Hopefully one drops for us. I think trying to nab Adelaide's 14 (swapping 18) would have seen us def get one of those 3...but 18 may see us fall agonisingly short.

Not that I know anything really lol - just an uneducated supporters hunch :o

If they are gone i am starting to warm to aaron young

Patrick Karnezis at #18 please.

191 cms, nice disposal, can take a grab, moves nicely, x factor.

... and the fact that he is Greek, therefore he automatically has a good work ethic (save for the olympics).

I imagine Patrick to attack the ball something like this:

I also found another great article about Patrick Karnezis and his up bringing and intensive training regime:

As soon as a child was born in Sparta, the mother would wash it with wine, in order to make sure that it was strong. If the child was weak, it would die soon. Later it was brought by his father to the elders, who inspected carefully the newborn infant. If they found that the child was deformed or weakly, they threw it into Kaiada, the so called Apothetae, a chiasm at a cliff, of the mount Taygetos.

When the child completed the age of seven, it was taken from his mother and given to the state. A rigorous discipline and mainly military type education, the so-called Agoge, commenced, lasting twelve years.

And didn't the Greeks all get nude and lather themselves in Olive Oil at the ancient Olympics? I probably wouldn't want the locker next to this guy if he came to Carlton :p

That's a tricky question when the gc factor means some funny things can happen with the draft order. I would be happy with mccarthy, darling or watson

Given I am solidly in the Best Available camp, I have to say I have been having my doubts over Watson. He has a great game sense and is big-bodied, but he didn't seem fast at all when I was watching (TAC GF). Mostly covers it by knowing where the ball will go, but do you think he may be exposed at AFL level? I cringe to think of Watson on a hard running or pacy forward who would burn him on the lead.

McCarthy I like quite a bit but I think he will be gone by 18, Suns, Melbourne, Geelong could all take him.

Darling has a tonne of potential but could slide quite a bit this year. What is the deal here? Not participating in the Combine hurts here, but will he slide to us?

Also I have quite a lot of appreciation for Hallahans game if the others are gone at 18 is he a chance, likewise to slip to 33

Am I justified in my interpretation? Or am off the mark?

I have the same niggles about Watson, his decision making, kicking and footy smarts are top notch though.... would have to take the bad with the good.....and hope you can get the match ups right. A good example was the APS v AGSV game, Steven May burnt Watson on the lead on most occasions, ended up kicking about 3 IIRC, but Watson would have had the ball almost 40 times and was a general down back, repelling incursions adnauseum . in the TAC GF you mentioned, Marusic turned Watson easily in the first half (and Marusic is hardly Buddy material), but Watson lifted (or adapted) and won most contests after that. I like Hallahan's hardness, but he's a bit injury prone and one-paced, more an option for 33 for mine.

The other side of the coin is that if we are targeting a tall KPD, then what quality is likely to be on offer later in the draft?

What's your obsession?

Pretty sure 2 weeks after I said it was going to happen it was on the back page of the herald sun.....

Why don't you get back to your paper round and save up for a new camera lens

The argument that Watson isn't perfect also applies to the mids who will be available at pick 18 because clubs passed on them.

Yet no one is talking them down.

It annoys me that recruiters look for upside, athleticism and potential, yet not one club thought Barlow could play to the level of a national draft pick. Sometimes people can't see the forest for the trees because they're looking for the perfect footballer.

Hopefully we look for more Lucases and less Griggs.

Nail. On. Head!

"Upside" is the current buzzword. Whilst it has obvious merit, sometimes you've also got to go with the guy that has the runs on the board.

Hampson is the very definition of this. HUGE upside, athletic freak, but really yet to prove that he can play at AFL level. M. Barlow is the flipside of this. Not overly athletic, but a great footy brain and a footy PLAYER.

Watson, to me at least, falls into this latter category. He has proven he CAN play. He HAS the KPD build. And given he is still only 18 and learning, well then he also has upside. It would be folly to pass on someone who has the runs on the board, and gamble on yet another "project player" because the "could" become something special.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

right.....so applying your logic, why do you get jumpy when people point out his weaknesses????

