23) Gavin Urquhart

Midfielder

181cms and 78kgs
18/5/88
Morningside (Qld)

Impressive for Qld at the U18s and was named All Australian there. Very hard and physical player who is at his best in contested situations. Seems to have a case of the ‘white line fevers’. Prone to losing the plot a little and can be niggled and lose concentration at times.
Will put his head over the ball and enjoys contested situations where he performs at his best. Still capable of running with the bell and linking up. Can turn the ball over in pressure situations a little too much but given time and space is a very good kick. Plenty of distance and penetration with his disposal.

Gets the ball, runs to dangerous positions and uses it. Hard and tough and can clear the ball from congestion. Effective rather than classy but can play all over the ground.
Not overly quick but has enough pace for it not to be a concern. Good strong tackler and a good inside midfield prospect. Has everything for that role and is not classy but hard and effective. Goodish skills and can play. Very good tank and runs all day.

Good size already at 181 and 80kgs and is physically developed. Used this to advantage in the U18 Championships last year. Not sure there is too much physical improvement in him left but do like what I have seen of him.

Interstingly he is listed as taller in a more recent article:

Record 13 Queenslanders invited to AFL Draft Camp

A record 13 Queenslanders have been invited to attend this year’s NAB AFL Draft Camp.

In a glowing tribute to the talent program in Queensland and confirmation that the Sunshine State is now a primary target for AFL talent scouts, this represents 18% of the total camp invitees of 72.

A further seven Queenslanders have been invited to undertake State screening, which is an adjunct to the camp at the AIS in Canberra from 3-6 October.

This comes after the 2006 Australia Post Scorpions, coached by former Brisbane Lions triple premiership ace Craig McRae, won the division two title undefeated at this year’s NAB Australian U18 Championships in Melbourne.

“It’s a phenomenal result and says we must be doing something right,” said AFL Queensland Talent Manager and former Sydney Swans champion Mark Browning. “It’s vindication of all the hard work done right through system not just this year but over recent years.

“From junior and senior clubs and development programs statewide, through to the Scorpions (U18s) and Young Scorpions (U16s), it’s a job well done,” he said.

Under the AFL system, each AFL club was asked to nominate 50 potential draftees. Any player who received five or more nominations was invited to the draft camp, where they will undergo an extensive testing program and be available for interview by each of the AFL clubs.

Anyone else nominated even once was invited to the State screening process, where they will be put through a similar testing program. The results will be added the data base from the camp and will be supplied to each club prior to the draft.

Heading the draft camp list are the 2006 Scorpions’ All-Australian trio of Ricky Petterd (Broadbeach), David Armitage (Morningside) and Daniel Dzufer (Zillmere), plus Brent Renouf (Southport), Gavin Urquhart (Morningside) and Albert Proud (Mt.Gravatt), who, like Petterd, Armitage and Dzufer were graduates of the AFL/AIS Academy program.

Dzufer, Haydn Kiel and Jesse White (Southport) will back up for a second year at the camp along with first-timers Kurt Tippett (Southport), Ben Warren (Zillmere), Chris Smith, Shaun Hampson and Gavin Grose (Mt.Gravatt).

The seven Queenslanders to undergo State screening will be Scott Clouston (Morningside), Simon Plummer (Mt.Gravatt), Brad Howard, Adam Mueller (Redland), Tauryan Zimmer (Southport), Rhys Magin (Noosa/Suncoast Lions) and Shaun Tapp (Western Magpies)

There is a good country flavor in the Queensland 20, with three players originally from regional areas – Armitage (Mackay), Urquhart (Rockhampton) and Howard (Toowoomba).

This is in addition to the Sunshine Coast trio of Dzufer, Smith and Magin, and seven Gold Coasters – Petterd, Renouf, Tippett, Kiel, Grose, White and Zimmer.

