Hey fellas Iv got a solid source over here that says were leaning towards SPS if gold coast skip on him and the others fall as they should.

I know I don't post much , but I thought I should share the info I got today.

Don't shoot the messenger if it turns out otherwise! . Haha

Great news for the Baggers if the outcome is SPS at pick 5 , he's is a very special talent and will be a great addition to the CFC.

Agreed, I wonder what people would think if he turned out to be a McLeod or Burgoyne

Or a Tambling, Jarred Oak-Nic, yarran, Burnell. I wouldn't risk pick 5 on someone we would have to nurture through general adult life, afl football life and living in big smoke. All will be new to him. Just my opinion. Stick with those with solid support systems around them. Less risk.

It's a team sport catering for individuals is not Carltons strong point. Lots of players with talent have left recently... Menzel, fev, yarran, Gibbs(nearly), Garlett to name a few

However i'm naturally a pessimist.

Take Brodie or Taranto. Easy money on 200+player

He says that but he lasted 5 minutes in Sydney which is more like the Melbourne lifestyle as opposed to Perth.

Just read a little further into the article. He actually said that he stuck out the whole term, went home briefly, did some research about schools in Perth (8 hours away), went to Clontarf school and lived in Perth away from his family and home for 4 years. His English is much improved after being raised with his indigenous language (Kriol).

And he wants to come to Melbourne because it is a big footy city.

Would love him at Carlton.

My order of preference given the pool:

McCluggage
McGrath
Ainsworth
Scrimshaw
Bowes
SPS
Setterfield
Taranto
English

FootyProphet's Phantom has McCluggage going to Brisbane at 4 after GC match a bid on Bowes. I don't think Brisbane would bid if McCluggage was on the board, and I don't think GC would match if they did.

GWS would be ******* nuts to pass on McCluggage.
GWS midfield is so strong and deep, McLuggage might be playing forward pocket for his first 4 seasons ... who does GWS want in forward pocket, McLuggage or Ainsworth?

Pace for the sake of pace stands for nothing. Did you ever watch Wilkinson play?

Running flat out without smarts won't help you and we already have Buckley as testament to that.
We do have pace via Boekhorst, Pickett and Cuningham already.....just need the right pieces to fit into the puzzle.

Taranto may not be fast but he thinks quickly. I'll take that attribute every over pace alone, every day of the week.
I think SPS does the run flat out with footy smarts more than just ok? What do you think?

But the nurturing is more or less what we did with Betts and he became an absolute star. SPS starting way further ahead.

Clontarf is a school especially for Indigenous kids. He will find Melbourne very unforgiving and testing racially imho. Too big a gamble at pick 5.
Pick 5 needs to have as close to zero risk factor as possible, simple as that.

It was nevertheless a big move from the Kimberleys. He wasn't sent there, he was motivated enough to research his opportunities and take them.

Where do continual safe picks get us? No club other than the Western Bulldogs were thinking of Bontempelli at pick 4. Yes Carlton has failed with indigenous players too many times in recent years. That is one major reason why Andrew Walker is our new welfare officer. Let's back ourselves to provide support and an environment where SPS and others thrive.

You both raise valid points. But the words, back our selves in, and, we might be able to, scare me.
We have gambled too much over the years with project players etc that I am scarred and want less and less risk factor nowadays.

I think SPS does the run flat out with footy smarts more than just ok? What do you think?

My response was a generalisation and not particular to SPS.
Sometimes we say things like; We need height. We need big bodies. We need speed.

We just need good players/characters for now and then put the cherries on top.
If of course, SPS fits that bill, then take him........but not just because he's fast.

Didn't we join appoint a new development coach with a player welfare role that focuses on first year players who also just happens to be an aboriginal?

Walker might be able to help SPS settle in.

No doubt after Garlett leaving GC, the debate about Aboriginal players wanting to go home will arise.
We may not say it publicly, but there will be talk behind the scenes to some degree at least.

I would be disappointed though should any one, two or ten such incidents sway us from doing what we know to be right for the CFC.
That would be irresponsible as far as I'm concerned.

Take the best player regardless of religion or race and back your systems to work.......otherwise what's the point of putting in place all the mechanisms to foster good team culture?

I was worried with all the talk of us trading pick 5, just kept thinking we still haven't learnt.
It's all good though, SOS has shown he knows what's going on and he will bring in an elite talent with pick 5.
Can't miss really
The likelihood that pick #5 will be an elite talent is a given as this draft is being compared with the 2001 draft, which delivered our own superstar one Chris Judd. The 2001 draft had the likes of Hodge, Ball, Bartel, James Kelly, Stevie J, Sam Mitchell, Montagna, Ablett Jnr, Jarrad Waite, Dane Swan and Brian Lake. That's plenty of high end talent, which means the ability to pick out kids who should have long careers in the AFL, tells us that it's not just first round but second and third the recruiting staff and SOS will need to deliver this year as it is a talented pool.
The other aspect is once these kids are picked up then, that talent then needs to be developed. We are not renowned for our development of kids.
Under BB and SOS their has been a significant shift leaning towards the CFC adapting and coming of age as we were left so far behind the pack.
So no matter which player is drafted with #5, we need to ensure that pick 25 and our third round also deliver us more talent, which will not be known for a few years. Nonetheless at least we now have the confidence within the club to finally see we are definitely on the up.
GO BLUES, building towards 17.

Just wanted to borrow this quote from ferrisb, because it's quite pertinent here.
I used to say Yarran and Menzel were in our top 3 on talent.

