trial and third in the Vertical Jump.

I know we pump up SA kids every year but I cannot remember this level of positive talk about a cluster of our footballers ever.

Could be some slide records broken here
If only we were finishing down the bottom of the ladder...

Do the poo-er have all their picks next year?

If even half of the SA kids continue on their current trajectory then we will end up with a very good one.

WTF is wrong with parents and the names they give their kids. James Langley must feel like the kid that got left behind at xmas

Hah, I remember going to a pre season game many years ago, checking out the new players and thinking "I must be getting old, I'm watching a kid called Tyson playing footy.

Now Rory is the most common name in the team and I'm all excited that we have Darcy on our list. Still, Taylor will bring them back to Earth

Bicks what's the birthday cutoff? I noticed Hatley is born late October

On [device_name] using BigFooty.com mobile app
December 31..
Age is not considered by lot of the people that don't follow the draft closely, it's quite high on the agenda of recruiters though.

Take our Lachie Murphy if he'd been born 3 weeks later he'd have been eligible for U18's this year with a birth date of 04/12/98

Is a member of our academy and was a bloody good under 12 to 14 year old (have not seen him play since)
Do we still have him as an Academy member?

Yes, Along with his brother Anzac, (Named Anzac to honour his Grandfather Arthur Walker)

Wonder if Russell Rigney is that great little Sturt Rover of the 60's Roger Rigney's grandson or related, playing for the same club and from the Riverland.

Can find the goals this kid...

Would be surprised if they were not related.
Also, do you know if Roger Rigney lived around Waikerie way. Just found out a Roger Harrison Rigney born 04 Oct 1945 passed away in Berri Hospital recently believe he was Ngarrindjeri Nation.

Not him, he would have been 14 when started playing

From Bicks link , started with Sturt in 1959

Roger 'Wombat' Rigney and Roger Dunn were in the 1966 premiership team that started their golden run. This was when rovers were rovers ie. short, squat, in and under players who were always at the bottom of the pack and always rested in a forward pocket opposite the resting ruckman, with the ruck rover resting in a back pocket on the opposition resting ruck. Don't know his age but I think he's still with us though