The 13 Queenslanders invited to the draft camp are:-

Name - Age - Ht (cm) - Wt (kg) - Club
David Armitage - 18 - 183 - 79 - Mackay/Morningside
Daniel Dzufer - 18 - 186 - 81 - Caloundra/Zillmere
Gavin Grose - 17 - 193 - 85 - Southport
Shaun Hampson - 18 - 201.5 - 93 - Mt.Gravatt
Haydn Kiel - 18 - 178 - 79 - Southport
Ricky Petterd - 18 - 184 - 77 - Broadbeach
Albert Proud - 17 - 179 - 80 - Mt.Gravatt
Brent Renouf - 18 - 199 - 92 - Southport
Chris Smith - 18 - 184 - 80 - Caloundra/Mt.Gravatt
Kurt Tippett - 19 - 199 - 98 - Southport
Gavin Urquhart - 18 - 186 - 78 - Rockhampton/Morningside
Ben Warren - 17 - 185 - 80 - Zillmere
Jesse White - 18 - 197 - 95 - Southport

The seven Queenslanders invited to undergo State screening are:-

Name - Age - Ht (cm) - Wt (kg) - Club
Scott Clouston - 19 - 191 - 84 - Morningside
Brad Howard - 18 - 183 - 72 - Toowoomba/Redland
Rhys Magin - 17 - 182 - 69 - Noosa/Suncoast Lions
Adam Mueller - 18 - 187 - 73 - Redland
Simon Plummer - 17 - 192 - 82 - Mt.Gravatt
Shaun Tapp - 17 - 194 - 91 - Western Magpies
Tauryan Zimmer - 17 - 186 - 82 - Southport

Sixteen of the 20 Queenslanders invited to either the camp or the State screening represented the State at the national U18 carnival this year. The other four were Warren, who was unfit at the time, Magin, who was an emergency, and Howard and Mueller, who wore Scorpions colors and were invited to State screening last year.

The 2006 representation is up on last year, when 10 players were invited to the camp and a further seven were chosen for State screening before six were ultimately drafted - Wayde Mills and Rhan Hooper (Brisbane Lions), Courtenay Dempsey and Austin Lucy (Essendon), Sam Gilbert (St.Kilda) and Michael West (Western Bulldogs).

TBH, and this is not a dig at St.Kilda, but when you look at the HT/WT of say a Hansen, thats why you really can't or shouldn't do what the Saints did with Koschitzke and throw him to the sharks straight away.Far too light and would get killed, or wind up with never ending recurring injury problems. Its also why its stupidity of fans thinking regardless of the natural ability these guys have, that it would be any type of quick fix or answer we've been looking for. They need time to develop physically. They are still boys.Again, I'm not slagging off St.Kilda because back then they prolly had little choice, but I do think to some degree that they are partly responsible for Koschitzke's brittleness by throwing him to the wolves from the word go in 2001.Developed a debilitating back injury and has hardly seen daylight since.

PICK 1.carlton- B.Gibbs
2.Essendon-Lachie Hansen,we need a tall running defender.
3.Kangaroos-Scott Gumbleton

The first tac game i see all year (after watching about 10 last year) - batsanis should have got the medal, absolutely dominated. always found space. Oakleigh did well by shutting down williams who had about 14 touches in 1st quarter then only about 5 for the rest of the game. allen was good when he was in the forward line but even though he got a bit of the ball he didnt knock my socks off (when he was pushed up the ground) but did look good in the forward line. Maric - he will be one to look for next year, thumping kick and a good forward, did well in the middle for an underage player.he was very good, and kicked 10 earlier this year, looks to have the goods. Kelly did well, goals win matches but he could have had many more(the reason i would have given the medal to batsanis) but dropped a couple of sitters and mucked a few up and had to end up handballing off ormucking it up as a result. Batsanis was good, not going to draft camp? he was sure to impress today.Otten was a good mark up front. Caruso is a good runner, knows where the ball is going and where to run its a pity him and the calder capt (horne? i have no idea) couldnt break the lines and lead a comeback in the 4th quarter. yeh thats my thoughts on the game, also the chargers ruckman dominated, dont know who he is i think they said he was about 100kg and had only recently started footy but he was great. and farmer in defence for calder did some decent things.
would have liked calder to win to send rob hyde out with a win after such a long service for the club

Was at the game today and never had seen any of these players before.

