At 19 would Hartigan really be classified as a mature age player considering they have 19 year olds playing at TAC cup level?

Yes but apart from having long accurate kicking skills, able to read the game, strong overhead marking ability and good leadership qualities what has he got?????

Is he as athletic as Walker and Hampson, and will he look as good in those footy calendars - these are the key indicators you are overlooking.

Hahaha! Exactly! :thumbsu:

Oh good point.....

Lance had his knee replaced...

Mcleod hopes he doesnt...

k

thanks...

:thumbsu:

Athletic machines is what everybody is looking for ... as long as they can play footy....

Oh good point ... lets recruit athletic machines that can play football - are you expecting another Kouta to be there at 18?! :D .....duh - you think maybe every club before us might have the same idea?!:p Nah ... athletes at our pick wil be speculative....recruiting athletes to turn into footballers has a low strike rate ... you want to risk getting another Cal Chambers, Ian Prendergast, Clint Benjamin or David Clarke whilst we can overlook actual footballers?! .....speculate in the third round .... use our first picks to get blokes that can play the game ... not decathletes:thumbsu:

Someone should tell 2010 All Australian Full Back Brian Lake that the game has passed him by and he is obsolete because his main "tricks" are only:

- He reads the play well
- Has good closing speed
- and a great kick

Conversely:
- Has a crap turning circle (gets turned easily)
- Doesn't have good skin folds
- had to work on his tank

Sound familiar. .. Now I am not saying Watson is the next Lake. .. But you cannot ignore good football skills just because someone doesn't match you fantasy wet dream of the perfect clone specimen. ..

if youre giving us a run down on Lake..and then say youre not comparing Lake to Watson. why not give us a run down on Carey too.. and then finish the argument that youre not comparing the two????

Wow!!!

weirdest argument ever....

"Tell me about your mother..."

the club is sweating on this kid if he slips.

unlikely.....!!....

cos he is no watson......

watson might slip....

cos he has everything and he is key position....except he needs to lose weight.. get his endurance up.. learn how to play body on body.. and lacks pace..... but he says in his profile.. best asset... "closing speed"
and the draft camp confirms it...

Appears there aren't too many genuine speedsters and KPP around this year.

The lack of legspeed might explain why clubs chased Tambling, Sherman, Walker and Grigg.

We might get an inside mid at 34 or 42 if it's even and there are more of those around.

Just Day, Lynch, Darling, Watson, McCarthy, Tape, Cook and possibly Mitchell in the first 25 isn't very impressive compared to other good drafts. 2008 had Watts, Hurley, Davis, Johnston, Lynch, Brown, Schoenmakers, Trengove, Post, Jones, Gillies and McKernan picked in the first two rounds.

Stack of rucks taken in 08 with Naitanui, Vickery, Cordy, Clarke & Roughead drafted.

The talls don't appear to be as strong.

Still strange to see McCarthy not even rated in Sheahan's top 30 when he appears to be an athletic and rebounding KPD like Daniel "has to go to Carlton" Talia. The BF group think failed to get McCarthy up to Talia's levels in the eyes of the general public.

Day! Day! Day!

Put it this way.. if were interested in him.. ill be praying like Hurley hes already taken by someone else...

Cos Livo tested well too....

Gun TAC footballer was Livo.

And if Livo had been allowed to play in the forward line like he was recruited to the club for... or had been allowed to develop in the backs instead of being thrown to the wolves like he was... he would have been a much better player for the club.

He is just one of a large number of quality players we got over the Pagan years that were screwed up by inadequate investment in their development.

You don't read too well do you, that might require taking your head out of the sand I guess. .. I never said I wasn't comparing them. .. I said "I'm not saying Watson is the next Lake" and if I have to translate that for you then there is something wrong. ..

What I was doing was showing a clear reason why someone with similar skills of Watson and similar drawbacks is, recognisably the best KPD in the league. .. Which creates an exception to what appears to be your blanket rule on athlete over genuine football skills. ..

The funny part is I'm most likely going to be happy with whoever WH recruits. .. Its just your arguments are so bad I had to respond. ..

Sometimes you have to sit and wonder about THS's arguments... they are usually poorly constructed and without basis in fact. I dont think that he even bothers to ask a small child if his arguments are any good because quite clearly, a small child can argue better than that and have valid reasoning behind it.

i read perfectly well....

you gave us a sinopsis on Lake and then said you arent comparing Watson to Lake... so youre being completely hypothetical in your argument . Thats what youre saying.

