Draft Televised?

4 mins is way too long to pick. Especially in the first round. AFL clubs generally need about 40 seconds and can request for more time if need be.

Reason why NFL and NBA clubs require so much time (I think its like 7mins in the NFL) is because you can wheel and deal on the spot by trading. Teams trade down for more picks, trade back into the draft if a player they like is still there, etc. In the AFL, no trades are/can be done.

That's a fair point, I just can't think of any other way of making it a Good TV event. The 4 minutes was about allowing the commentators enough time to discuss each draftee. Interviewing the top 3 guys while the draft is taking place is just stupid. The commantaters provided very little analysis on any of the draftees. Pickering tried to talk about a draftee at one point and then Hudson told him off. :thumbsd:

Top 10 was even worse than I was expecting.

Richard Hinds (SMH journalist) summed up what we were thinking I think.

Let's not let the draft interfere with the Patton interview. Hilarious.

I was there... They ****ed up the sound and the Patton interview actually interfered with the draft as the sound cut over the top of the first couple of picks in the second round. Hilarious.

Rubbish telecast after first round you couldn't here a pick because those pudding heads only wanted to talk all the time about nothing and have there heads on the screen .....johnson ,pickering, the little bloke with the big head etc .:thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd:

If you had pressed the red button there was no talking... Just picks

Things that need to change for the future to make it a true event fit for television, which is where I think the draft should head. The NRL, NBL and all other leagues don't have a draft, we should embrace the draft.

1. The first pick should be pick 1, not pick 10!
2. There should be an increased gap between picks to allow for experts to discuss the picks and explain each player.
3. The panel should be experts on the draft, not just purely former players.
4. If you want to complete interviews, then nominate a gap between rounds that allows the telecast to interview the top draft picks.
5. The AFL have to take it seriously, it was a basket case. Essendon having to say their picks multiple times, then Geelong had to say theirs again. By the time they had attempted to fix whatever lame issue there was, the Hawks had already picked Hill even if their microphone was not working!

It is such a shame that the AFL is taking the piss with regards to the draft.

I agree on all 5 of those points.
