Of the 6 players listed to be chosen from I would prefer Brodie, followed by SPS, Setterfield and Scrimshaw. Haven't seen any of them play but it does seem to me that Taranto and Hayward have not been starting midfielders at the under-age level. At pick 5 I want someone who is tested as a starting midfielder. If they can't make it there they might still make it as a small forward/defender.

Taranto and Hayward look pretty at the underage level against other juniors. Such players often struggle to convert that prettiness to senior level. An example of this is Yarran, who was a controversial pick 5 in the draft. For the reasons given above I did not want him (preferred Ziebel or Sidebottom). As it happens Yarran justified pick 5 in his playing ability (other, quite unknown factors at the time of his recruiting have now intervened) but he was never as safe a pick as the other 2. The other 4 I am quietely confident will make it as AFL players. Taranto and Hayward are too big a risk for the potential reward.

Scrimshaw is flanker, so more speculative than the 3 you have mentioned above in terms of true midfielder. Although I do believe he will transition as a midfielder, still untried though.

Yarran was never a contested ball winner unlike say Taranto, who is ranked highly for contested possesions and even Hayward has shown he can win his own football, but is a reach at 5 in my opinion

Hayward & Taranto are nothing like Yarran.
Where's this 'look pretty' stuff coming from? Neither Hayward or Taranto are particularly silky or quick. Hell neither are outside mids at all.

Taranto started the year as a forward & built his inside mid game until he played there even in the all stars game.

Hayward is a half forward with great attack on the footy.

Fair point, it is why I have him 4th.

Yaz was just an example. Perhaps Billings would have been a better example. Highly regarded in his draft year as a goal kicking mid but has certainly disappointed to date.

Fyi yazz was pick 6.

This year is carltons first ever pick 5.

Not the first pick 6 we've ****ed up either

Taranto sits comfortably with the likes of SPS and Setterfield.

As for Billings, I wouldn't right him off just yet, he has injury concerns over the last 2 years hampering his output,

We will soon find out what SOS does

Don't think we stuffed up Yarran pick, in full flight he was everything of pick 6.

He'll look back when he's 40 and think he didn't really give it his all and probably be really disappointed though he does have an opportunity to turn it around.

His report card will read like mine, if only he applied himself!!!

Mine said.... Ferris* is so laid back, he's almost horizontal.

Ferris is not living up to his potential.

Ferris would be a much more successful student if not for his laissez-faire attitude.

And that was just from one teacher!

Just found out McGrath is a Canadian.

Any chance of a Cat B International Rookie spot? Can we still keep Sheehan and Korcheck as well?

Surely he'd be Cat A(y)?

Earnt a "like" for the use of the term "laissez-faire" in a draft thread..

Ummm.. you say you have never seen any of them play and then have an opinion on who you think can play ?? Lol

The mystery continues; one minute the choice at 5 seems solid the next Phantoms and board riders speculate about a Mcluggage drop to us. Can't see that happen! Just looking forward to ending the speculation and seeing more young guns in navy blue come Friday. All hail SOS...

Latest seems to be.

1. McGrath - Quayle now running with an article
2. Taranto - Met with them just recently
3. Mcluggage - Wont be able to overlook him
4. SPS - Some cryptic clues on the RTD podcast from Clayton has raised him as a player he was talking about.
5. Ainsworth?

Reminds me back to this post from a guy who gets some Carlton mail now and then...

If true you wonder if all the SPS talk was to get GC to go early on him and leave the player we really wanted.

All speculation of course. Now doubt it will all change before I can even hit "post reply".

Can't really go wrong at 5 with what's on offer. Not as keen on Ainsworth though, but maybe that's me seeing him more as a small forward rather than a midfielder. Reckon he might just be a pocket dynamo as a midfielder - I'll take back what I said before! Certainly wouldn't mind SPS, but a bit worried about his hammies; Taranto might be a Bont type; other than that thought Brodie looked a solid bet (maybe because he's a little bit like Cripps we went cool on him?).
