We have Walker to carry the ball with his speed and endurance.

Garlett and Yarran will go alright down the track.

I believe Buckley has some pace and carries the ball.

We don't really don't need a Tape who is just 191 cms.

Tape sounds a similar player to Kris Massie who was his U18 coach at Glenelg.

Massie wasn't big enough to be anything more than a pinch hitter as a KPD, yet was quick and could rebound.

Carlton doesn't need any more third tall defenders.

Rather we get a KPF or elite kick.

I believe i saw a Tape-presti comparison, hes a negater. And jamo usually does that quite well.
Tape seems to be getting a bit of talk as Geelong and maybe a few other clubs start talking and its creating a snowball effect.
I think theres more needs than a negater.

Im led to believe the preference is/or is very simlar too:
Mcarthy, Smith, Watson, Tape.
This of course is unless a gem slips through (eg: Darling, Lynch etc), which would prompt a rethink.
Tape is the one who has really come up the rankings of late, and may be a good chance to be picked ahead of Watson if the draft goes to plan.
It WILL be a tall at 18, unless Smith pops through or some unbelievable slide happens from one of the top 10 targets.
Also looks as if we will be taking a Mature Age Player from the second tier (VFL, WAFL etc) with pick 67(ish). Apparently a pick will be left for the PSD.

I am lead to believe that you're just taking educated guesses and have covered your bases nicely. We will go tall unless a short we like drops, well thanks for stating the obvious.

Just wondering maybe splendini could answer this... We've all talked alot about the #18 pick but what about...#34 and 42? well 35 and 43 now?
what would you like out of those?

Can I say best available without it sounding like a cop out? And good users and decision makers...if some clubs pick for need a couple of good ones might shake loose

Shane O'Sullivan said that Vance and Massie would grow to be KPP height.

They didn't.

Tape might be a Sam Gilbert.

Or a Sam Fisher if he has the set of balls that Gilbert lacks.

Bower is 193 cms and rebounds, yet isn't capable of taking the power KPF.

Tape is only a centimetre taller than Walker rebounds and runs off talls.

Pffft!

We're not crying out for another player like this after we recruited Laidler.

We even knocked back the offer of Everitt for Walker.

Just saw this on The Age's webpage.

Young bloke Lucas offers a bit too.

Which box doesn't Jacobs tick?

"He made a really big impact with us and he's done amazingly well to juggle all the different things he's had to," O'Connor says.

"It's a pretty full schedule for a lot of the boys especially if they have leadership roles like Ben did.

"We find that the kids who are most organised and are doing well in their studies and other areas of their life are also successful on the field; it mostly walks hand in hand and it certainly did with Ben."

"His kicking has been absolutely outstanding this year. He can kick a ball 60m-plus and he is very effective with his long kicks, but this year he has also lowered his vision a bit and really taken his short passing to another level. I think the South Australia game over there in the carnival where he had 47 touches really highlighted that."

"It was a disappointment, but it was something that sparked a bit more motivation in me to come back and prove some people wrong," he says.

"I never doubted myself once. I always thought I would get drafted if I did the work and proved to people that I was good enough. I knew I had it in me so that was probably the main thing that kept me going.

"I don't think I'd be where I am now if I hadn't of had those disappointments."

Jacobs had the help of former Fitzroy and Adelaide coach Robert Shaw, his coach at Brighton, as he set about putting a plan in place that ensured joy and not disappointment would be his overriding emotion on draft day.

He worked hard with former Essendon, and recently-appointed Team GWS, fitness guru John Quinn and O'Connor says the evidence of that work came to the fore during a stunning season that saw him earn All Australian honours at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

What are your best qualities?

My kicking, physicality and ball-winning ability.

What needs work?

I need to constantly improve my touch and my speed.

Which player in the AFL do you most admire, and why?

Luke Hodge, due to his physicality and kicking, which are two traits I pride myself on. I also like his versatility and ability to play a lot of positions.

Why do you want to be an AFL footballer?

To experience such a professional environment, to mix it with the best in my chosen field.

Thread needs more love for Jacobs.

Gibbs, Jacobs and Yarran kicking it to our forwards would be a sight to see.

