We can not afford to stuff this one up. Although all draft picks are high risk, the "Go home" factor & soft tissue injuries that SPS has had to date really worries me.

"Safe" bet is TT or WB for mine although Scrimshaw is exactly what we need but a reach at 5.
Please, Please PLEASE let it be TT!!! Doesn't lack confidence and with his strong overhead marking I have a gut feeling he is going to be a long-term champion in the mould of Jimmy Bartel for whoever selects him.

Agree that most of the

Yes agree the injury niggles that SPS has sufferd this year are of some concern, but the lad has sparkled whenever on a footy ground.
Skill, foty IQ, good speed and agility are crucial and important traits.
In recent years young players have recovered from badly broken legs and gone on eg the dogs Stringer so I'm not too concerned re SPS minor injuries , the lad is a jet, sublimly skilled footballers are a rare thing.

Soft tissue hamstring injuries are arguably worse than a broken leg like Stringer, in the sense that it is an often re-occurring injury that some players seem to find very hard to prevent.

SPS supporters really mainly focus on his obvious talent, which is warranted.

However, i think more emphasis needs to be given to the fact Taranto lifted and put in big performances towards the end of the year during the finals.
This shows he is able to deal with the pressure of big games...this kind of ability is unteachable and a player either has it or they don't.

I see Taranto as having our very own Luke Parker/Tom Mitchell type which is very exciting.

On the other hand, it concerns me that SPS apparently didn't have a very good year...isn't a big accumulator and didn't 'dominate' any games. He's still being talked about as a top 10 prospect due to his undeniable talent and class with ball in hand, but does he have enough of the other ingredients that make an A grade player? It suggests to me he struggled with injury and possibly the pressure of expectation and being his draft year...

Not sure if SPS fits this mould but I'm not a fan of players that posses a lot of natural talent but only play in 'bursts'. They may turn games, but they can also 'go missing' when required from time to time. It's OK to recruit these types if you are in a Premiership window because, when on song, they could win you a flag. However, while we are still up and coming I think we need to recruit strong-willed and dependable types, of which Taranto certainly seems to be.

We've made too many recruiting mistakes in the past and it's taken us years (even with the bulk turn-overs Bolts is making) to build some depth and finally get some talent into the team. I think Taranto is an absolute non-negotiable if available at No#5. Seriously hoping GC don't nab him before us.

I like the plays well in big games argument.

Did not happen once, but twice this year.

It is a thing, some players have it.

Apart from the strong overhead marking and ability to play midfield the ability to get the ball 45m out with your back to the goals and quickly turn around off just two steps and put through a goal in a high pressure game speaks volumes. Also the ability to take a big contested mark in another high pressure game with less than a goal lead with less than a minute to go.

If we can get Taranto at 5 I would be super excited.

Not a fan of SPS, his one on one ability in open space to win the ball is elite (Rioli like), but I saw far too many panic possessions in the vision I have seen.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-11-...ts-face-special-medical-assessment-from-clubs

Doesn't seem to worry any of the clubs. About 15 draft prospects have been askeded to undergo extra medical checks tomorrow to provide clubs an update on players who have missed substantial periods of the year through injury or ruled them out of the combine, including Will Brodie, Jy Simpkin, Alex Witherden, Daniel Venables, Brad Scheer, Hamish Brayshaw, Josh Daicos, Luke Ryan.

SPS is not one of those players being asked to undertake extra medical checks.

We all want the best for the club and its great to see and read such fervor.
I very confident that Silvagni and Boltotn will do their almost to acquire the very best talent available in their professional discretion and due diligence , that fine by me.
They are the experts and we'll abide by their choices and embrace as our own the new lads.
On a personal note I think SPS is the most talented player in this draft by far but that's just my opinion. Hope he'll be wearing the Navey Blue.

IN TODAY'S HERALD-SUN IN ASSESSING WHO SHOULD GO AT 1ST PICK OVERALL:[ahead of Mcluggage/McGrath]
'
The Pies’ other father-son, Callum Brown, anointed Sam Petrevski-Seton the pick of the bunch.

“I really like how clean he is at ground level, he’s an awesome decision-maker and he can win his own ball,” Brown said.

LOOKS LIKE IT'LL BE SPS AT THE MIGHTY BLUES

For me, FWIW, I'd be happy with meat and potatoes workhorse Brodie. I know it's not a good comparison player wise but he reminds me of Shane Tuck when I watch him. Just goes to the coal face gets the ball and generally uses it well. SPS to me is Rioli, who impacts games yes, but isn't an engine room guy. Taranto just smacks of Menzel in my eyes. And in the second round I'd take Drew, another boring type, but one that just gets the job done. We need to build the cake and add the strawberries and cream later.

Taranto is nothing like Menzel, so different it's not funny.

Menzel was sublime with his skills and lazy.
Taranto is reliable and an absolute workhorse.

Us ill-informed posters on BF will play tennis over most prospects up till the draft. I call him blue, you call him red. I'd rather Brodie, you like Taranto. Will say though, I'd take Taranto over SPS. Too many factors/traits that worry me. Taranto was pretty good in the Team Judd game I'll admit.

HARKER Is it worth doing V3 of this poll?

This one was taken about 2 weeks ago and we are about 2 weeks out from the draft. Would be interesting to see how much people's opinions have changed. This poll has Brodie the clear choice, but I dare say he will have dropped away significantly.

I got lambasted for putting up a V2 :) .............O.K. not quite lambasted but questioned.

I know we can change votes but we just won't.
O.K. I'll get V3 up, but maybe on the weekend.

By then we all would have well and truly settled on who we may realistically get, or who we may realistically want.

It's been mentioned before but SPS seems to be more of an "icing on the cake" player. Would be fantastic when the team is thriving at the top end of the ladder but his value is greatly diminished when we are around 14-18th on the ladder. It's probably wise to get players who are ball magnets and highly skilled rather then silky exciting players. In other words lets build a strong foundation before we put the finishing touches on.

It's been mentioned I suggest by people who have not watched any videos of SPS. He fights hard for the ball 1 on 1, tackles, and a lot of other things. Happens to also be fast and has good disposal on both sides. If Gold Coast don't take him first, I anticipate SOS won't take long to take SPS.

I watched the Vic Metro vs WA game last night and was so underwhelmed with SPS. The way some of you guys rave about him is extraordinary! I was expecting to see an inside/outside jet. Unfortunately I did not see that. He went large chunks of the game without any impact whatsoever. He had some nice disposals in the third quarter but if I went into watching this game without the hype I would not have noticed him at all. Not the kind of play we need. The risk is simply unacceptable. He is a flashy outside mid who won't have an impact on AFL games for years. What is wrong with taking the safe bet -'Setterfield, Taranto or Brodie.

Is this part of a ploy to get █████ elected? FBI have gone to town on Brodie.

Of course his highlight videos show him winning the ball. But he doesn't do it near as much as Taranto or Brodie

I find these polls rather pointless, the data is almost universally skewed towards whatever is in the media at the time.. Brodie the hot favourite early, then word about SPS now has him getting a bunch of votes. Maybe 10% of votes are coming from anyone with more than a slight clue...

Who do you rate as the best selection for pick 5?

I'm not sure there is an ideal choice to be honest. I want pace, foot skills and ability to play inside and outside mid. Possibly Setterfield if GWS lose picks but durability is a problem.

At the end of the day players are rated for a reason. Brodie, SPS, Taranto, Setterfield ... all have their faults. I'm going to put trust in our recruiters to know who is best for where we are in our rebuild. We want someone to compliment our rebuild, not stagnate and get frustrated because they should have been added later.