I'ts a circular and moot argument.

his straight line pace is ok....although I'd like to see the splits for 5 and 10 sec...agility would be the main knock.

Do you think he may be just a little too heavy for his age right now?
May have not have the strength nor got used to lugging around 96kg.

Maybe go a little leaner and build the muscle back to get to that weight again?

I'm no bio-mechanist, but I'm guessing that would be the strategy. It's funny, I'm not necessarily saying I wouldn't pick him, but it's good to see the group-think move in for the kill swiftly ;)

Because Watson is tawl and we have to get a big man to win a flag.

Don't you nose nuthink?

Sack Wayne Whose!

Nathan Brown is suddenly the second coming of Silvagni after playing a role within Collingwood's structure in a belting.

It's amazing how good you look if Riewoldt has beaten you on the lead, yet you have teammates hitting your man in the side and getting numbers at the drop of the ball.

I'd take Reid ahead of Brown.

McCarthy >>>>> Watson for the same reasons.

Whoever we get at #18 will be flawed in some way. That's why he'll still be there at #18.But he'll still be a nice chance at being a topliner.

We've just gotta have fun with our own analysis and opinions and then sit back and back Wayne Hughes in and hope for the best.

At #18 i'd be happy with any of Watson,McCarthy,Darling,Hallihan,Cook and a few others.

EP has hinted that Watson is our preferred at #18. I'd be quite happy with that.

What i'm personally hoping for is if Hughes can work a way to get Hallihan, who is just what we need(top player, top young leader, tough ballwinner, good vision and disposal) AND any of the KP guys mentioned at picks #18 and #33.

Any of the better KP prospects and Hallihan will suit me fine.

So is his pace as big of an issue as people are making out?

If so I don't know why he's a top 20 prospect.

I remember there being questions marks about Hurley's pace but he's done well and would be handy at the club. If you're looking at a potential KPD
you don't want one that is treacle slow but every backman will get done on the lead if the ball comes in quickly no matter how quick they are.

Reading the play, knowing when to mark and when to spoil and delivering the ball well out of defense by foot would far out rank serious pace in my book.

Yeah let's just throw Setanta in our backline and that will magically solve our need for a KPD

The guy does not know what he's doing and he will leak goals. We have Buckley coming next year, for once let's make getting a DECENT KPP into our team via the draft our priority.

However, IF we do go for another mid, it MUST be an inside mid. Someone who will put his head over the ball and win it at all costs that has good disposal and decision making. We got rid of Hadley, we've lost Grigg, McLean isn't a guarantee to come good. ALL the responsibility is left to Judd and as he's getting older, it will become harder for him to do it on his own.

The only problem is, it is highly doubtful that a tough inside mid with decent disposal and decision making will be available at pick 18. A lot of clubs will want to add that type of player to their list and they aren't very common either.

Agree with all of this.:thumbsu:

I haven't been hyping up mids though (maybe Hallahan). Midfielders available around our pick are likely to have obvious flaws, Prestia's height, Hallahan's injury history etc. The draft isn't going to throw up many perfect packages outside the top 10, usually because having no downside is what clubs look for

Still you want a defender to have good closing speed, it allows him to play in a zone and close down the space. I think modern day football is moving slightly away from massive tank defenders to speed, play reading ability.

Hurley has a multitude of attributes that can outweigh his lack of speed. The guy is a pure beast in the contest, kicks with both feet better than almost any other player, let alone someone of his height and has exceptional ability to read the play.

Is Watson a surer bet than Lance Whitnall? Lance was a man mountain at 17, dominated the u18s. Unfortunately at that bulk as a teenager he was the wrong body shape to sustain a career in modern footy. Injuries set in and poor lance was in decline from age 21.

I'm basing this solely on mw's youtube form but there seem parallels. Mccarthy seemed more agile and hence perhaps a better long range prospect.

If Smedts is gone by 18, I'm now of the opinion that we should get two KPP with our first two picks. Because I'm a rebel.

Any of Watson/Mccarthy/Mitchell/Darling/Hartigan (@ 41)/Whoever is buzzworthy/Gordon

I just like the idea of doing that for once.

Actually, perfect draft for me is Smedts/Mitchell/Hartigan.
