Five live draft selections
“We are looking forward to adding five additional players to our list,” Carlton’s National Recruiting Manager, Wayne Hughes told carltonfc.com.au

“With the introduction of the new franchise we are selecting from what is a compromised draft,” he said.

“But I have no doubt the talent is out there, we are in the same position as the other clubs and I am confident that we will be able to secure a number of players capable of taking us to the next level.”
Five live draft selections

First time I've made my thoughts known on this years drafting.

Who I want at 18 depends on basically one person; Austin.

It really depends on how the MC view him for the future and to a lesser extent, Waite.

If they still have faith in Austin at CHB and believe he is ready to start making an impact I would be looking at McCarthy as a first preference and will tentatively nominate Darling as my second.

If they are a bit skeptical OR could see him being used potentially as a KPF then I'm Watson all the way.

Injury history alone is enough to suggest Austin's future at the club is up in the air, let alone knowing if he has the talent once he gets an extended run at things.

Watson struggled on a few .
Most clubs today dont have power defenders because the game is a fast moving game.
Someone thinks Hurley will be a superstar... im yet to be convinced.
Teams are getting very good at isolating defenders.. especially slow ones.
Its not about what a defender can do... the game has gone past that.. its about how the team can work defensively as a group all over the park to actually shield defenders.
And then each player has a defensive aspect to his game... each player up the ground that can work defensively will protect the players further back in the park.
Unfortunately we dont have a defensive football team .. singleminded in its efforts to protect Jamo and Bower and make their job easier.
The ball is being whizzed around so quick these days you need players that can cover the ground feet at foot to shield .. protect.. zone.. tackle and get to the contest.. both defensively and offensively.
There are not many 'Gorillla ' type defenders cos not many Gorrilla type forwards taking contested marks these days.
Most of the forward thrusts rely on fluid ball movement and making space.

Youre not going to bring in a BIG body defender for 2 games a year... when in actual fact the problem lies with what the team is doing as one single cohesive defensive unit.

Who are the Swans big bodied defenders?
Freos?

They both finished ahead of us... and wernt supposed to make the finals either.

Someone like Craig Bolton understands being defensive and his team understand how to give him a chop out.
Is he 188cm tall???

Gorilla defenders needed is a fallacy................

Get me fast moving forwards who can create space.. and a bunch of gun midfielders working well both ways between the arcs.. and id take that any day of the week.Cos thats where the game is played.. won and lost!!!

I completely agree. It is unrealistic to put all our hopes on Austin making it as a player with all his injury troubles. Don't get me wrong I would love him to come out and claim a spot in the team but at this stage it seems highly unlikely.

We need some KP stock both forward and back so even if Austin or Casboult make it when we have recruited other KPP we will be in a great position. Buckley to come next year so now is the time to use our first pick on a tall is there that we rate.

Who did Watson struggle on THS? A 'few' isn't really proof of this. You're pretty harsh on Watson IMO.

I saw him play against a speedy outfit being the NT and he didn't seem to struggle. Granted they are not a great team but they are quick and Watson read the play and TBH I didn't even notice his pace or any lack of it.

Problem with a speedy outfit like NT.. is hardly any of them will play AFL.. they play a great brand of footy but its not AFL type... its undisciplined.. and there is hardly any quality height.

Were talking about him not playing against every day TAC forwards... or NT players.. but against the cream of the cream of elite Austalian super athletes.

If you guys cant see how clubs are choosing modern day footballers and how theyre conditioning them to play.....well....

The game is changing rapidly from the teams that the Lions dominated... to what is now almost SAS standard machines...
.. and they then in turn... are conditioned to play a superhuman game with all the little nuances and techniques to gain every inch possible to take them closer t winning a flag.

The game is no longer played between individuals.
Contested ball in a one on one situation is more an oddity than the norm.
Teams are fashioned to work as a phalanx.
They all are a cog within a machine....

We shouldnt be relying on Judd.
We shouldnt be relying in Fev or a forward
We shouldnt be relying on Jamo or Watson.

Its all about the whole of the footy team.. with each player assuming a role as important as the next player.

StKilda do this
Collingwood do this
Swans do this....

the last few flag teams have not had a Gorrilla defender.. and probably no gun forward either....

Just teams that win the ball and use it effectively and understand how to defend across the board.

Geelong are a little different... they had 11 All Australians.

I wasn't aware that Smith has only played 6 VFL games.

Just have to wait & see on Thursday.

Is it televised live on Foxtel?

It is indeed. Live on one of the Fox Sports channels from 7pm.

Make sure you press the red button if you want to watch the actual draft rather than Dunstall's and Pickering's fat heads.

Unless you are into that sort of stuff...

I would like to shoot anyone that considers watching the draft in any other way. Why the hell you would want to miss most of the draft picks and listen to them talk about what it was like for Joe Bloggs to be drafted in 1999 is beyond me.