These were the players that I really liked and could have good futures.

Oakleigh Chargers

Kelly - Everyone saw what he was made of today

Batsanis - wow this kid is electric just kept on finding the ball my tac cup meddalist.

Calder Cannons

Matty O'Dwyer - good first quarter but slacked off for last 3 good signs and i hope carlton can snag him

Jake Williams - 16 possesions before half time kept finding the ball. When him and O'Dwyer weren't doing anything Oakleigh got on top of the game

Adam Maric - good first half performence 5 goals

McErlain - looked pretty good hard at the ball

Super impressed with Kelly after watching todays Grand Final. Played a captians game deep in the forward line. A Nuggety type, the Buchanan comparison is pretty close, I thought he had alot of Chapman about him also. Scored a bag of goals, and also gave many off to team mates. Not very tall but a very good build, solid. BOG and was givin the medal. Spoke well and seem to have a good head on him. For mine, looks a fine prospect. :thumbsu:

I thought for a 200cm lad Goldstein looks abit of a prospect and might be worth a rookie spot. For a player of his size he seemed quiet agile/mobile but above all else has a great set of hands.

Maric was, for mine the easy the outstanding player of the first half. Only 16 but looks ever bit a gun. Top 10 draft pick 2007?

Batsanis & MacKay both look handy.

Is Caruso the gun U18 player who has won the medal but they reckon won't get drafted 'cause of his size? Would be a real shame. Good enough to get a crack I would hope. Class.

Allen also looks a decent KPP prospect.

Scouting from the West

Hello there,

Im a Fremantle fan but I work within the WAFL league sides and have an insight to rookie drafting.

This year we have seen a huge jump in activity by Victorian clubs in relation to Rookie listing prospects within the WAFL.

Hawthorn and St Kilda recently held a joint screening for six players from the WAFL.

Players were:

Nathan Phillips, Peel 19yr old HFF/Wingman. 187cm 85kg.

- Played most of his games this year in the reserves for Peel, a majority of this time was spent up foward deep in attack. By round 12 he was leading the reserved goal-kicking for Peel, and second in the League, in a side that was regularly pummelled. His form was solid without being spectactular.

However it was his move into the midfield for a 3 week period which opened the eyes of most in the West. Opposed to Leroy Jetta on a Wing Phillips gathered 33 disposals and kicked two goals in a losing side, he was vying for BOG with Collard who kicked 5.
The next two weeks sore an 20+ possesions and goals sprinkled amongst the games.

Earned himself a league debut through the solid form and again played from up foward. Joined the "goal with first kick in league footy Club" against West Perth and was amongst the Best in a winning side at Arena. Also had a mark nominated for mark of the year.

Backed up this effort with another performance in the best in a game against the tigers, bagging three goals and wracking up 21 possesions from HFF.

Finished the year strongly with 2 goals 3 against Perth at Rushton and missed a few set shots he would normally have kicked.

3 games in League side for Peel showed he was not out of place. The 7 goals were not cheap either, most game when his side needed them, particularly in the win against the Falcons.

Assets:
Phillips is an aeralist, loves to take an overhead mark and has a set of hands to back them up. His set shot is also very solid. Has good distance on boths sides with his right being the preffered.
Also very fit, runs hard all day and has a 15.1 beep test to his name.

Liabilities: His handball, rarely handballs and when he does he normally hits a target. May have been told to kick because of his feild kicking skills, but certainly needs to use it more, especially in close.

Areas to work on: Acceleration, once he hits his top speed he's pretty sharp, first ten steps need to be worked on especially if he is to play as a midfielder who rests foward.
Tackling, prefers the bump to a tackle, needs to lay a few more to keep the pressure in the foward fifty. Got by on the workrate of Ballantyne in the Peel league side.

