Not every player goes home and we don't need Butcher.

H/F: Bate Watts Sylvia
F: Wonnaeamirri Jurrah Maric

What we do need is people who can kick the ball to those in the forward line, hence Scully and Trengrove.

I prefer a KPP FF to kick 100+ goals per season. This is the main weapon to win premiership. Butcher is the man :)

Yes, not every player goes home, but still a risk of another version of Scott Thompson. Plus, having Grimes, Blease, Strauss, McLean, Sylvia, Scully, Petterd, Jones, Moloney, Morton, Buckley, Bennell, Bruce etc, I don't think Trengrove is required.

KPP is what we need and Butcher is the only one best in this year's coming draft. Perhaps other picks from 2nd rounder can be used for another quality midfielder :D

Black: Questions over their kicking.

Blue: Better off forward.

Red: Small defender.

If Butcher can slip down to 2nd rounder, I'm happy with Trengrove. However, I don't see this will happen simply because he is the only best KPP in the draft. Since there are lots of other midfielders in this coming draft, I prefer Butcher and then another best quality midfielder at 2nd rounder.

If we get as much draft picks like GC, definately take 3 of them at Pick 1, 2 and 3. :D

Green-I don't even know how to reply to the idiocy of that post, if Blease was in this year it's rumoured he'd be top 3, so for a guy that looks like a young Fev to slip through THIS let alone any draft is silly

Orange-ummmm...what?

As mentioned Butcher won't slip to 2nd rounder and will never happen. Simply because he is the best KPP and TOP 5 in this year's draft. This is the reason why I am trying to explain to Mr Dez - You won't get a quality KPP at 2nd rounder comparing to Butcher. On other side of the coin, there is a possibility of getting the best quality midfielder at 2nd rounder similar to Trengrove.

Orange highlighted means if MFC is a new established AFL club like GC and WS.

Well either way who even we pick we will need to do something about the fact we are currently 15th for points scored, only 5 points better off than NM , who will probably take that off us this week. So KLTK is quite right saying you usually pick up a decent mid second round, yet a big forward is usually hard to come by after the 1st round. Exception of coarse is KT of Adelaide.

He was a steal. And we got Garland the round after!

I went to the U18's Championships this year. I didn't take a paper, or get the record. I wanted to rate players on their day(at Docklands), not their name or reputation. I did the review for myself and some mates, and fellow Melbourne supporter friends of mine.

I didn't have a record today so I wrote down numbers of kids that looked good. Just the ones that stood out to me.

VIC COUNTRY:

1.Kallan Geary-Good skills-That's all I had down.
3.Allen Christensen-Flashy player that finds the ball alot for a kid that didn't look too quick. Tough body around stopages. I liked Him.
7. Andrew Hooper-Didn't have much affect on the game but showed leadership and when a fight broke out at half time the team listened to him when he pulled them away.
23.Gary Rohan-Probably the cockiest kid of the whole day. Talented player who read the play and good skills to back himself up. He played as quarter-back and HFF. Impressive. Top 10.
26.John Butcher-Limited supply but looked far too talented when it got in there. Plays FF and CHF and is hard to spoil. Kicked two goals
29.Dustin Martin-Look out for this kid. Massive first half and makes the play. He was everywhere and kicked one I think. Smart footballer already. Definately make it to AFL. Top 20.

W.A:

1. Travis Colyer- This team was more team orientated and less about themselves. He was the catalyst giving off the ball to farwards with precision all game. Good leader. Very skillful
4. Brandon matera- Was on the phone to Dan when he kicked his second of the third quarter to put WA 5 goals up. He was more like Phillip with his forward crumbing but looks more like NDS the way he moves. Will be good if he gets room. Top 20.
9. David Swallow- He was their best player for mine. Most skillful and exciting one they had. Might get alot of loose ball but plays like a senior player already. Good decision making which wasn't the common for the day.
11. Bradley Shepherd- Didn't notice anything too exciting apart from the fact that he was very composed and it stood out because alot of players were hurried on the big stage.
16. Mark Hutchings- Skillful player. Nothing unbelievable yet.
20. Winmar- This kid has natural talent. Good runner, hard worker.
23. Mitchell Duncan- Tough and skillful. Coaches will like him. Pretty confident too.
26. Dean Beswick- Grunt player. Was tough and worked hard but was on and off. Looked good from limited time.
39. Chris Luff- He had The Butch. Minded him alright but was better coming out of the backline. He'll be the years Hurley. Looked like he knows how to play back.

