But the nurturing is more or less what we did with Betts and he became an absolute star. SPS starting way further ahead.
Player intergration and managment is a big part of footy today life is complex and these guys are a little pamperd but it's about a team of human beings not robots.
Andy Walker will be a huge asset, his new post will nurture and be proactive at least we're now in a modern attitude long overdue surprised i took the club so long.

I want a player who can stand on his own 2 feet. If he has to have his hand held, be spoon fed and have his arse wiped then he doesn't belong in the hurly-burly of AFL football. Honest to god, we pay these people hundreds of thousands of dollars to kick and handball a bit of pig skin around and they demand to be nurse-maided as well. Any chance we might recruit someone, anyone, who might just happen to grow up to be a man and become a responsible adult??? Any chance at all??? It's a football club ffs, not a kindergarten.

Agree with you in general don't get me wrong, I was stating a feel of the way things are overall.
Notwithstanding the CFC has to develop a more sophisticated and sensitive approach to player welfare and integration if it wants to achieve the most from its assets and be an attractive destination for fresh and exciting talent, we need to build a cohesive and exciting team culture to be complimentary to our long and prestigious AFL history.

Are you suggesting that is Taranto v SPS this year? ... Or just alluding to the situation generally? ... Because I've not come across anything to suggest that SPS is anything but dedicated to his footy, with the work ethic to match someone trying to make it in the AFL ...

Just a general statement. I know very little about either of those players.

But just in general I would take the slightly less talented but more dedicated player.

I hear ya SG

Now hypothetically speaking, if Gary Ablett Senior entered the draft as an 18 year old this year, would you overlook him because of his off field issues?

Not all non-Weiterings are spuds.

Seems silly to spend so much time and effort to recruit players you need to complete the list only to have them walk out on the club for lack of a support structure. Interstate kids rarely have family support to fall back on when times get tough and for most it is their first foray into the wide world.

For the sake of a few dollars, we are providing them with a sounding board and resource centre to give them guidance and help they may be unable to ask for or get from team mates and coaches.

Not every problem on the field stems from football issues. Seems strange to deny assistance

I partially agree with you, for instance, I think Xavier Richards' reasons for leaving Sydney is pretty much a cot throwing sooky la la reason (cost of living too much in NSW, give me a break)

Clubs though are probably a lot more wary now of players with baggage/issues (ie Hawthorn and Dayle Garlett), and it's a shame that some of the most gifted and talented young players that have come through the draft system, have issues.

Read somewhere last year that some clubs are now actively encouraging their young players to get settle down/ married young and have kids, so they stay out of off field trouble. It sounds nice in theory, but being a family man won't stop men behaving badly.

Regardless there was some controversy about Charlie C before last year's draft, but we really lucked out when he slid to us, top 3 talent in his draft class for sure, so I don't think we should totally write off players with some issues, we have to make allowances that young men of a certain age are going to make mistakes ...

Jabba73, DirkDiggler, DaVillaBlues & bmaurizio thanks for entering the discussion and taking the time to reply. :thumbsu: Wasn't expecting a reaction to that post tbh. I guess I'm over watching the excess mollycoddling of players. It doesn't lead to the retention of players. Fev, Gibbs & Yarran are all varying examples of this for different reasons. Nick Graham is not Weitering, but he's always presented as a professional who doesn't require his hand to be held all day everyday. I'm not saying the club shouldn't have a HR Support/Welfare mechanism in place for players to access, but they're babied enough as it is. If they're not encouraged to become independent and grow up to become adults who are responsible for their own actions then they never will. I'd hate to see our players end up like Daniel Chic, because we failed to encourage them to become independent, responsible, free-thinking adults.

Draft and trade in as many mentally tough and self-motivated players as you can, but have the support mechanisms there for when they are (inevitably) needed.

A relationship or family problem can affect even the toughest players. They might be elite athletes, but they are human after all. Not every 18yo kid conquers moving out of home on day 1.

I get the feeling we wont be recruiting (m)any lazy players. And that Bolts will challenge them.

He asks lots of questions and empowers the players. That's a good environment for them to take responsibility for their game and career. They won't be simply showing up to the club and be told what to do. The Journey even showed him challenging the players in their home lives, to show thanks and help when visiting their parents.

Not every player is going to be an emotional success, but I think with considered selection AND providing the right level of support, we should have more successes than failures...

The easy thing to do is wash our hands of a tough situation by not recruiting "flight risks" (unsure about that term, makes them sound like they are applying for bail). If we're using go-home factor as a filter then we are limiting ourselves as a club and a desirable place to work. We have toiled hard on our multi-cultural and gender issues - still are I hope. It strikes me that part of the evolution of our club as an integral part of society is that we seek change and support those who struggle away from the places they recognize and feel attached to. We have the opportunity to become a positive influence in this important, on-going work. We won't always get it right but 'too hard' doesn't strike me as much of a mission statement.

Drive and resilience over natural ability every day of the week. Different strokes, just make sure we have people who can help their journey.

We have one great inside mid. That's it.

We finished dead last in centre clearances in 2016 for a reason...and that reason is not that we have good/great inside mids.

I seem to remember and correct me if i am wrong, but werent we ranked pretty high in clearances last year? Or was it 2014? Either way its the departure of robinson bell and carazzo that has had the effect ( judd was injured my st of the time) neither of those three were elite talents just hard nuts, and cripps was just awakening.

Great get - Carrazzo was as a big a loss as Judd was.

Carrazzo specifically ... yes.

The thing about getting another inside mid who has great prospects of making the grade is that Gibbs and Murphy can return to being inside/outside mids, the first receivers instead of the ball getters. It makes sense because they are better when they have time to sum things up.

I'm not sure which way is the best way but I do know Jason Burt at Hawthorn was put in a role there to guide all their young players through the first years of their AFL football life. His guidance was on everything from football and general life challenges faced by young footballers. Got to think it has been a success given the Hawks overall success and his promotion to General Manager of the football department.

Most of the players are dedicated in reaching the AFL but it is probably a different challenge once in the system as you are no longer bigger/stronger than all your competitors like in junior footy. You just can't dominate in the first two years hence some players unravel. From that perspective, having some guidance to explain to the players to bide their time, be professional, find a backup trade/professional really helps.

But just in general I would take the slightly less talented but more dedicated player.
The thing is, I don't think we are talking about a "slightly" more talented player, there is a big difference in talent. Ultimately, if Bowes isn't bid on by Brisbane then we may not even get the chance to choose between the two.

Once again I am not referring about any 2 players in particular.
