Re: 2007 draft - midfielders

I think the way footy is heading, players can no longer be considered purely and inside player or purely an outside player.

You are always going to have players who have differing strengths and it's important to find the right mix.

But in the current game, inside mids need to be able to find space. McVeigh, Winderlich are very good at finding space. The reason JJ's career is going backwards is because he can no longer do that, he can still bang and crash and win the footy but he doesn't have the ability to find space.

Those that are great at finding space (outside) need to have the ability to win their own ball when the time comes. This is why Dempsey was so impressive on Sunday, it's why Stanton is such a good footballer.

I reckon Jetta showed a lot more than Houli and he doesn't have off field problems. He went out one night before a game, he didn't drink. He's an 18 year old kid living away from home and that's his only slip up.

I think you've pretty much said what I was trying to in a better way so cheers.

As for Jetta i'd heard a rumour that he had some attitude issues not relevant to the night your talking about. Young guys going out (drinking or not) is far from an issue IMO so that had no bearing on what I was saying. Just heard he was somewhat egotistical and not working to hard on the training track. Could have something to do with injuries he's incurred this year but it's what I got from the grapevine.

Re: 2007 draft - midfielders

Great stuff Ant - Lets hope Adrian Dud I mean Dodoro reads your preview and gets some solid midfielders early - rather than another KPP in the mistaken belief they are the best available!

That's the problem with rumours...

He's had a form of OP that he's carried through the season and has limited his impact at training and in the VFL.

Leroy has a way to go, but I've got no doubts he'll be a seriously good footballer for our club.

I think he almost treats the VFL with discontent. He's too good for it and I think that comes through with the way he plays. Once he's fit we'll see a different player at senior level.

I think there's a difference between being egotistical and having a confidence in your own ability. I think Leroy has the latter.

i think you are right on this one longy but He has to stay clear from off-field trouble, having he's mentor in cole gone by seasons end may halp this.

he just has to work hard to gain his fitness base although if you work to hard when u have OP then thats a differet story. Mcelod only became that super player once he was able to run out full games. Hird was told by pagan he wasn't fit enough how that changed. C'mon leroy stand up we need you.

Jackson Hall -187cm,76kg-Gippsland Power/Traralgon. Tall quick winger who runs hard. His kicking isn’t always good as far as decision making goes but has been consistently good in the TAC Cup. One of Vic Country’s better players in the Champs. Will be seen as a player with a big upside as he has an A grade running game.
Pick 20 to 50

Ashley Arrowsmith – 188cm 82kg-Calder Cannons. Tall running wingman that has had a good year in the TAC Cup but was burnt at the stake during the champs. He was exposed for pace by the rampaging WA midfield. He is a very outside player who likes to find space and link in. His kicking is reliable rather than great. On his TAC form someone will pick him up.
Pick 25 to 60.

Andy Otten-192cm, 86kg-Oakleigh Chargers. Having a very good year in the TAC Cup where he has been used forward or back or on the wing. He is a real athlete with good skills. Has been averaging 27 possession a game for Oakleigh.
Pick 25 to 60.

Ryan Normington – 186cm,76kg-Murray Bushrangers. Didn’t have a great run at the Champs for Vic Country but the whole side didn’t go well either. His TAC Cup form has been pretty good. Plays in the middle and has good skills and works well as the link man. Not really a contested ball winner from what I have seen. Decision making is good.
Pick 30 to 60.

Hugh Sandilands-191cm, 82kg-Oakleigh Chargers. Tallish midfielder who plays a bit outside. Can find the footy well. Skills are ok but he doesn’t always use them well. Can have games where he just throws the footy onto the boot. Pace is reasonable but not quick.
Pick 30 plus.

Just like to hear your thoughts on these guys ant555/foj1?

Who would you rather take?

Not all that keen on Arrowsmith. Doesnt have enough pace and his kicking skills are not getting any better.

Jackson Hall seems to have plenty of upside. Needs to think more about where he kicks the footy but does have pace and height.

Otten has had a very good year. Pretty sure he will go second or third round.Pace is ok. Running ability seemd to be good and his skills are good.

Normington goes ok. Skills are good enough.

Sandilands , well im not totally sold on him. His isnt overly quick and rush's his disposal at times. He has got good skills if he uses them properly.

I would take Otten and Hall first out of this group.

Re: 2007 draft - midfielders

ant Any chances of any bendigo bombers players getting picked up or rookied?

Maybe Jarrod Atkinson for a rookie spot.

Cheers for that. The all seem a similar type, the tall mobile 189cm mark that can play as a wing/forward or back.

Re: 2007 draft - midfielders

not even flaherty or how ever ya spell it fair season?

Not convinced Flaherty has the pace or skills for AFL level. Have to say he has been a real find for Bendigo and will be a good VFL player for a few years to come.

Re: 2007 draft - midfielders

I thought he was younger than that.

Thought he was only 19 or so.

Birth date 5/11/86 according to the VFL record.

I saw Trent Cotchin play and thought he was very good even though he was heavily tagged.
Going to be a very good player if he can shake a few tags to give him the confidence he needs to find his feet at AFL Level.

I went to school with Ashely Arrowsmith about 3 years ago and had no idea he was a contender in this coming draft- is he really that good?

His kicking is terrible. I would be rather annoyed if we picked him as we dont need any more blokes who cant hit targets. The kid can play too bad about his kicking.

ant I'm not to sure how many times you have seen him play but I can assure you that his kicking isn't terrible.

Lets see how many times have i seen him play. Nine this season. His kicking as far as hitting targets go is ordinary. He had 3 turnovers by foot last week against Rangers in the first 3/4 i saw. Against the Bushrangers he had 6 turnovers. The second last game against Geelong Falcons he had 5. Thats just in the last 3 games i saw him play. 14 turnovers by foot is not great. He is very suspect under pressure. There is no doubting he can kick it a long way but in todays football you just have to be able to hit targets. He simply has too many turnovers.
