Is it a real rumour or just a rumour of a rumour? Anyway, if he's good enough for GC he's good enough for us. Sounds like déjà vu of what I said about Harry M.
Haha, probably a rumour of a rumour. I'm a lot more comfortable with Scrimshaw than the Hayward rumour. Scrimshaw is a proven ball winner with serious X-factor. I do have concerns about his midfield ability (we don't need another 3rd tall down back) but if SOS and co are comfortable with him being able to transition into the midfield then I am happy to go with it, could very well become the best player of the draft.

Not sure on the accuracy of the rumour - but the idea of young kids threatening to leave interstate clubs, in order to influence where they get drafted, really pisses me off.

At 18 years old, if I'd had the opportunity to go and play sport for a few hundred grand a year in Queensland, I'd have been pretty damn grateful. The AFL needs to give some serious thought to combatting this "go-home" mentality in young players. If you want to play in the national comp, be prepared to move. If you want to guarantee that you stay in Melbourne, sign with a VFL team.
To be fair, first round draftees would earn maybe $120k if they play 10 or so games in a season, and moving interstate they're probably paying rent or board, having to furnish their place out at least a little, then likely paying for most of their equipment and meals unless they have an apparel sponsor lined up.

While they're taking home a good wage for an 18 year old, there's not a lot of income security there, and there's plenty of expenses. Then there's cashed up 18 year olds living the high life with their spare cash (and that comes in a variety of forms).

Once they're past that initial contract and have established themselves in the 22, then you've probably got a fair point. Club culture has to be a consideration as well.

Scrimshaw is being seriously considered at our pick 5. McCluggage will be gone before our pick.
I asked for rumours, and I got one almost tailor-made for me. :p

Thanks for the info.

He personally wouldn't be my choice either, but can see why SOS and Bolton would be keen on someone like Scrimshaw bouncing off halfback and delivering the ball inside 50 ala Birchall.

Is this ground hog day? The Carlton of old?

Thinking of drafting a HBF with a high pick in the hope to turn him into a mid?

Just pick the best available mid!!

Cannot be pleased picking the lanky flanker that hasn't demonstrated an ability to dominate games.

Nice prospect, but not at 5.
This is the shallow assessment that keeps come up: Birchall clone. He was in the GF winning Sandy team that includes McGrath, Taranto, Florent, Brayshaw and Setterfield (I'm sure I've missed a few there too).

Kinda tough for him to play inside mid when the midfield is that packed and he's a versatile player. No one's questioning McGrath's credentials despite him playing as a running defender for the first half of the season, or Florent despite playing HF the entirety of it. They're all midfield prospects, just shoehorned into roles for a star team. Despite that, and a limited pre-season, he got midfield minutes in the second half of the year.

Please go watch the way he dances around opponents while in traffic and fires out the handball, and tell me he's just a flanker. Please watch him gather the ball off the deck of a pack clean, in one touch, and before anyone can react lasers it 40m, then tell me he's just a flanker.

It's a difficult decision to make at #5, but if Scrimshaw isn't in the conversation you're kidding yourself.

On the surface, it is understandable that people would question the likelihood of adding a kid like Scrimshaw, when most are hoping for a genuine elite midfielder. I also compared Scrimshaw as a more aggressive, urgent, quicker version of Birchall, so I don't think that comparison is shallow. Based on current talent, I do have Taranto & SPS, slightly ahead of Scrimshaw, but I see signs that suggest he will play as an onballer. which is why I rated high going in the top 6

Some people just need time to absorb the concept

Would not surprise me. Can play forward, back and outside mid. Kicking skills are good, which I think will be a prerequisite in this draft. Still reckon on SPS, think he's a Bolton type and is elite, but Scrimshaw isn't far behind.

BRI and GCS won't pass on Hugh. Still reckon he might go #1. Hearing Jobe Watson is a big chance to retire. His head is no longer in it and the Brownlow saga is the final straw. Hugh fills that hole.
As does Setterfield. ..

Scrimshaw is already 193cm so he will have to end up playing kpp more likely than not as he likely still has some growing to do you would think.

You meed some speed and spread to support Cripps otherwise we will end up being too big and too slow.

He's more athletic than Cripps. Comparing him to Bontempelli is actually reasonable. Tested well for agility and decent for sprints, especially considering he's nearing 6'5".

Wasn't the rumour that he didn't pass the no dickheads policy ??

And yet Twomey's piece on him goes out of its way to commend his character.

Heaps of players in the AFL more athletic than Cripps.

Does he play anything like Bont? All I've read is that he's a super specimen of a kid.

I think people need to stop trying to find the next Bont/Fyfe/Cripps.

These guys are once in a generation players, project players rarely work out.
That's what people were trying to say to those who drafted Bont/Fyfe and Cripps.

I remember watching Scrimshaw in the TAC cup grand final and I thought he would likely go top 5, I then saw him live at Punt Rd for the All stars game and he looked good there too (took some nice pack marks right in front of me). Mind you he did bugger all in the national champ games I saw.

If he had've come out and said something along the lines of what Ainsworth said regarding Brisbane, then I am sure he would have been linked there and thus people would perhaps see his worth a bit higher as they would think of him as a pick 3 that may slide.

I'm still favouring SPS over him, but I will be happy with Scrimshaw and I think he has more scope and a higher ceiling than a few of the higher rated picks. It's actually a bit surprising that we haven't really discussed him that much.