A solid rookie prospect, but I would imagine he would need to display the same form from the last three rounds of this year through a full season before he gets a call up. Good prospect with great skills.

Danny Chatres: Peel 21 yr old Ruckman/CHB/CHF 195cm 95kg (unofficial)

A very likely inclusion to a number of sides next year, has been linked with Essendon recently and has the form and agility to back it up.

Played all his football in the league side this year and worked well at both ends of the ground and as a foil in the middle for Gumbleton. Very agile bigman with good pace and a strong kick, worked well for Peel in the second half the year at both CHB and CHF.

Spent a period of time at Fullback where he performed well and was a danger with his penetrating boot.

Assets: Agillity, for a man his size he plays in a Cox like fashion, minus the skills on both sides and huge fitness levels. His overhead marking was also a feature as was his left foot missiles out of defence. Greatest asset is his leadership qualities, cleary the general in the back half of a very young side.

Liabilties: Closing speed, great in a pack or one on one situation but was shown up a few times in the season when the foward line was opened up by opposition coaches, certainly not a huge concern, but still a concern.
Also has no right boot.

Areas to Work on: Fitness, whilst still great, for the roles he playes he needs an extra 10 minutes in his tank to truly fulfill his talents. Has good rucking skills, but, as with most young ruckman, tapping to advantage still needs to be mastered, was sharked alot mid-year.

Shapes as a very solid KPP prospect, and if he is not taken by either of the W.A sides, I suggest that Carlton, Essendon and the Saints will be chasing him at some stage in the drafting period.

The other players screened were:
Clint Jones, South Fremantle, 22 yr old/ Wingman/HBF

Known quantity, similar to Priddis. Hardworking Midlfielder who finds alot of the footy and carries well. A ball magnet with good pace.

Needs to work on his skills, a littel scratchy.

Another very safe pick-up.

Andrew Strijk, West Perth 19 yr old/ Midfielder/ HFF

Didnt get to see alot of this boy as my work sees me employed south of the river. From what I have heard he is a very raw, but very talented youngster with good pace and takes a liking to carrying the ball.

I did witness his game against the Bulldogs and his run and carry were a feature, handy in front of goal.

His body needs a fair bit of work.

I wont put up his assets and liabilities because, I couldnt do that based on one game.

The other two were:

Michael Griffiths: East Fremantle 209cm 100 kg 23 yr old

If ever the Saints were looking for a Ruckman, but without the hassle to develop, here is the go. Originally from Port Melbourne this huge lump of a lad has excelled in the Ruck department for the Sharks. In a side widely criticised Griffiths has been one of the few Shining Lights.

Beat all-comers in terms of hit-outs for the year, good marking skills and as good as skills as you could hope for by foot from a ruckman that size.

Assets: Ruckwork, unlike many WAFL rucks, Griffiths has a knack of slotting them into the path of his on-ballers, worked well with Woewodin all year, no matter the scoreline. He also displays strong hands in pack situations, defeinitely a viable option operating for the goalsquare.

Liabilties: Fitness and workrate, the par go hand in hand but I believe, if put on an AFL list this boy can only get better in both areas. He also has a terrible, handpass from his left side.

Areas to Work on: Stoppages, particularly boundary throw-ins. He is very good at centre square contests and solid in bounce-downs, but for a boy his size, is beaten far too often from the throw-in, I could be nit-picking, but for a lad that size he should dominate, not contest.

Another, very likely option for a Rookie listing. Fremantle are the other club to express interest.

Steven Browne WP: Havent seen him play save for the 18's carnival, solid midfield type.

I hope this serves you well and gives you a little more inight into the depth Vic clubs are no investing into Scouting.

Cheers TP

Re: Scouting from the West

Well done Truth Personified.

This is the first that I've heard of any of those guys.

Much appreciated.

Re: Scouting from the West

Griffiths sounds interesting. With all the hype about monster ruckmen these days surely he will be picked up. What are his skills like?

They aren't the greatest, his field kicking is good for a ruckman, it is his handball that needs attention, tends to fire it out with no weight nor direction.

