Looking at the draft package though, assuming we went with Rich then the best available key back with the next pick, What would've been a better deal; Hurley/Zaharakis or Rich/? ...
I would have thought Rich and Trengove (maybe Lisle), but Port just snatched him from under our noses, so in the end Hurley and Zaharakis isn't such a bad combo.

Neither are all that flash defensively.

I can't wear that..... it's complete rubbish.

Milburn has been a great defender and rebounder for 10+ years... AA + premierships, 200+ games, etc, etc

Harley is captain of one of the best sides ever and is great at defensive marking. Very good at defending over his whole career.... 200+ games, shit load of finals, etc, etc

If you expect guys to be better than that then you are kidding yourself.

Welcome Hurley but why on earth did we not take Rich when we badly need midfielders?

I agree. Any player can become a full back (Greg Anderson excluded) however decent ball winners like Rich are premium and shouldn't be overlooked. Clearly the club has a plan.

Hurley/Zaharakis or Rich-Ziebell/Post

Im sure if Trengrove slipt through to us at 23 the recruiters, while obviously would have rated Hurley, would have thought the VALUE of the combo to be greater.
I hope im wrong though. :thumbsu:

I think he will play forward to be honest though.
Could be a fletch and play down back while running up the ground every now and then for a flourish or two.

Merv stickied four threads in anticipation of the draft.

The one he didn't sticky was the "whinge thread". And it was so obvious too because after every draft the whingers come out for a crack

Knights said that for pick 5 he was following a plan that was in place before he arrived in the job. Replacing key position stock was always on the agenda and he made special note of Fletcher. We have drafted a raft of potential midfielders in previous drafts. Do we keep doing it until Bf is unanimous and forget the other issues?

Every time you guys whinge about rich v Hurley you are only say one thing.
...
You swallowed all the Bf swill on the draft board about Rich. Which really infers your perspective was as short as your posts and the arguments you put forward here. Hurley is a replete footballer and what we needed.

I agree with the statement highlighted in bold, but there is no need for you to be a hypocrite, and whinge about the whingers and also come to a conclusion such as the one highlighted in a different font.

Welcome to the club Michael Hurley and all the best!

I have no problems with us drafting tall- just dont think they got the right one. You can never tell winners of drafts for 3-5 years but we all have opinions of players going into the draft.

I seem to remember that everyone here had a pretty damn big boner for Hurley before the draft camp.

However, then at the draft camp he had a poor 20m sprint and all of a sudden, all talk of Hurley went out the window and suddenly we needed a Rich, Yarran, Zeibell etc.

The fact is that if Hurley ran a 2.8 or 2.9 20m sprint at draft camp, I doubt there would be more than one or two whingers who would be complaining about our selection no matter who we picked up.

Hell if we somehow managed to draft Watts, Hurley, NicNat and Rich, I still reckon there would be people on here having a sook.

Personally, leading up to the draft I was hoping we would go with a midfielder with pick 5, however, I'm very happy we got Hurley.

I'm somewhat disappointed with Zaharkis at pick 23 but that is based on no real knowledge on my part and only on what I've read on forums. I trust that the recruiting and coaching staff have far more of an idea of the players available and who was the best player available and best suited our needs.

Oh at I am loving the fact that we royally ****ed up Carlton's draft plans by taking Hurley, they were waiting to pounce on him at pick 6, no doubt whatsoever!!!

Got a pretty handy midfield now, pity they have nothing resembling a key defender and only have one key forward. They would have been thinking that Hurley was going to be the full back in their next premiership team!!

:D:D:D:D:D

A few people didn't like him after the Champs it must be said.

From someone living afar i am happy to see we picked up a defender, considering how many goals we have had kicked against us the past few years.
We have picked up Prismall for the midfield and i am still not convinced, for better or worse, that cocaine cousins may not be wearing the red and black next year????

i wish we picked hurley coz our bakline is crap

Shame he didn't get that far.;)

A few key forwards wouldn't go astray.

But there's always Brad Fisher...

Knights and Co have resisted the temptation of scooping up Rich and selected a player who is exactly what we need for our developing backline.

Very happy with the choice.

It was a necessary selection and a good selection.

Fletch has already indicated '09 is likley to be his last year, and a succession plan for that is vitally important, makeshift Full Backs are not the go in this day and age, North Melbourne's backline proved that this year. There's the argument that we've got Tayte Pears to replace Fletcher, I don't buy it. I'm a big fan of Tayte, but I think he'd be much more effective in the 3rd tall role with his pace, skills and decision making. I see him as more of a creator than a negator.

Hurley compliments Ryder beautifully, and his kicking skills are more than welcome.

What number are people thinking for Hurls? I think he'd slide into 21 fairly nicely.

People seem to think the KPP take a little longer to develop - thus it makes sense to draft the quality talls before the quality smalls. Get a quality midfielder next year, and he'll peak the same time as Hurley.

Hurley happy at home

NORTHERN Knights defender Michael Hurley is delighted to be staying in Melbourne after being taken with Essendon's first pick in the NAB AFL Draft.

"It was a good honour, and a bit of relief in the end," he told afl.com.au after his selection at No.5 overall.

Like most 18-year-olds, he's more than happy to remain at home with family and friends, and he was thrilled to go so early in the draft.

"Interstate was always a possibility, but I'm just very happy to be staying in Victoria."

Hurley said he was looking forward to slotting in to the AFL environment at Windy Hill with a team full of exciting youngsters, although it was a couple of old hands that he was most looking forward to training and playing with.

"Matthew Knights seems to be a new and exciting coach, so I'm looking forward to that.

"And I'm really looking forward to training with Lloydy (skipper Matthew Lloyd) and Dustin Fletcher."

Hurley is 192cm and 92kg, kicks well with both feet and is highly rated for his attack on the ball and spoiling strength.

The Bombers also selected a couple of other players from the Knights, midfielder David Zaharakis (pick 23) and tall forward Michael Still (pick 55) as well as Tyson Slattery from West Adelaide at pick 67.

If he needs a rhyming nickname I vote surly. That way when he fails to lay a sheppard for Ryder the conversation can go something like this:

Ryder: Why didn't you help me then?!
Hurley: Hey, Surly only looks out for one guy...Surly!
Ryder: Sorry Surly.
Hurley: Shut Up.