A player like Jacobs would also address one of our needs.

This draft appears to be so even, I'm looking forward to getting another good player and possibly a slider after clubs draft for need. Unfortunately that also applies to our nearest rivals who could also get the "perfect fit" if we pick from Jacobs, Smith or Watson.

Blues look to Watson

Carlton will go for Calder Cannons centre half-back Matt Watson at 18.

Watson is a 195-centimetre defender with a faultless left foot. In terms of kicking to position over long distances, he was the standout player at the under-18 championships.

Just as significantly, he managed to curtail such star opponents as Sam Day (SA), Jack Darling (WA) and Lucas Cook (Vic Country).

Carlton is in dire need of a key defender. Watson fits the bill.

Blues look to Watson

He would....RELEASE GIBBS !!!!!!!

The General may not like me simply going along with the group think, or does he, no he doesn't, hang on yes he does....I'd be comfortable with this on the little I know of the draft prospects. Someone who can give a big **** you to the zones and clusters by virtue of having a cannon where a leg should be.

The interesting bit for me will be what eventuates at our second pick. Could a Conca or a Hallahan possibly slide, or will another tempting tall still be about. Will be good to see what Hughes can do with a couple of solid mid range picks.

Who is the top rated Taswegian in the draft this year?

If we draft Watson in 20 years time his left leg will be amputated, bronzed and mounted out the front entrance of Visy.

Doubt Conca will slide, Hallahan might.

Many will tell you the top rated Tassie is Josh Green....not sure I agree.

:D yes please. i reckon with watson n laidler in the team, gibbs will be released

It is important to remember that even Watson may take time to develop into a possible backline solution. You would have to give the kid one year to adapt to the AFL and then maybe by his 3rd year he will step up to take control of our backline.

Ang the second?

Apparently Melbourne are strongly considering taking Jacobs with 12.
What's with all these teams drafting mids and not KPP?

They'd be mad to pass on Lynch, Gorringe or Darling if they were available.

They've still got James Strauss who is a good kick like Jacobs.

This is what I like with the selection of Watson. He will become the general of our defense with his ability to read the play, help his team mates and his cannon of a leg. We need someone that wants to take control and commands a leadership role and I think Watson could be it.

Obviously he would need time to fill this role but I'd expect 12 games out of him next year but we cannot forget that it would still be a development year for him. He would also.....RELEASE GIBBS

Off topic warning:

It just seems that many here have Laidler nestled into HB flank already.
I'm not sure the door will left quite that ajar for him just yet.

At a distance I'd supect both Lucas and Davies to be ahead of him even at this stage.

Lucas may yet be everything we wanted Gibbs to be serving us from HBF, and maybe even better.
Kid just reads the ball so very well.

IIRC Ratten stated after trade week that he expects Laidler and Collins to both have an immediate impact, and play most games next season.

Considering those comments, I don't think it's too outlandish a statement to include Laidler in the 22.

Admittedly, if I were to do a best 22 currently, he would be on the periphery. All things considered, I wouldn't be dismissing Laidler (and Collins) playing plenty next season, from early on as well.

We'll all glean a lot through the pre-season training and whoever makes it to our starting 22 come round one, will be well deserved.

It's just that Laidler has not played many more games than Davies and we haven't even mentioned Scotland yet, along with the one I think will make HBF his own, in Lucas.
Tuohy can yet be a surprise for us this year even though odds may be against him and if Austin holds up and Bower goes to his rightful flank, it will be difficult for Laidler to get that start come round 1.

Collins may have even further to travel to get a start come round 1.

We'll see.

Its still possible that Gibbs will continue to be the best option at HBF and Lucas becomes the midfielder we want Gibbs to be released to be, at least in the short term. ..

Guns may kill me, but the likes of Ellard may slowly be removed from the team. I think Scotland and Carrazzo will slowly feel the heat on their position on the team.

If AJ does not slightly life his game, he could be pushed hard as well. He did not progress as he would have expected in 2010. It will be good to have some pressure on the older Carlton members to hold their place.

Looks like we will be taking Watson at 18 and i think that is a good decisioon, we have been crying for a CHB since Sexton retired!!