VIC METRO:worst team of the day

5. Daniel Talia- He made a couple skill errors early and copped it from the crowd but settled soon after and played some good footy. Looks like James Hird with the blonde locks. Rebound player from half back. Was very involved but teammats weren't doing much. Top 20.
12. Sam Ezard- Fanta Pants, must be related to Alan. Pretty good. Composed too. Kicked a goal or two. Missed a couple aswell. Flanker in the mould of Stevie J.
21. Jayden Hogel- A sure talent. This kid will be a freak and will play AFL. Awesome skills and knows it. Faded away as the game went on but showed plenty. Top 30?

25/32. Tom Scully- He started wearing his usual 32 jumper but copped one in the nose I think. he bled on the jumped so came back on with the new number 25. Mark him down as the number one pick. Never been more certain. All the hype around this kid is deserved. He got his first touch straight out of the ruck and dominated from there on in. 27 touches I heard and was by no means greedy. He kicked the goal of the day, which was more of a play of the day because he moved like Yanno on a drunk girl. Quick and effective. I like him alot.

30. Jake Carlisle-Best forward of the day. Real second efforts and was rewarded with maybe 3-4 goals. He'll be a high pick for whoever wants big forwards. He was mobile. I met his parents and sister. His sister was nice. Blonde, top body, yummy. Top 30, maybe 20.
34. Josh Toy- He got a bit coming out of the backline. He bombs away and sometimes kicks long to opposition who were alone. Doesn't make the best decisions but if coached properly his attack will be more rewarded. He is a really big kick too and showed that off which probably made him turn it over. good defenseive game, I like these players. Top 10.

S.A

1. Byron Sumner. Not related to Gordon. He will be the MacLeod of the 21st century. Better than Bennell. Whoever gets him will be very lucky. He ran all day and was second or third most effective after Scully or Wanganeen. The penultimate Quarter-back who has footy smarts. Composed and direct. Maybe Top 10 pick.
2. Derick Wanganeen. The ball seemed to come to him even more than he earned it. Bit of a magnet and quick off the mark. A dangerous combo. He was flashy like the Davey's. Good kicking skills. Always kicked. Played the opposite side to Sumner but pretty similar. Not too shabby.Top 20.
37. James Craig- He was the standout ruck of the day. Like big Monkey for the Pies he would slam it forward. Good game and attacking player. If any weakness he could only play ruck I'd say. Not too quick.Top 10.

Thanks boys, hope this gives you all something to look forward to. I hate Etihad Stadium but this was alright to watch once I got my seat. I liked the talent around too. Players girlfriends and sisters will keep me going back next year. Until then...

I would take Beats write-up with a grain of salt. There are some terrible calls he has made.

Trengove wouldn't have gone top 10 last year? He is a better SA junior than Hartlett and he went at 4. Over here he is playing SANFL and not just chipping in - he is a strong contributor for Sturt and actually had a dominant game where he was probably BOG.

Butcher = Fevola?
Morabito = Rodan?
wtf?

Scully and Trengrove.

Agreed these two guys are easily the best, most skilled and well performed of any players in this years u18 carnival. They are ready made and would step straight into Melbournes round 1 side.

Aria, he did try and overall made some good points but i agree with the two calls you made above. With only limited highlights of Morabito i would liken him to Andrew Embley and Butcher more to koschitzke.

Unsure how you compare players who are around 15 cm in height difference. Fev more of a lead up, hit the ball at pace forward as opposed to Butcher who can hit the ball on a lead would be more damaging with his height and floating accross the pack, like Kosi.

I think our 2nd selection will come down to Trengove & Butcher. Like many I felt that it was going to be Butcher but after a disappointing carnival I'm not so sure. Trengove on the other hand had an outstanding carnival and by all reports has continued his development playing good solid football in the Sturt seniors.

Melbourne need to get this decision right and there are a number of factors to consider:
I'm sure the MFC would love to have Butcher in the forward line next to Watts for the next 10 or so years playing in much the same way as Franklin and Roughead.
On the other hand two elite midfielders in Scully & Trengove would be mouth watering, considering the comparisions that i've seen recently having them likened to Cousins & Ricccuito, it is hard to know which is more important.

There is talk that Butcher has a huge ego and is his own biggest fan. Whilst many would consider Franklin in the same mould another young Hawk considered to love himself is Thorp and so far it is safe to say he has not lived up to the hype.

An issue that MFC supporters have with Trengove is that being from SA he could head back home to Adelaide just like Thompson did.

For me, it may well come down to the interviews at the draft camp. The one who presents as a dedicated team player and has a willingness to lead the MFC back up the ladder should get the nod.

At the minute I am favouring Trengove but only slightly. I just hope that Barry Prendergast gets it right.
