What are your first priorities in the draft? (ie 1st round pick)
Midfielder, Ruckman, KP forward/defender, utility, small forward

Yes to all, except maybe key forward. I hope we just draft the best available, drafting for specific weaknesses has a lot of drawbacks. Would we bypass another Riewoldt just to get a speedy midfielder? That's the situatuion that can arise.

Our first pick will be a midfielder. Probably a tall, athletic midfielder. Hopefully we don't get caught up in the hype of pace though, and remember that the player needs to be able to kick the ball.

If we use 4 picks, I'd imagine we'd take 2 mids, 1 tall defender and either a medium forward or a developing ruckman.

Ruck. I agree, select the best person available. If it's somebody who can play in the ruck, excellent. If the best person there is a full foward, great, and so on.

Nick Dal Santo said a midfielder (when asked this exact question on before the game)

1st key defender
2nd either another KD or midfielder depending on quality
the rest fill up with midfielders
Unless there's a ruckman who'll be the next Cox available at our pick, I wouldn't bother drafting one.

St kilda need to trade aggressively. The current team is not going to improve, there are only 4 non tradeables:

Riewoldt
Hayes
S Fisher
Kosi

The problem is, players like the clarkes, ball, maguire, dal santo have lost their currency and are seen as damaged goods.

St Kilda need to aggressively go after paul haselby who will be on the market this season and brent reilly type players with polish

laughable. del santo, for one, was a huge target from carlton. Would not want to trade many people, perhaps some fringe players.

Our form has been good over the last half of the season, now we are more familiar with our new game plan.

This is not really the time to be defending us after missing the finals, but if we can get some more fitness together with a full preseason, we will be able to have some legs left in the last quarter. That will give us another three to four wins next season.

Goddard will be back, there is the polish and maybe even Gardiner, and maybe, maybe even Hamill. That is not a bad three ins.

We need another backman to cover Max, McGuire has a busted leg so is still recovering and will be better.
Harvey's and Gehrig's decisions will be important for the trade, but not crucial.

It is not dire straights yet, and I am sure StKildadon is sick of putting up the age stats on our core group, but it is still okay.

No no no.

Armitage should be a gun in waiting. Geary and eddy will develop. Howard has pace and Garruba should be rookie listed.

Pick 8 or 9 - best available player. Pick for positions with the later picks.

S Fisher is our next CHB with Maguire at FB. If we want S Fisher to play that rebounding defender role, we need to draft/trade another key position defender. Downside is an 18yo KPD will take years to develop.
Hows James Wall going for Casey? (199cm, 89kg, 21 next season)

In terms of drafting:
Should we trade our 1st pick: unsure.
My targets would be: a developing ruckman to compliment Gardiner and a goal kicking midfielder with a bit of pace. Not sure if there's any KP defenders on the market.
Ideal would be Travis Johnstone or Cameron Wood.
Wood is Brisbane's no3 ruckman and T Johnstone may look to be traded as part of Melbourne's rebuilding phase. (He's 28 next year, same age as Hayes, Baker, Gardiner)
Perhaps look at Sherman or Sylvia as defensive forwards??

Reluctant to give up pick no8-9 though.

Who cares! I'm sick of footy. Injury has killed us this year. An explosive midfielder has to be drafted or traded for. Someone with x-factor, ala Danyle Pearce (not that he is up for trade of course). And maybe a quality ruckman, Charman, Minson or Hale are possibilities. Key backs are not so much of a concern nowadays, as we have plenty of depth here (provided we don't have too many injuries).

Then log off! ;)

A key position back would have got us to the finals. Lynch would not have beaten us last week. Max is getting injured, that is not going to reduce it occurance, unfortunately.

I suspect that RL will draft some long-term prospects, will trade very little, and will keep as many players as possible. For all the bagging we've given Blake, Brookes, Rix, Fiora, and countless others, VERY, VERY few of them will go. Why? It's the stability thing I mention in another thread. Lyon knows he's onto a good thing - there's a good bunch of players, who with fitness and a stable environment will become a very powerful force.

As much as i love big trades and mix ups i unfortunately think Persevering Saint is bang on the money. Although when Lyon did come in he did seem keen to make a few trades with Gardiner, Birss and we were one of the more active trading teams. I know it is a long shot but who here would trade a straight swap Dal for Fev?

Rance is the obvious first round draft choice, unless we trade for a key defender (unlikely). Hudghton doesn't have long left, we need to get a replacement now.

Not me. We have several tall forward options already waiting, Kosi the obvious, Brooks, Watts. If we do trade it should be for a ruck, a key defender and/or a pacey, line-breaking midfielder.

haselby proves to be a very interesting prospect

elite ball winner and still only 26. only problem is injurys have started to creep up on him. I expect that he wont be at freo next season. If we could get him for our second round pick (unlikely, but freo arent happy with him and his value is low after club suspensions and they are some 150k apart in contract negiotiations) i think it would be very good, but we cannot! trade our first pick!

A fit Luke Ball will make everyone remember just how good he was in 2004/05. Watching Joel Selwood this year was very reminicent of Ball in his first few years.

I like the sound of Rance as a key position defender, especially with Max still having at least one year left (he missed last pre season, that's why he struggled all year). That would give time for Rance to settle in, play a few games in 08 as a tall back flanker, then start to slot into the key possies in 09.

I reckon Jarryd Allen will get some time as the 3rd tall forward, he definately looked good in the pre season. Armitage will have a proper pre season under his belt & should get 10+ games, with Geary & Eddy's development continuing at VFL level unless one or both get promoted.

I'd like to see this team take the park at some stage in 08;

B. Sam Fisher Max Hudgton Steve Baker
HB. David Armitage Matt Maguire Alex Rance (if drafted)
C. Nick Dal Santo Lenny Hayes Leigh Montagna
HF. Xavier Clarke Nick Riewoldt Brendon Goddard
F. Stephen Milne Justin Kositzchke Jarryd Allen
R. Michael Gardiner Jason Gram Luke Ball
I. Robert Harvey Leigh Fisher Raph Clarke Aaron Hamill (I wish!)

Missed a few I know..

IN: S Gilbert, A Fiora
you forgot Gilbert, let me explain about Fiora
This has been his best season yet and deserves a place in our 22 on 2007 form.

OUT: L Fisher, J Allen
Fisher coz he wont be in our 22, allen only because he hasn't had a full year at casey and isn't fully up to it yet(elbow)

If Hamill isn't fit Watts in.