Having elite talent is one thing.

Harnessing that talent and translating it into elite performances is a whole other ball game...
This is where Taranto's diligence & professionalism wins me over every time. Taranto's self-motivation means Bolton will rarely, if ever, have to coax, stand over or hold his hand to get the best out of him. When one's nitpicking between 2 or 3 players like we are then it's how they approach their game off the field that may well sway SOS's choice.

Is it fair to say that drafting SPS would be like drafting Daniel Wells?

They seem very similar from what i've seen/read.

Positives
Classy players with good skills, left & right foot, inside/outside midfielders, acceleration to burst from stoppages and weave through traffic, decent footy IQ.

When Wells plays well he transforms North's midfield from looking quite pedestrian to damaging and fluid. Has the ability to be a 'match winner' and create really good passages of play.

Negatives
Inconsistency, injuries.

Apparently SPS didn't have that great a year and while classy, didn't really 'dominate' any games. His average disposals is rather low for a midfielder.
Can't really say SPS will have constant injuries like Wells, though he has had several this year and he has a similar body type...being quite slight.

Will his slight frame hurt him at AFL level? Probably not if we have the right structure...i mean Lachie Hunter & Macrae are pretty slight but the Dogs' playstyle suits them. There are others though like Jack Martin who seem to have struggled against bigger bodies & even Wells until he matured.

Conclusion
So would we be getting a guy who has class and will have match winning moments, but will also go missing at times?

Taranto sounds like he doesnt have the same level of skill and class, but his big finish to the year shows he can lift in big games under pressure, gets more of the ball, has a larger frame that may be more suited for AFL, is a strong mark and has scoreboard impact...like Luke Parker.

If my thoughts are accurate i'd prefer a Taranto type of player than SPS...seems like less of a 'bust' chance but at the same time less 'star' factor so there seems to be an element of risk/reward involved with our decision.
AFL clubs go to the draft each year having a reasonable idea of the drafting order from first to tenth. Clubs also go to the draft with a list of players which they believe is the best fit for their lists. So depending on draft order it's a process of elimination, if the club likes a particular player and that player is available then that players name is called out.
If a particular player that a club had wanted has already been picked up then they go to their wish list and pick the next player whom they would consider best suited to join their list and so forth.
Make no mistake the CFC'S blue print for success is well and truly in motion and more so than ever this is probably the most important player draft and trading period in the new RESET.
Under Brendan Bolton with SOS at his side the clear objective this draft is to build on our midfield stocks.
Our midfield is lacking in talent and looking at fixing the deficiencies on both the inside and outside.
Whether we pick up Tarranto, Brodie, SPS or Scrimshaw with our first, the CFC draft wish list will be finalised over coming weeks and the only thing that is set in stone is the draft order and this alone will determine who gets picked with our first pick at 5.
That being said i also think we should pick Tarranto as he looks to be the one with the highest ceiling and the other appealing attribute he has is his ability to stand up when it counts the most and win a game off his own boot, a very strong string to his bow as realistically he has recently only decided to focus on footy and drop basket ball.

Would 100% chose the kid with work ethic and dedication over the slightly more talented player every time.

In regards to Samo, I wouldn't be worried at all about the home sickness factor.
My friend has become sort of his guardian here in perth after his move down from halls creek , and has sit in on all his scouting interviews and it's true about him preferring a move to Melbourne.
And definitely wanted to avoid perth because of possible extended family/friend distractions down here.

The kid wants to be in the home of football so he can just immerse himself in it with no distractions. And that's a good sign imo.

And now that the Dockers traded away pick 3 that opened the door for us..

I understand your concerns.

For every Tambling, you have a Burgoyne, Rioli, Hill x 2 etc. Player welfare & recruitment has come a long way from the time the likes of a Tambling was drafted.

You can't foresee players leaving, Aish and O'Meara left their original clubs, but did not seek a trade to their home states.

SPS is no less a flight risk, than any other kid, given where he is from, unless a new franchise is handed a licence in Halls Creek, in the short term

Having said all that, I have Taranto slightly in front of SPS for a variety of indicators

Yeah i agree completely.

Local lad, got the size and physical attributes for AFL footy with elite endurance, great sign that he can take a grab and have scoreboard impact.
The fact he stood up in big games under pressure is also very appealing.

What's SPS' endurance like? I recall reading their were some queries on it.
I know he said he wants to move to Melbourne, but he hasn't actually lived here before so how will he adjust to the big city life? Will he be able to handle the intense media scrutiny we have here?

It's also been said he didn't have a great year this year...did he struggle with the extra attention and pressure?
When stacked up against the fact Taranto seemed to thrive in the big games, the importance of this is quite significant imo.

What is it about SPS that make you think he is less likely to cope than someone like Cripps who also moved from WA?

Would 100% chose the kid with work ethic and dedication over the slightly more talented player every time.

Are you suggesting that is Taranto v SPS this year? ... Or just alluding to the situation generally? ... Because I've not come across anything to suggest that SPS is anything but dedicated to his footy, with the work ethic to match someone trying to make it in the AFL ...

GWS midfield is so strong and deep, McLuggage might be playing forward pocket for his first 4 seasons ... who does GWS want in forward pocket, McLuggage or Ainsworth?
They have others who can play deeper, and they're about to secure some more kids, a couple of whom who could play forward pocket. Then there's the bottom of the draft.

You don't think that way when there's a significant talent gap, as there is with McCluggage and Ainsworth. McCluggage is clearly the better player, and GWS can shift things around to accommodate.
