geez i doubt that very much.with our history i really dont understand this attitude toward the draft.

even in shallow draft yrs in recent yrs, the majority of players are taken in the top 50.
in a shallow draft yr i think it more important than at any other time to have as many picks as possible if not all of your picks inside the top 50.

rather than trading away really good picks around 35 id be looking to add to them around that point.

clubs in recent yrs are spending huge amounts on recruiting do you really believe they will find just as many good players around 60 as 35.

in 04 one of the shallowest drafts in recent times imo. clubs hardly used a pick after 60.
your advocating we use pick 14 and whatever other draft picks we use at pick 54 onwards.

why do we place so little value on our draft picks its this that has plauged the club since the inception of the nd in 86.

we need to find 4 or 5 very good to reasonable footballers every yr just to tread water it wont happen with picks after 54.
Little point taking a heap of speculative picks late in a shallow draft as all that leads to is having kids on your list who in all probability will be delisted after their initial 2 year contracts.

IMO we're better off trading our second round pick for a player we need, in this case for Maric, then taking 1-2 picks after that along with our early pick. Then next year with a strong draft that will run as per normal except for the raft of compo picks that will be used we can then tap deeper into the draft and hope that we can land a few Swan types who were picked in the 50+ range.

Buntine really seems like a player we would draft, going by our picks in the last draft.

reads the play well, good decision maker and good skills, although his lack of pace may be a put off.

still im a fan, and i think with him and batchelor coming off the half back flanks we would be set for many years to come.

we might go for a pure mid, but i wouldnt be unhappy if we picked him up.

would push lids to a wing, with conca on the other, martin in the middle, and then cotchin would need that other inside gun to support him.

i would love buntine but i think he will go in the 6-12 range for sure. havnt seen much of docherty but greene impressed me, he plays like a young Sam Mitchell, great evasion, grunt and contested ball winning ability, would love him at the club and think players like foley would be a great mentor to him.

brad mckenzie and talia are others who are likely to be available here and would be pretty happy with them

brandon Ellis is my smoky for us at 14 or 37. plays like shannon hurn/josh hunt and is a big bodied defensive general with a beautiful kick and elite decision making.

Been Thinking about talia. is he worth our pick 14 if we decide to use it and not trade it away ?

The benefit of taking this kid could be his brother may want to join him in a couple of years .

Hey guys, anyone know anything about Steven Verrier being linked with us as a late draft selection? I know him from school and he told me we are 1 of 3 clubs interested in him. I know he has skills, but i don't watch him enough to understand what his strengths and weaknesses are.

I would hope we are targetting a pure mid. Someone that can win inside/outside ball and support Cotch in the clearances:

Greene or Kavanagh would be good. Kavanagh more upside but also a higher risk!!!

What about Crozier to add some x-factor up forward? Been likened to Dale Thomas so could push into the mid by the time we are ready to challenge for a flag

Doesn't surprise me that we would be looking at him, elite skills and good decision maker. A good size at 188cm, he likes to run and carry, pace is good, I think he really needs to work on finding more of the ball though.....

i really havent seen a lot this season so ill take your word, but i can see why he would go that high, one of those players who is very well rounded.

just watched the SA v WA game from the championships and reminded me how much of a fan i am of grigg, his kicking is top notch.

Would not touch him with a 10ft pole with our first pick... should go after pick 25. Really dropped off after taking that much publicised hanger. Project player at best... will take more time than most to develop. Steer clear tiges! Maybe we should go back to taking the safe option... McKenzie if he is there.

Crozier could be Thomas/Fyfe... but he could also be Jarred Oakleigh Nicholls

yeh grigg dominated that game, elite kicking skills. will most definatly gone by our pick i reckon unless the draft camp finds some flaws with his pace, endurance, attitude perhaps.

Read somewhere a few teams were interested with a 4th rounder. Would be happy with this. Is the type we need. Tall line-breaking skilled mid. Him and Morris with our 3rd & 4th pick. Do a player trade for Maric. Reckon Verrier could play a bit next year at 188cm/82kg. Looks to have a body that will fill out nicely.

Chris25 has him at 25 in his mock draft. Yes please. Would be the best case scenario for us. Will be a fave of many supporters i would think.

Saw Steven today. He has had another 4 clubs approach him taking the total number of clubs interested to 7. Richmond are dead keen to get him as a 4th rounder, but Adelaide and Brisbane are really keen on him as well. Saw a couple of matches of his today that eh showed me and he would be a likely type. My impressions were that he plays a lot like Lids. Has silky footskills and really keen decision making. The only downside I can think of is he really close to his family and he doesn't know how he would handle being away from them. Would be an upgrade on Edwards too if we manage to land him as a fourth rounder, it would be a good pickup for the club.

Fair enough, hadn't seen too much of him...if he was available at our 2nd pick I would love it but GWS would surely be happy to take the risk earlier than that

May need to hope Morris costs us a 4th rounder and we can take him in the 3rd round. Ive heard a few clubs interested with 4th rounders. If we really want him then take him in the 3rd. That's what happened with Batch and it looks like a great move.

Please not Crozier with our first pick, played junior footy with him and he's a good bloke, but he is way too inconsistent and flashy for us.

On the Draft and Trading board a Freo supporter has posted in the 'Patrick Dangerfield' thread....

{Don't shot the messenger, but I have heard from 2 different sources from the same Melbourne based club that Dangerfield has indicated he wants to return to Melbourne, and has nominated this club as his preferred destination}

Reckon it's us??

We need consistent kids, with decent skills and decision making and that is for certain. Crozier could turn out to be a gun, but as it was said before, he could turn out to be a spud, and he weighs about that of a feather and wouldnt be ready to make the step for a while.. Grigg, Butine are great but will they be there at 14? Talia is a 'competitve beast' but his foot skills are a worry, and out of the backline we need something a bit more! Kavanagh could be a jet, but chronic hamstring injuries @ 17? I like McKenzie from SA but again we need someone/ something that will work early into 2012 someone that is ready straight away.. Should/ Could we trade 14 for a recongnised and ready player?

Why the emphasis on them being ready to play right now, the rest of the team is still a couple of years away from being able to challenge realistically for a flag. I would rather take someone who will be the better player in 2-3 years time

Agree with this. But i think we will get someone who happens to be ready to play and also the best available.

Fair call, just worry about taking these 'risks' and getting absolutely nothing out of them.. Tambling, Polo, Fiora, Cleve Hughes etc etc.. the list goes on and and on and on.. we need quality
Chris Knights apparently was a chance for the tiges?

Why's he expected to go so late? Small? Skinny? Doesn't get much of the ball?