Just watch each selection as they're picked. Show a short highlights package of the player ~30-60 seconds. Give some information, height, weight and Draft camp results (30 seconds). Then have Shifter talk for ~30-60 seconds about this player.

Force the clubs to take a little time between selections to allow for the TV to show all this information and you're on the way to a half decent draft night.

LRT and Grundy.
Grover, McPharlin and Tarrant, with elements of NSOS.

I think you can fairly say that these play like big bodied defenders.

Grundy is no bigger than Jamo..
LRT u have to be kidding?????

McPharlin the broken down hack... Tarrant missed most of the year... and Grover???

ahh they play LIKE big bodied defenders....

Take Bolton out of the swans lineup... and they would still do ok.. why???

cos they pressure the oppsition.

SO who did he struggle on??

Without hitting the search button or phoning a friend???

Ok one guy who will get drafted ... Darling???

How did i go???

Outmuscled out paced..

now who did he beat???? :)

Funny about elite comps.. coaches work on ways to shut people out.. and if they dont have the speed AND endurance.. theyre obsolete very speedily....

pardon the pun

Thanks MCB.

Seems like we're still waiting for an answer...

he beat Reiwoldt... Franklin... Tippett and Fev matched them for pace with his superior closing speed...

then he outbustled Jonno Brown.....

he has shown he will be more than capable fo doing all this...

plus his super enurance and superior agility means u can use him on the smaller more nimble blokes....

Grundy had a very good first half of the season and LRT is a typically underrated footballer. Then you can add Richards and Bolton to the list; along with some good defenders like Malceski, Kennelly.

Obviously Sydney have well structured teams and flood back to help their defenders.

When Fremantle won a heap of their games they had the likes of McPharlin (who is not a broken down hack), Tarrant (Was close to AA before being injured) and NSOS.

I think you either don't watch AFL football or have your head in the sand. Grundy, LRT, McPharlin, Tarrant, Grover and NSOS are big bodied defenders.

Just because they're not built like brick out houses, does not mean they're not big bodied.

LRT - 194cm 93kgs
Grundy - 192cm 99kgs
McPharlin - 193cm 91kgs
Silvangi - 191cm 90kgs
Tarrant - 193cm 92kg

They all play against the big key defenders.

Really?? He struggle on Darling? U sure?? IIRC they broke even, yet Watson's use had hijm named in the best for Metro. But why let the facts get in the way of your framing effects, availibility heuuristics and rhetorical questions??

Tarrant is 30 years old.Course youll get stronger at 30.. so will Bower Austin and Jamo..
Grundy is not the man that takes the number 1 defender....
LewisRobertsThomas... 91 kilos is not a body on body player.
Silvagni????....... wow!! my point exactly.. probably played more games than Tarrant.. and Freo still finished ahead of us.....

Cool story...

Thats who he has to play against to make a difference... not NT.....

and Splendidi... u mean to say Watson took the underage league by storm rolling everything before him???

No questions on his game...????

Every player has a question on their game.... the question for Watson is ....

Will a player who is bigger then everyone in his competition cos theyre all kids... without real pace... be able to use that as his advantage when he plays against everyone at that weight...???...

His only trick is his kick.... and u can find others that can kick a footy.. and have more tricks...were not looking for the tallest people..

most clubs are doing it with 193 cms agile defenders.. and not too many...

what they are doing is creating a TEAM of defenders who will shield their goals.

You made a statement that Fremantle and Sydney have NO big bodied defenders.

I have given you some names and yet you bring up Tarrant being 30 and of course he will be stronger... Have you just disproved your original statement?

Grundy does not take the number 1 defender, I know he takes the main forward more often than not. I am talking about defenders and not forwards..... Let's assume you made a mistake, if Grundy does not take the main forward, please explain to me who has been taking the main forwards?
LRT - He is surprisingly good in one on one contests, even with his weight, you know kinda like a poor mans version of Fletcher.
Silvangi, just because you don't really know much about the kid, does not mean he is bad. He was a mature aged defender that showed great improvement and defensive ability.

Maybe forget about this argument and get back to proving how Watson has been beaten by all the top draft forwards.

yes u did give me examples of why freo and sydney finished above us... their big bodied CHBs KPD whose names u suppplied..

Thank you!!......

In the league today there are maybe 6 gun KP forwards.. maybe 10....

they have been amassed over 10 years of drafts...and father sons.

Watson is a defender in this years draft... there might be 2 guns that one day might grow to be gun forwards.
The question is......... really..... Does Watson have what it takes to make a significant difference for his team in the AFL being who he is and what he has .....???

His tricks...

Players to make it need a number of tricks.... as we all know most players dont survive the 4 year cut.... the are a bunch of young KPP that looked ok in the TAC... but didnt have what it takes in the AFL... the AFL is littered with KPD strewn about the place who never made it... Luke Molan ... Livo...

Why???

cos the game is changing so fast that what u take today is obsolete in 5 years....

How would Lance have gone in the 80s???Maybe a great!!!

Come 2005 he was on the scrap heap....
