If we want class, elite endurance, scoreboard impact, inside and outside game, then Taranto is it. He is also a big strong lad.

My concerns with SPS are: endurance, inconsistency, not a large mid, go home factor.

Highly talented but can we take a risk here?

I'm no draft expert but really like the look of Taranto based on what i've seen and read about him.

I'd be keen for someone to tell me what the major 'concerns' are with him? Is it kicking? Consistency?

Like hearing that he's a mid who is a good mark and hits the scoreboard...im picturing a Luke Parker type since that is who he said he bases his game on.
Also like that he has natural endurance...it's an important part of the game these days and i hate how we've picked players with endurance concerns in the past where pretty much none of them improved a whole lot...eg DVR, Boek.

His kicking can sometimes be off. Might miss the odd target but he's not a poor kick. I feel it could be improved.

Only other slight area of weakness is pace but he motors along nicely similar to a Pendlebury.

He isn't a flashy eye catching type so many on here overlook him.

Unless a player is actually slow slow, i don't think pace is that big a concern.

I think clubs are going away from the 'athlete' back to the 'natural footballers'....the Bulldogs midfield isn't particularly pacy, but they all have decent enough pace and it's their skills and footy IQ that makes ball movement too quick for the opposition, rather than leg pace.

As long as Taranto has that footy IQ and knows how to move in traffic like Caleb Daniel he'll be fine.

I like the fact he had a big finish to the season in the finals series...the trait of lifting in big games when the pressure is on is quite a big deal imo...seems to have a confidence about him.

I don't know what it is about this years group but I'm struggling to find any real class in this batch of draftees.
I'm concerned that experts might be calling it deep because of the standard. Hope I'm wrong as we need pick 5 to be AFL standard.

Or alternatively, this draft is the first to really reflect the modern game, ie the demand for midfielders has never been higher due to the way the game is niw being played. The riddance of the green vest has removed the veil over what the game has become, a game of many onballers and fewer dominant big bodied relatively immobile key position players. This a draft seems to be the younger generation responding to demand, the demands of our new game where everyone is expected to contribute to team defence, team offence, and the midfield.

Gee, I just watched a few highlights reels of Scrimshaw to remind me of his talent.

The kid's got some serious ability - a beautiful mover across the ground and in the air.

Why is he not more highly touted?

Don't just look at the averages. There's times where he goes missing. Some games he gets a lot of the ball and some games not so much.

That's not the main concern with him though, the main concern is the go home factor.

His "home" is +8 hours from Perth..... He seems committed to an afl career and has been away from home for the past 3 years according to an article on afl.com

still feel we need a bigger body in there to support Cripps like a lot on this board have been saying since draft talk started, besides why did we recruit Pickett if we are going after P-S in the draft ? seems like they play a similar game.

Very interesting. When I watched his highlights I was thinking he looks like Parker but without the intensity/aggression.

The one thing that we lack the most on our list, is genuine match winning CLASS... We have good/great inside mids, defence looks to be set, fingers crossed our forward line looks to be starting to take shape.

But the one thing that we do not have is someone that just oozes class and someone who can get it done when the game is on the line, someone to kick the matching winning/sealing goal.

That player ladies and gents is Tim Taranto.

I know people like the thought of a Cripps/Brodie combo, but I do think that we can find Cripps' Robin next year either via draft or a Batman to Cripps' Robin via Free Agency or trade , but Taranto is/could be Superman.

We finished dead last in centre clearances in 2016 for a reason...and that reason is not that we have good/great inside mids.

We rated 8th at stoppages, which is more where an inside mid is required.

At centre bounces, there are more factors to consider. Ruckmen taps to advantage, lack of reaction time/speed to stop the clearance. Speed is just as important as a pure inside player. Just take a look at Jack Steven/Saints don't see any inside bulls there. It is also why they were last for clearances at stoppages.

Inside bull is not our first need, it is an inside/outside player similar to Jack Steven

Why would 2015 be more relevant than what we saw in 2016?

We had all of Carrazzo, Bell and Judd on board in 2015 - are they coming back in 2017?

I'm still not sold on taking Taranto at pick 5. He did have some big games towards the end of the year, but he has played in some very strong football teams.
Played half forward/mid mostly for Vic Metro, Sandy Dragons and the Judd team in the All star game.
He is a good prospect and if we were picking in the 8-10 range, I'd be all for him.
But I just think that pick 5 is a tad to high and prefer the other prospects that may be available.
