Let's just make this easy for ourselves and eliminate Setterfield and Bowes

We will have access to one of the following

McCluggage
McGrath
Ainsworth
Taranto
SPS

Anyone of those kids will be a great acquisition

Agreed that we will probably have one of those 5.
But we can't complain about the academy system and not keep them honest .
They will match the bids and we will land our man in any case ...

Agreed, happy to bid on Setterfield, Perryman will also be bid on in the first round. Would be great to have access to their other Academy boys

Surely with everyone's opinions that the top 6 or 7 picks are in flux for draft , Essendon will bid for Setterfield and if it matched no matter as they still get great choice and Brisbane are sure to bid on Bowes ..this is the most interesting draft i can recall ..Lets just hope that in 10 years we talk about this draft for the 3 or 4 hall of famers we picked...

Brisbane supporters are almost certain they won't bid on Bowes. Fair call too because he isn't the 3rd best player in the draft.

Not sure on the accuracy of the rumour - but the idea of young kids threatening to leave interstate clubs, in order to influence where they get drafted, really pisses me off.

At 18 years old, if I'd had the opportunity to go and play sport for a few hundred grand a year in Queensland, I'd have been pretty damn grateful. The AFL needs to give some serious thought to combatting this "go-home" mentality in young players. If you want to play in the national comp, be prepared to move. If you want to guarantee that you stay in Melbourne, sign with a VFL team.

These guys have been groomed from a young age in the system and have had their expectations and egos raised to pretty big heights. No doubt player managers have been in their ears as well- all telling them what they want to hear. Once they get into the system and they are found to be decent players (as opposed to merely on a senior list) then they start to weigh up their options, as they know they are sought after property. They are pampered and overindulged to a degree, but on the other hand the clubs/the system demands total commitment. think of the restrictions on the free time and activities ie whitfield is a good example. Not to mention how physically fit they need to be these days. it is a major commitment. The AFLPA have negotiated this free trade system and the AFL really didnt have much choice given the exponential increase in the amount of money in the game. Its no longer a cottage industry. They had to meet the players half way with regards to restriction of trade.
Its a new world out there for the "best 22" players and will continue to be so. The also rans have to be satisfied with much smaller contracts and to move all over the country just to get onto a list - yet their commitment has to be the same as the stars of the game.

Yes I'm with ya Arrow that too is a very exciting propect, anyone of the kids mentioned will be a great acquisiton.
I'll be bubling right up to the when the numbers oue called out.
Go Baggers

Lions would hope GWS select Taranto but i feel GWS will get Ainsworth to replace Stevie J.
now for one of McCluggage or Taranto to slide to us assuming we are looking at them before SPS, Lions to bid on Bowes to force CG to get him with pick 4

I'd be astonished if McCluggage got to us.

This is how I have been viewing it as well.

End of the day, everyone probably has their preference on ranking these top 5 (and even including others such as Brodie, and I know there are a few Scrimshaw fans).

I personally keep chopping and changing on who I think will be the best fit for Carlton, but when you really take a step back, and of these guys make our list better and provide depth and quality in areas we are lacking.

We are on a winner with whomever falls to us.

I've heard but I just can't (choose not to) believe it.

Just can't be thrilled with that prospect although he could end up the best of the lot........anyway.....

Same. If SPS and/or Taranto are available at 5 I would take them before Scrimshaw.

Scrimshaw is being seriously considered at our pick 5. McCluggage will be gone before our pick.

Thanks for the info.

He personally wouldn't be my choice either, but can see why SOS and Bolton would be keen on someone like Scrimshaw bouncing off halfback and delivering the ball inside 50 ala Birchall.

Absolutely

I know it is hard to make comparisons with current day players, but would people be displeased with the following as an example"

SPS = Daniel Kerr
Or
Taranto = Luke Parker
Or
McCluggage = Trent Cotchin

GC are reportedly strongly interested in Scrimshaw, if we look hard and long enough at him maybe they will take him with pick 4. I would prefer SPS but I like that we are keeping everyone on their toes. Jimmae will be over the moon if we take the Scrim.

Have stated previously that Scrimshaw looks a more aggressive version of Birchall, I also believe he will spend time in the midfield. Having said all that, not my first pick at 5

Is this ground hog day? The Carlton of old?

Thinking of drafting a HBF with a high pick in the hope to turn him into a mid?

Just pick the best available mid!!
To be fair, if you are going to pick a hb in the hope that he will become a mid, this is the kind of player you take. I'm not disagreeing with you but the likes of Heppell, Dangerfield, Fyfe weren't playing midfield at this stage either.

Would not surprise me. Can play forward, back and outside mid. Kicking skills are good, which I think will be a prerequisite in this draft. Still reckon on SPS, think he's a Bolton type and is elite, but Scrimshaw isn't far behind.

BRI and GCS won't pass on Hugh. Still reckon he might go #1. Hearing Jobe Watson is a big chance to retire. His head is no longer in it and the Brownlow saga is the final straw. Hugh fills that hole.