KPD early in the draft are often busts.
There are not many gun KPD in drafts... Drum was one i liked a couple of years ago.. even undersized i thought he would make it...but he hasnt so far.
Hard gig making it from the underage comp to AFL .
You need to have everything...

Problem with Watson is he cant play CHB all the time.. or FB all the time.. he cant play on certain players...
So what people are saying here is we should draft a KP guy who u have to keep shuffling around to protect him from this or that.

Now thats what youre not looking for in a KP player.

Ahh the old berate them with tangential arguments and pretend they said stuff they didn't. .. How could I be so silly, I see the error of my ways now so what you are saying here is. ..

You want a guy that will balance three footballs while giving his opponent noogies with his pinky before kicking it out on the full and posing for a club poster. ..

But you say you want an AFL footballer but then say you don't want a footballer. .. make up you mind. .. weird argument. ..

See what I did there? I assume not. .. Maybe Wayne Hughes just needs to draft more Cowbells. ..

Look wood duck or clay pidgeon or whatever....

you centred your whole argument on Lake and what he can and cant do.. and then said youre not comparing Watson to Lake...

and then you say i dont have proper arguments.

Listen.

Is Watson the same player as Lake or not?
Will Watson be as good as Lake.. almost as good as Lake?
Just explain yourself.. cos im not following....

What is the significance of Lake when speaking about an 18 year old Watson?
Was Lake a similar kid to Watson at 18?

Lake was 26 before he made people take notice .
He was ok before but he really came along in the last year or two.
Maybe thats Bower /Austin and Jamo if we can develop them properly.. learn to shield them by applying pressure all over the ground....
And Lake is a great contested mark... Im not sure Watson is.

You centred yours on Watson being slow and regularly beaten by forwards and both points were brought undone by plenty of other posters yet you're still hoping that if you throw enough mud some of it will stick. :o

stick onto what???

im not recruiting Watson... the recruiters are.. and i doubt theyre gunna be swayed by me one way or another.....

are you for real????

lol

you make me giggle more each time Sin City...

yesterday it was about knees... today its about you thinking i am flinging mud at Watson.. i can hardly anticipate what youll come up with tonight.

I have a point of view....
..... its a forum for discussion and argument....
.. thats what i do....
everybody is free to argue whatever they like....

You might think youre the only one allowed to have an argument.. but youre wrong!!! :)

I dont mind who argues or who puts up their ideas..

you on the other hand are focussed on halting discussion and argument.

You should think about that... its really need a good sign about whats going on in your head.

So that's a yes then, you now see that Watson isn't as slow as you thought/hoped and that he hadn't been beaten as easily or as many times as you were saying?

Cheers :thumbsu:

OK Bar heater, wood plank or whatever your name is. .. I'll say it slowly once more:

Brian Lake (the person not the body of water) has similar skills of Watson and similar drawbacks. .. Brian Lake (again the person not the water) shows that football skills (things like kicking, judging the flight of an oval shaped projectile and the ability to close down an opponent) can sometimes make up for pure athleticism (things like running around a track, beep tests and the ability marvel personal trainers). ..

I cannot say that Watson will turn out like Lake, just like you cannot say any other draft prospect will definitely turn out like this or that. .. All we can do is speculate. .. One thing I can say for certain there is room in the game for athletes and there is room in the game for for people with football brains. ..

I do wonder if you're one of those fans that call for athletes and then get frustrated with turn overs but cannot put 2 and 2 together and realise that it is no good simply beating your opponent if you just give it back to them. ..

Ah yes.... so you are comparing Lake and Watson but not really... ok...

Thats what im getting at...

My argument is the game is moving away from guys like Watson.. cos he is a tall that you have to protect often enough...

I know clubs might be thinking he becoes a thrid up tall.. and can work on freeing him up to ddistribute the ball.

But thats not a solid first round pick.

Solid first round is a guy who can play KP every week...

or through the midfield as a frontliner.

Thats what you should be looking for

Footy brains or not... it doesnt matter... wont be putting a brain in a jar and leaving it on a flank.. they still need to be modern AFL ready athletically.

It would be funny if hughes just takes another mid after all of this :D

You have to remember that we have pick 18 here which is usually outside of the first round. We are less likely to pick up a good player than we would have been I'd there were no draft concessions.

THS thinks that if we pick up Watson it is a waste of a pick but doesn't really offer an alternative. On the bright side there has been a bit of success with KPP around the mark we will be selecting at - Pears comes to mind.

Who should we draft THS, because it seems you're looking for a super human football player with no weaknesses?
