Responses to my original post show I'm in the minority but I still don't think trading 3 and 6 for 1 is that bad of a play for GC.

Land the top 2 prospects in the country; including Walsh who has publically stated he'd be happy to go anywhere including the Suns. If I was the Suns and I took the three SA boys (Luk, Rankine, Rozee at 2, 3 and 6) I'd be very nervous once their initial 2 year contracts run out. Especially if the Suns as expected continue to struggle in the next year or two.

Walsh reminds me of Andrew Brayshaw pre his drafting. Very solid citizen who due to his character is more likely to hang around long term. Pretty sure it was reported that Brayshaw told interstate clubs that he would stick around if they selected him. It's why he jumped right up into Freo's pick 2 calculations on draft night. He then went on to sign a two year contract extension at Freo after being there for 3 weeks. If I was the Suns I'd do the same with Walsh.

A more realistic trade would see Carlton trade pick 1 and a future 1st for picks 2, 3 and a future 2nd.

Gold Coast can then pick Walsh at 1 and Caldwell at 6 and have 3 early 1st rounders next year with their own and Brisbane and Carlton's as well.

Blues pick Lukoscius and Rankine this year which is an easy sell to members.

No it isn't.

The difference between pick 1 and 2 is marginal for GC, especially if the Blues are unsure of who to take.

That leaves pick 3 for an undecided pick. Given GC gambled and it ended badly once before, trading for WC future first round, they would be pretty wary.

Here's mine....Buku Khamis is clearly a Top 20 pick....But the Dogs have instructed him to 'gip it' since his stellar under 18's carnival, so as to score him on the sly for a late pick.

Nothing wrong with that , as you will not be judge by GC top Management if you make the wrong move after Clayton departure.

Really, there is a fair argument for all of Walsh, Lukosius or Rankine to go number one, so I'm not sure why GC would give up pick 6 when they are going to get two of them anyway.

And then there is still some absolute quality there at 6.

Best defender in this draft so far as I'm concerned....Unless he's been carrying an injury I'm unaware of.

Agreed. I think someone said that Hill was doing a similar thing to and up at Freo.

I doubt it would actually be true, but if it were it says a lot about a guys character IMO.

Although I do agree Buku is a good player and a good aerial rebounding defender I highly doubt he was told to stop playing so well, he was touted as a top 30 talent at the start of this season “known from being at a jets training session and talking to coaches” everyone has flaws, maybe some have been found or maybe others have developed more in 2018 than him.

My rumor is Geelong being interested in several Jets midfielders after contacting a Jets coach to talk about it, in saying that though.
A lot of questions were asked about players not available to be drafted this year.

They should. I think Walsh is the safe bet, vanilla that they can build their team off. Rankine will win games off his own boot, make everyone around him look better and will be a more damaging player in my opinion.

Five years from now I don't think Sam Walsh is the best player from his draft class. I think Rankine is in the conversation but he is also riskier and that stigma of a #1 pick going poorly in a rebuild could cost people their jobs.

Is there much point in the blues having a guy like Rankine playing at half forward.
Bloke wont see the pill for a few years.

Cripps needs help in that midfield... its far too shallow at the moment.

Suns take Walsh (safe bet for them - which they need) and Lukosious and then Blues take Rankine at 3 and maybe Rozee at 6.

If I'm Gold Coast im taking as many top 20 picks in as I can get.
They don't need 1 gun player, they need as many as they can get.

Rightly so. Rankine is the highest risk, highest reward pick though. Personally I expect Carlton to take the sure thing in Walsh, but if they took Rankine you'd understand why.

I agree regarding Lukosius, as I rate him the best player in the draft, I also rate Smith and Caldwell better long term prospects over Walsh

As for finishing bottom 2 next year, think that is a tad premature

Rankine is the better player long-term and Cripps needs a mature body, they should draft Rankine and rookie list Barlow. Problem solved.

The AFL probably wouldn't allow it because it's a rip off for Gold Coast, like I said earlier the draft points for pick 1 are pick 3 and 22. There's not much between the top 3 so you're justing giving up pick 6 for nothing.Carlton are picking for needs it looks like, other clubs could easily take Loukakius or Rankine at one.

I like Butters too. I think we would be very keen on him with 16, possibly 13 depending on who was already off the table. I wonder if Geelong would trade 12 for 16 and a swap of a future picks (and a wink that we wont take Butters). Something similar that the two clubs both did in 2014, which was 10 and 47 for 14 and 37

Makes sense if the Crows are the only other club in that top 16 that rates him as highly as Geelong. I can't see GWS taking him or Freo. Port might, but haven't heard them linked with him.
