Impossible to predict a #18 pick for obvious reasons. No doubt we'll do the usual - i.e. prepare a ranked list of about 5-6 players. Really hope we stick with our long standing best-talent available criteria with first round picks, rather than a needs-based selection. The aim here is to unearth a superstar gamebreaker. I don't care where they play.

:)

imagine if smith and watson are free to pick at pick 18 for us, who would u choose. imagine smiths dads heart if that happened

Re-cap of Paul Daffey's live chat
Paul Daffey: Hi Lachlan,

Carlton need a key backman. I reckon they might go for Matt Watson at 18.
Paul Daffey: Hi Chris,
I frowned when I read your Brian Lake comparison, but on reflection it's not far from the mark. I don't think Watson has Lake's magnificent judgement in the air, but he gets his team out of trouble seemingly without raising a sweat. I think he'll go in the first round. Carlton at 18 might take him.

I had to open it in IE.

Not sold yet.

Same here. I'm not entirely comfortable with using our first pick on Smith if that does eventuate, he has only played a total of 6 VFL games so doesn't have that much exposed form. He's quick and his disposal is okay but I wouldn't use our first pick.

I had the same doubts, but that was probably because I was trying to convince myself that I wanted other players. If Smith had been in that sort of form as a Bullants player, we would have been rapt to have him on our list. Lewis Jetta was possibly last year's Isaac Smith after he moved to Perth from Bunbury to play with Swan Districts.

Smith will be a fine player.

Adelaide could draft tall again
"With any of your picks you still look at the next best player on the list, but you always have an eye to your needs," Rendell told afc.com.au.

"Our needs aren't great for talls [because] we have done that planning over the last few years. In saying that, if there is a star tall there that we rate highly, then you have to think about taking them.

"We're not writing anyone off at the moment. If someone spills through, we can live with taking a tall."

"We'll get a good player at 14 and hopefully sneak one at 62. We'll be crossing them off as we go along and see what we're left with,"
Adelaide could draft tall again

There's going to be some epic bumping of posts if they pick a tall after we were told 14 was reserved for a mid.

I wouldn't have a clue one way or the other. I just like what I've been reading - a Hill/Jetta type would complement our side nicely.

Splendini?

Why is the draft on a Thursday this year? Hasn't it always been a Saturday?

Trust the AFL to schedule it for the day of my (only) exam.

Hmmm...seems it's being broadcast at 7pm. So we're going with the countdown of the top 10?

It was Thursday last year as well.

From what ive seen (i.e. youtube) and read, Id take Smith over Watson if both were available at 18.

And yes, Im aware that ive been screaming for a KPP.

But by jeebers that Smith looks good from what little Ive seen.

That Goal at 3:20 in his highlights package from 50 on the burst -wow, just wow. The guys chasing him looked like they were stuck in treacle.

One bloke is a 70m player and the other just kicks it 70m and hits...watch the youtube highlights of the '09 tac final...watto kicks a 60m canon that is pron

Splendini?

He's a quicker version of Kade Simpson, and probably has a little more penetration with his left foot. He would be a good acquisition to our side, but if we believe the rumours through trade period that we were keen on Trengove and Talia, I would suggest the club are going to use #18 on a tall.

Reckon we have enough mids to rotate through the midfield - time to address our needs at either end of the ground.

Hey guys I dont know if this has been done but I thought it interesting to look at which teams have picks before us.

Gold Coast – 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13
West Coast – 4
Brisbane – 5
Richmond – 6
Essendon – 8
Melbourne – 12
Adelaide – 14
Geelong – 15
Pt Adelaide – 16
NM – 17

I guess what I find interesting about this is where by normally at pick 18 every team has a dip before it comes to our turn, its only really half the teams in the comp and all of them only get 1 pick (besides Gold Coast) so I just think that teams will be forced to pick what is best suited to them.

What am I trying to say here... maybe that we are more inclined to get something we want. I think Gold Coast are going to be taking mostly best availables.

For some reason this makes me more confident there will be a few sliders meaning that we will pick up someone good. The mail seems to be on Watson and from all accounts id be happy with him as a pick up.

I dunno guys, what are your thoughts?

Depends on whether Gold Coast draft for structure or best available. It would change the whole draft.

There are enough teams with different needs that a KPP would fall to our pick.

Gold Coast and Geelong would really want McCarthy/Watson at some point.

I'm OK with them and don't consider Cook a reach.

Still prefer Smedts. :)

I actually thing GC will go the other way.

They'll add three very talented young mids to Ablett + Rischa with 1, 2 and 3, and be looking for KPP types with their other picks.

Would not be surprised at all if they looked for 2 KPP types at a minimum before it gets to us.

They'd be mad to pass up Day in the top 3 picks

From my research and also phantom drafts really have the following talls going, and really the only way we wouldnt get one is if it went down something like this -

Sam Day - 196cm (Gold Coast - pick 3)
Tom Lynch - 196cm (Gold Coast - pick 10 / Ess - pick 8)
Patrick McCarthy - 194cm (Gold Coast - pick 11)
Jack Darling - 190cm (*roughie* - maybe Melbourne - pick 12 / Could slide)
Watson - 193cm (Geelong - pick 15)
Lucas Cook - 194cm (Maybe NM - pick 17)

That still leaves -

Seb Tape - 191cm

Irrespective, and according to EP, we will go for best available KP player in this draft and I reckon we will get one, and will be good for us.

Looking forward to Thursday.

Cheers.

I still feel like we're missing a bit of speed through the wings and middle. Army plays deeper and while Russell and Bower are good rebounders, they're not true ball carriers through the wing. Judd normally has about 8 people hanging off him. That just leaves Simpson with real pace and carry.....but I don't know if adding Smith is just a luxury when, as you say, we've got more pressing needs.

Just wondering maybe splendini could answer this... We've all talked alot about the #18 pick but what about...#34 and 42? well 35 and 43 now?
what would you like out of those?
