Re: Is Cleve Hughes worth picking up late in the draft ?

i think he may be worth going on our rookie list if he is eligible, bit of upside to him IMO

he wasnt right all year because he was there when polak got hit by that tram last year and apparentley struggled to get to grips with it

fresh start at a fresh club might do him and us some good

Thats interesting, the bloke who got hit by the tram got back and played reasonable footy in the reserves and made it back to the seniors and the bloke who missed getting hit couldn't achieve that. Might have just got our answer.

Mind you Polak doesn't remember the incident as he was unconcious where as Hughes had to deal with the situation first hand.

Re: Is Cleve Hughes worth picking up late in the draft ?

No thanks already have too much deadwood, passengers, hacks on out list.

Yeah fair point, didn't realise that was the case. I will probably err on the side of caution with Hughes all the same, all will be revealed at 11.30am tomorrow.;)

Re: Is Cleve Hughes worth picking up late in the draft ?

The second half of last season he had me convinced he was a great young prospect. Good lead, good hands, very good kick.

I would want to know why the wheels fell off so quickly. For a young guy with the footy world at his feet (i.e. A young forward in a team screaming out for young forwards) why did he go backwards so quickly?

I wouldn't be opposed to the idea if our MC/recruiters decided that his head was in the right space, and that he just didn't get on with TW (easy to understand).

Just read this:

Maybe invite him down for training in November.:thumbsu:

Not sure his defensive work is much to write home about, but as Fev has shown in the last few years, that is something that can be fixed, and he is young enough to fix it.

A new club might be just the thing to spark him. No doubt he has some talent.

Depression apparently. But that's just a rumour. If he can get it together he could become a very good forward.

I just watched the highlights from the Port Adelaide game where he kicked 6 and he looked very good, it's quite a shame that this is what he is going through (if true).

He's a very straight kick but just doesn't get enough of the ball. With better delivery from the likes of Judd he could be a useful goalkicker.

My thoughts of Cleve Hughes are that Simon Beaumont kicked eight in a half once.

All the best to Cleve with his recovery if this is the case.

Do you know anything about how long he's had it for? how he's going with his recovery?

A lot of sports people have made very successful returns from depression.

Re: Is Cleve Hughes worth picking up late in the draft ?

why not? if there is a space available where we wouldnt have to give up a good young player? we tried greg bentley and pfeiffer and they have really hurt us by having them on the list? so why not? depth is always good!

Hmmm.......again, he'd probably be a better prospect than a fourth round pick given he has played senior footy and at times played well. Not too many fourth round picks would be able to say this, and I suspect this year even more so (given the repeated talk about a shallow pool this year).

If the club doctor and pyschologist though he was able to work through it, I'd be more than happy to provide him with a club to do it in as a late pick or mature age rookie.

Are you saying that if you could pick up a player for a late pick or rookie that would turn out like Beaumont that you wouldn't do it?

Strange.

No as a defender Beaumont was reasonable. Limited but reasonable.

What I am saying is that people tend to focus on the exception rather than the rule at draft time. Hughes is talked up for his six goal effort but one good game does not a player make.

Re: Is Cleve Hughes worth picking up late in the draft ?

In a word - yes.
Does have some ability, lovely kick of the footy, and has been in the system for a few years now. From what I have heard, he's a kid that has struggled with his confidence, and I reckon playing him out of the goalsquare next to Fevola might be the shot in the arm he needs.

Shallow draft, so we are going to have to find some players from somewhere.

Re: Is Cleve Hughes worth picking up late in the draft ?

I'd be pretty wary of picking up any product of the Richmond development program. Will be coming from a long way back

Re: Is Cleve Hughes worth picking up late in the draft ?

No thanks. Has languished all year in the Coburg Two's and failed to fire a shot in amongst that modest company. Add to that lack of ability his ongoing health battles and I think if he was drafted by the Blues it would be a futile exercise. :)