Having said that, his rucking ability covers those downfalls quite easily.

Consider this:

The WAFL has many ruckman, of AFL standard albeit the lower half.

Gardiner
Bandy
Spanderman
Newick
Warnock
Cambell.

All have been affilated with an AFL club, in the ruck contests this year, he defeated all those metioned above with relative ease.

Mojo didn't have Shane Edwards in his top 30, but his stocks have risen after a good show in the draft camp.

Yes he is skinny but I'd bet he is more likely to fill out than someone like schmidt. He has terrfic athletic qualities - especially impressed than he has a good wind tank. He seems to make slightly ambitious decisions but reminds me (in this way) of a young shaun burgoyne - experience will work it out. So why aren't we talking him up as a possible late first round/early second round pick? Please enlighten me - particlarly sa fans.

Teal Plums said:
And you haven't mentioned his ferocious tacking either, 10 tackles in an SANFL prelim final the other day.

Seems to have truckloads of desire.

Good call!

(I've only seen him play) about 3 games, but was super impressed

First impressions were something along the lines of "man, that little fella is going to get creamed" but he stood up to the physical play wonderfully well and seems super disciplined.

His tackling stood out over all his other attributes for mine.

malcolm said:
I have seen Shane play many games this year - has a big heart, super fit (3rd in the draft camp beep test), good skills, fantastic tackler.

Proven against men and not boys like most of the Vic U18.

Placed FIRST in the standing vertical jump (@ 69cm),

THIRD in the shuttle run (Beep test) (@ 15.04),

THIRD in the 3 km time trial (@ 10.00 min)

Clearly has fitness on his side, and from all reports it seems he is as game as they come.
I think he is a potential 2nd round pick.

Cheers TP

His father played for the Royals, couldnt agree more with what you have said, separates himself from the pack in that he always looks to the corridor.

I think St Kilda will aim to recruit the two best available midfielders with their first two picks and select a tall defender type with their 4th round pick. It is unlikely that we will take the picks in the next two rounds (1 at most) unless more delistings are in the works.

If we have a target in the preseason draft, we will most probably take just the three picks in this draft.

definates in that group- petterd, proud, armitage, urquhart, renouf
definates you missed - hampson

probables in that group - dzufer, tippet
probables you missed - smith, kiel, grose

i don't think warren and magin will be picked up this year, they both have another year in the system and from what i've heard they haven't done enough this year to get a certain spot but may wait to see how they develop next year

the definites speak for themselves.

the others- tippet i'm unsure about but he is a good KPP prospect i think he will go. heard good reports from his year at southport can take a contested mark and deadly infront of goal.

Dzufer people tend to have mixed opinions so i'm not sure.

Smith played extremely well in the allies game off a HBF showing his running capabilities and that he can play up the ground not just forward. also hear he had a great year on the wing for mt gravatt. like to hear from the mt gravatt guy on here if he can confirm that? i think he will go.

Kiel also played a very good allies game aswell as a good grand final. plays with tippet at southport and had a good year. can play midfield and a run with role and kicks goals. late round pick for mine.

grose good key back with good ability to read the play and not too many around so always in demand.

My opinion from what I've seen of these guys.
Proud - seen a couple of times looks to have the goods and agree top 20
Armitage - knows how to find the footy and no question marks on his courage top 30
Urqhuart - definately has the poise and skills to make it, has been troubled by injuries. Only seen twice and run of half back well against Dandenong and struggled prelim against southport not a lot of game time. Will be drafted i'm sure top 50.
Renouf - have seen alot of him and is a great ruckman, and now with backline to his bow will lift him higher in the draft. Commitment is exemplary and can run all day top 20 definately
Tippett - just what you need is a bloke who can take contested marks and then develop into a ruckman. I think will have a similar afl transition like paul salmon, start full forward and then develop. My tip is Collingwood might take him now they have two rop 10 picks, if not Sydney. First round pick.
Petterd - good leadership material, will be good of hbf or wing to start off and then move to midfield top 30
Kiel - has the class of all the smalls in QLD, and has the ability to do a number of rolls, from midfield to tagging to goal sneak.Similar style to Andrew raines. doesnt get to many mentions but to be invited to draft camp twice you know someone interested. top 50
Dzufer - seen a few times and obviously can play and given important rolls for zillmere plays sunny coast in state and is definately one of their key players, once again invited to draft camp twice so he's being looked at top 70
Smith- same as Dzufer plays sunny coast and is definately there forward target and has a good body structure. Sounds like fitness has improved, certainly has ability shown in QLD. hope he gets drafted but definately rookie.
Hampson- big blokes dont grow on trees and even though renouf is the best ruck in QLD this bloke will come under consideration. likely drafted definate rookie

