If as has been suggested we get draft picks for Carey instead of a ready made player (which would be inline with the Laidley youth policy), who do you think are the outstanding players in the draft we should be looking at ? assuming we have 2 picks in the top 10.

we might be lucky... I assume that we'd have pick 11 ourselves, and Adelaide has pick 14...

I think we'll end up with Adelaide's first pick + another club's first pick (which Adelaide would have to trade for)

One top ten Plus 11 and 14 (three first rounders all up) is about where I think we'll end up.

I don't necessarily think we will only get draft picks for Carey. Still think it will be a youngish player with a fair bit of potential plus a highish draft pick.

Apparently this draft is a bit crap so there are not going to be too many Judd's or Hodge's just waiting around for draft pick number 11

So do we look at say a Reilly and the Crows first pick, this would still be in line with Laidleys youth policy.

I think you'd be better off going this way as the draft is apparently not too strong.

Although Reilly has not done a whole lot at the Crows as yet, he has plenty of potential and would be worth looking at in my opinion.

Are the roos looking at picking up a key position player or a midfielder?

You have one of the strongest midfield lines in the league, would a Reilly or another youngster be able to fit into the line-up, or would they just be playing good footy in the reserves and not be able to squeeze into the seniors?

I would prefer three first round picks... maybe two would be fine footballers... whereas two first rounders... maybe one is good... just playing the percentages..

Either way there is always going to be risks involved in taking the draft picks over a player who has already shown they have plenty of talent, such as a Brett Burton or a Kane Johnson.

You are certainly in a tough situation at North in my opinion, either go for a quality player who has shown talent or for draft picks, which could either turn out brilliantly or never cut it in the AFL.

Tough choice.

Valid point hawkfan5, but Stevo is ageing and Harris and or Smith will be used in tagging rolls next year and from what I have heard about Reilly he could potentially be used as a small forward if a midfield position was unavailable.

Fair call, but despite our 'strong' midfield, if the likes of Daniel Wells, Brendon Goddard, Stephen Salopek were available come our first drat pick, i personally would take them unless a good key position player becomes available that we cannot take the risk of taking with our later picks. Wonder wot Laidley thinks.

But do we KNOW that Smith and Harris will be tagging? Laidley's youth push might mean he will play these guys as genuine midfielders because that's what they will be in the long term.

Pretty sure Dean Laidley said in his press conference that he will take the BEST AVAILABLE player/s come draft time.

Considering this you would think that the club will try and get as many picks as possible for Carey and pick up the best available talent in the draft despite their position and try and mould them into stars of the future for the club.

Stevo is ageing but he is still a brilliant player and has at least a couple of years left in him.

I just think you have enough talent coming through to not have to worry too much about picking up another midfielder.

I think the way to go would be a key position player such as a Brett Burton to fill the hole that Carey has left.

Its a tough situation, although the Kangaroos are going to get either a top draft pick or a very good proven player, they have to choose one or the other, which may not work for them in the long run.

Quantity of picks is ovverated IMHO.

If you get three picks for a player, thats just two more players you have to delist, and the more you delist, the closer you get to delisting blokes who are on the fringe (instead of just the deadset duds).

With all due respect, saying that we have one of the best midfields in the league is pushing it.
We have a lot of in and under players there (Stevo, Harris, Robbins, Grant, Simmo etc) and not a lot of run. A couple of tall running midfielders is what's needed.

Goddard, Wells, Salopek and McIntosh will be the top 4 drafted this year. Gilham from Oakleigh will be the first tall defender to go. Layc, ock from Tassie could go early as a tall forward, as could Schulz from SA.

The players that get drafted from no 5 to no 30 could be a bit of a lottery. Some players to keep an eye on are Schammer (SA), Shelton (Qld), Raphael Clarke (Xaviers brother), Brennan (NT), Jarrod McVeigh (Mark's brother, NSW), Grima, Treeby, Simpson, Edgcumbe (Eastern Rangers), Crawford, Cosham (Calder), Fisher, Cartledge (Ballarat), Shackleton (Tassie), Stinear, Johnson (Dandenong), O'Sullivan, Tim Walsh (Geoff's son, Northern), Cameron Croad (Trent's brother, Oakleigh), Wunderlich (Gippsland), Tenance (Murray).

Cameron Croad could be an interesting one. I remember reading somewhere that he's more athletic than his brother. Not sure if he has a footy brain or not. If he's got the height and mobility, maybe he could be the one that we pick up and try and turn into a key defender.

If we get a top draft pick from this years draft....Salopek is the pick I want, before anyone else...."awesome ball-winner" was all i had to see to be impressed enough, he's also all-australian and is tall....goddard is the tallest of the rated midfielders, and wells is probably the fastest....but slightest....

Salopek. no.1!
