I love the look of seb tape or pat mcCarthy from SA i would love either one at the blues not convinced about watson Im a blues suppoter just on my brother inlaws computer so dont rip my head of for commenting on blues forum

would love blues to pick up mat watson with pick 18

his a big unit, who looks strong and has a deadly left foot.

most teams already have key defenders and would most likely target midfeilders, wing players, half forward and full forward players

with jamison and watson on the key forwards and bower as third man, with armfield and russel and laidler, thats a pretty good defensive team that can match up with all the different types of forward players

I guess that black and white coloured team can produce a good player here and there......

Still much prefer the lovely blue and white of the Sharks. :)

I adopted Claremont when I moved here. Living in Cottesloe and for the other obvious reason:

lol i know he has brain washed my sister and all there kids to go for collingwood i hate it i dont go near them when pies playing
Good Tasmanian lad like you should make up your own BigFooty account so you don't have to suffer the shame of posting as a Collingwood supporter :thumbsu:

Is Watson more like to slide, or to 'bolt' as they say?

From a no-nothing stand point, I am quite impressed with reports about his marking and endurance.

Will watch his tapes soon, but wouldn't mind a big body like him to take monster CHFs.

I can't help but feel that Watson isn't a CHB, and therefore won't fill that void. Seems like more of a FB with a very advanced rebounding game (Lake springs to mind). McCarthy is more of the cHB type but he will take a while to get his body in the right order for AFL level. I am actually a big fan of Tape who can take taller opponents and has quite a good defensive game, with some nice rebounding as well.

I also can't shake the feeling that although we need more depth in good talls that we might forsake a quality small with our first pick. If we selected a very good inside mid @ 18 (say the heavens opened and Caddy slid) and then say Chalwell and Litherland at 34 and 42 would anyone else be pretty happy with the draft? I think I would.

Knowing Hughes though our picks outside the first round will be left field

Emma Quayle's top 25.

The golden boys
This list is my personal rankings — not where I think players will be picked.

Apologies this year to midfielders Cam Guthrie, Mitch Hallahan, Tom Liberatore and Josh Green, the crafty Kieran Harper, forwards Lucas Cook and Luke Mitchell, and defender Jamie Cripps, the next group in line.
The golden boys

If those names aren't in Quayle's top 25, then we stand a very good chance to get two or three good players in this draft.

The golden boys
20. PAT McCARTHY (196cm)

Reads the play well and can take a mark. Spent time in the ruck when younger and can also go forward and have an influence. Skilful, athletic and kind of soothing: can calm things down by taking a mark then stepping back to assess things. Has a real Carlton look about him and is a chance for the Blues at No. 18.

21. JACK DARLING

There are many questions about Darling — his height as a key forward, his midfield potential, his off-field mishaps — but he can take a mark, kick a goal, and play with aggression. Athletically he ticks all the boxes, with his speed and endurance right up there.

Could go to Carlton at No. 18.

22. MATTHEW WATSON

The one most likely to play genuinely at centre half-back. His key feature, though, is his kicking — he picks where the ball's going, spoils, gets it back and thumps it to centre half-forward. There's no need for a midfield when he's at his best.

Carlton is a strong chance at No. 18
The golden boys

Really like the sound of McCarthy if he's 196 cms, athletic, skilful and versatile.

Probably won't get through to 18.

The draft order could be quite surprising for the BF group think if it goes the way Emma has hinted:

1. Swallow
2. Bennell
3. Day
4. Gaff
5. Heppell
6. Polec
7.Caddy
8. Atley
9. Conca
10. Tape
11. Lynch
12. Gorringe
13. Pitt
14. B. Smith
15. I. Smith
16. Lycett
17. Smedts
18. McCarthy
19. Watson
20. Darling
21. Lamb
22. Wallis
23. Jacobs
24. Prestia
25. Parker

Thats a basic prediction based on Emma's fantastic artcile

I understand why people question Darling, but he's the same height as Fevola who survived by having a great kick, soft hands and quick leads because he could read the play. Yet Fevola lacks intensity, endurance, second efforts and the leadership that makes someone a champion (Kernahan).

If we pick Darling, then we'd be pretty certain his attitude and size is fine.

Melbourne will go for a KPF, ruck or mid, not a defender.

If McCarthy slides, I reckon Geelong and even North could pounce to get another athletic CHB.

Get the feeling we might land Watson or Darling.

Fevola would weep if we gave Darling the number 25.

Doesn't it always go the way Emma hints?
She does clearly state that this is her preferred list, not a phantom draft.

I know but some of the selections she implies are a little left field:

Conca @ 6/ 9,10,11 (went 34 in BF mock)
Tape @ 9/10/11, 15, very latest 21 (went 36 or so in the BF mock)
Darling not being wanted by GC throws him further down the order (was @ 9 in Mock)
Pitt @ 9,10,11, almost certainly 13 (17 in BF mock)
Lycett not going past Port @ 16 (he was 21 in mock)

Clearly there is a gap between the Draft watchers here and Emma's opinion.

McCarthy or Darling id like.. Watson isnt the kind of footballer that will suit where footy is headingl

Darling doesn't look like a manchild to my eyes.

Looks more of an athletic type like White who is roughly the same height.

Lloyd and Fevola would probably be labelled too short if they were coming through today.

A few AFL pre-seasons will bring the athlete out in him.

McIntosh and Goddard were labelled plodders early on in their careers.

If Darling can play full forward or rotate with Henderson, then Waite can conceivably play CHB with White, Austin, Jamison and Bower helping out.

Grateful to have Kreuzer, Warnock and Hampson after reading Quayle's profiles of Gorringe and Lycett. It's probably daylight to the next ruck who will be taken, so versatile rucks will be extremely hard to find in the next draft.