Warren - not this year and i think to young to be rookied

White - struggled to make southport seniors latter half of the year after being injured, question mark over fitness, just not sure, but been to draft camp twice - rookie list

Grose - havent seen to much cant really comment

Probably 8 QLDers drafted 3 rookied from the 13 that went to camp

from the information i have recieved, tippet took no part in the endurance testing due to a stomach virus, hampson ran around 13.5 for the beep and white was around 13.3 In the 3k i hampson was the next QLD tall to come in behind renouf and then it was white. both hampson and white ran reasonable 3k times but yes they were over shadowed by renoufs performance. as far as ranking the boys this is how i would see it:

TALLS
renouf
hampson
tippet
white
*tippet is a hard one to pick he may go earlier or later it is hard to tell. he has certainly shown alot and has a big enough body that he could start playing as a KPP in the AFL next year.

MEDIUMS
armitage
proud
petterd
urquart
smith/kiel
dzufer
* smith and kiel is a hard one both extremely talented players and have had a good year. i might have smith just a touch in front of kiel as i have seen him play in numerous roles this year (forward, mid, back) and he has been damaging to the opposition no matter what position he has lined up in. this however is to take nothing away from kiel, he is a very damaging player and can influence the out come of a game. hard to split.

NICK THE PIE MAN said:
If anyone is interested, I just posted this yesterday in a thread on the Brissy Lions board.
--------------------------------------

To be honest, I have seen more games played by the Gold Coast draft hopefulls than Brissy players but I will do my best.

My overall ranking- (Only my humble opinion, and opinions will vary. There may be a few surprises here that go against the grain)

1) Kurt Tippett (Southport)
Key position. FF/Ruck.
Another basketball convert. Maybe a touch of Southport bias here but I am very impressed by this bloke and the best QLD'er I have seen this year. Very agile for a big man and quick on the lead. Can take a contested mark and is good in front of goal. Plays in the ruck as well and does that well. Huge scope for improvement. Have a feeling he may be snapped up early.

2) David Armitage (M'side)
Midfielder or Half back/forward
Tough and courageous. His stocks have risen after testing very well at the recent draft camp. A ball magnet. Likely to go first round. I have no doubt the Lions would take him if their pick was at 8-12.

3) Brent Renouf (Southport)
Ruckman/key position
Fantastic ruckman who runs all day. There is no doubt in my mind he will play at least 100 games of AFL football. Great commitment.

4) Albert Proud (Mt Gravatt)
Midfielder
Pacey and knows how to find the ball. Has the goods but tends to drift in and out of games. Question mark over his discipline on and off the field.

5) Haydn Kiel (Southport)
Midfielder/winger
For some reason is not rated as highly as Petterd or Armitage but I rate the bloke hugely. Has pace, agility and is highly skilled. Has a Justin Sherman type of build. I think he tends in drift in and out of games but has all the right attributes. Out of all the Southport draft hopefulls, he finished the higest in the club's best and fairest. I will be watching draft day with interest and desperately hopes he is picked up. He deserves it. Will be a real bargain for whoever takes him because I think he will go late if at all. Very damaging.

6) Ricky Petterd (Broadbeach)
Midfielder/on-baller
Rated highly down south after featuring for QLD at the U/18 c'ship and won the Division 2 medal. Is very smooth and has leadership qualities. Will probably go in the second round. I have seen quite a lot of him this year, and while he has been good, he has been fairly quiet for Broadbeach this year in the games I have seen.

7) Gavin Urquhart (M'side)
Midfielder/defender
Haven't seen enough of him to make a proper judgement. Has been troubled by injuries this year but has the skill to make it. Should be taken late. High possession winner.

8) Daniel Dzufer (Zillmere)
Half Forward Flank/Wingman
He has slipped off the radar a little bit and I think he is a likely rookie list prospect for Brissy. Kicking is inconsistent.

POBT said:
I'll do the same as Nick and rank the Queenslanders in the order in which I rate them - not necessarily the order that I expect them to be drafted. I didn't see the last two AFLQ finals of the season but have seen enough of most of the Queenslanders to provide a (very limited) opinion of them!

1. Armitage - I think he has enough of the required attributes to become the best midfielder Queensland has produced in quite a few years. He is skilful, athletic and tough. I'd take him with anything from about pick 8 on.

2. Renouf - I always considered him the best tall from Queensland this year but his late season performances for Southport put him in a different league. If he was beaten in one aspect of his game, he simply influenced the game somewhere else. He probably won't go top 10 this year but most other years he would be a big show. A top 15 player in my rankings.

3. Proud - I only leave him ranked 3rd because of his potential. An injury riddled season when he could least afford it changes my ranking of him in comparison to others. On reputation, he would be the first Queenslander picked. I wouldn't pick him if I had a top 10 pick. Top 20 only.

4. Hampson - This one is based on the opinion of someone who knows a little bit about Mt Gravatt footballers and, to a lesser extent, the couple of times I watched him play. I would take him with any pick after about pick 25 because he is athetic enough and skilful enough for a ruckman and certainly has the physical characteristics.

5. Smith. If we took Smith with our Aker pick (34), I would not be upset although realistically he would probably be available at our 3rd or 4th rounder and would be a wasted pick at 34. There's a bit of magic with him that makes him stand out from the others and he is a midfielder who kicked bags of goals at the carnival. Given the midfield quality Qld had at the carnival this year, I don't hold it against him that he barely had a run on ball. In my top 30.

6. Tippett. There is a chance the Paul Salmon comparison will hold in which case Tippett may well be the bolter. I rank him as a top 50 player but I cannot decide whether there is room for a Salmon type full forward in today's game. Ottens is the only player I can think of who has Tippett's dimensions and holds down a key forward post regularly - even someone like Nathan Thompson is about 5cm shorter. On rucking alone, I wouldn't take Tippett with a top 50 pick. But if his form as a forward holds, then he would be worthy of a top 15 spot. Somewhere between 40 and 50 IMO.

7. Petterd. His carnival form was top 10 material but on my limited viewings his local form was not as good as most on this list. He'll go higher than I have rated him because of that carnival form but I have doubts over his effectiveness when he has less time. Top 50. Being a local boy, I wouldn't be too concerned if Brisbane took him at 38 but I prefer others.

8. Dzufer. Dzufer's time trial results lifted him from a probable rookie to a probable draftee IMO. He does read the play well and he is a very good size. I thought he was a bit too "in-between" in size but his camp results persuaded me that recruiters may now see his additional size for an on-ball type as an advantage. In the local footy, he stepped up in every final which is a good sign as far as attitude goes. Another top 50 candidate.

9. Urquhart. I really haven't seen a lot of him. He has looked OK when I have seen him and I know he is highly rated by some but there is something I can't quite put my finger on that means that I don't share that opinion. Undoubtedly will be drafted but I wouldn't use anything higher than a 4th rounder for him.

10. Kiel. After a glowing endorsement by Nick a few weeks ago, I spoke to a couple of people regarding Kiel. There are apparently a couple of clubs interested including Brisbane although they tend to follow all the local boys. He'll be on the rookie list at Brisbane and may sneak it for a very late pick.
