Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

People were also melting over Denver Grainger-Barras...

The reality is that drafting is still (and always will be) an inexact science as your form at 17 doesn't always translate to being an AFL level player a few years later. It's getting better, and you of course prefer having the first pick than the tenth or the sixtieth, but you can never be sure.
Even worse when you pick ppl with very average form(brander) or no form(chesser)

Means we're taking Sharp.
That's the way I read this.
It's 2nd hand info from someone involved in recruiting for a VIC based club.
Means whatever we are puting out there is being believed by everyone we expected it to.
CDT is the "unicorn" and we cant get enough of him and we decided mid year he was our target, this is the info attached to the rumour??

Post on the tigers board, no idea if legitimate but other posters seem to think his mail is ok.

—————————————————————
We are very interested in a crop of Indigenous boys. We sent the KGI team to WA a couple of months ago to meet and spend time with them and we love a kid called Pickett. I expect he will be taken with whatever pick 38 ends up being. We are certain to use that pick on an Indigenous kid and will probably bid on some of the west coast academy players here if they haven’t been selected yet but Pickett is the kid we want.

The club loved what we did bringing players that had played together in last year and particularly the bond it has created amongst the kids at the club.

The plan is replicate that again this year but this time it will be with a batch of boys from SA.

Our hope is that WC take Dursma and CDT or Robey because we will be taking Sharp and Cumming at 3 & 4. We will take Sharp of the board with pick 3 immediately and then try to turn pick 4 into pick 5 with a trade with Essendon for them to take either CDT or Robey whoever the eagles don’t take. Our aim is to get a future 2nd and Essendons pick to help with our academy stuff next year.
—————————————————————

To be honest if I were Richmond this is exactly what I would hope for and do.
Richmond taking Sharp goes against everything I have heard. They have Smillie who they expect to be a similar player to Sharp, so personally, I cant see them going Sharp with that pick. But who knows I guess. Its not like recruiters are announcing anything.

Good, draft him anyway! See if he goes home after 3 years, if he does, worth a good pick or trade.

If true, since when does a young draftee start threatening an interested club, or show disinterest in going there? Has that happened before? Most players are happy to be selected into the AFL full stop. Would set a new precedent shirley?
Well there was the grand-daddy of all flight risks - Nathan Buckley.

If the AFL had been serious back in the day, they'd have barred him from moving to Collingwood after the collusion between them before and during his Bears year.

Robey plays a few finals and is a bolter even tho not the medallist . Banfield plays a blinder finals series in WA . Nothing, crickets .

Similarly both the country and the Allies were poor in the champs. No better then WA. But every West Australian gets discounted.

If you've got farro going top 10 and Banfield not making it into top 50's then the draft is essentially flat from 10 to 50. I chook raffle.

Training with the mids is great, but if you weren't a high level mid at u18 or WAFL level (with AFL attributes), i doubt you're all of a sudden going to be an elite mid at AFL level even if moved there.

We just don't have enough players that were high level mids at u18/WAFL level.
Excuse me we will already have TWO former Larke Medallist midfielders in Jack Graham and Dev Rob next year. The same medal that is apparently one of the reasons we should be drafting Dyson Sharp. If we kept Sheed and Oscar and brought David Swallow out of retirement, then drafted Sharp we could’ve had SIX of them!! A midfield consisting only of Larke Medallists and one at full forward. That would be some high level U18s right there 🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅

WEST COAST EAGLES

Main list 47 of 48

38 Senior

2 Category B

7 Rookies

1 Rookie spot for train on

4 National Picks

2 Rookie Upgrades

List balance targets

Small/General Forwards 2

Wings 2

Tall/Small Defender

Ruck

Tall Forward

Centre Midfielder

Draft Selections

Pick 1 – Willem Duursma

Pick 3 – Cooper Duff-Tytler

Pick 15 – Aidan Schubert

Pick 30 – Tylah Williams

Pick 39 – Charlie Banfield

Rookie – Hunter Holmes, Koby Evans

Category B – Wes Walley

Rookie Upgrades – Ryan Maric, Tyrell Dewar

This was easily the hardest one to get right and the Eagles fans demand the best, so the pressure is on. Duursma and Duff-Tytler has long been a rumoured pair and for good reason – both have shown to be the standout talents in the open draft and their upside is also high.

If not Duff-Tytler I could see Taylor being a shock pick especially if Eagles do follow through on a bid on Dean, showing they really want a key defender, then having Taylor right there if they want him.

Pick 15 is another really hard one to pick as the Eagles need to cover plenty of different roles. If they take Taylor they could pair him with teammate Dovaston, or maybe a high upside talent in Barker. Bids for Williams and Banfield might not happen, but if any do then Williams likely goes the highest and I imagine the Eagles make some moves to not go into deficit.

It’s been reported Eagles will only take four picks but if Banfield is bid on I would make sure to match as I feel he has AFL qualities either as a tall wingman or contested marking forward. Evans is a slight chance for a bid but more likely to make it through the rookie draft. West Coast only has one category B spot which is likely to be used on Walley.

Schubert and CDT….. another year to wait for these top quality mids

Can’t see Sharp being a flight risk, seems the complete opposite personality but who knows.

Who have been the WA draft talent that were rumoured big flight risks? Assuming Luke Jackson because he was linked back home from very early on.

Just heard a whisper that Sharp has told the WCE if they draft him he will go home after 3 years.
This comes from an opposition club, so maybe trying to throw a rock in the pond.
Just seems against everything we have heard from Sharp and those in SA who now him better than us!!
Not sure I would place much credit in the rumour, but has anyone got any better intel on if this is remotely true??
Also thinks we are taking CDT with pick 2!!
Not posted for melts but just interested in any intel??
We take him anyways and if he does it will coincide with Dan Curtin contract coming to an end. 🤟

Hunter Holmes rookie!

I kinda like it, just on the off chance he turns into his brother in 2 yrs and then the cats come for him TK style.

Don’t let Essendon get Robey because I’m coming for all you eagles fans who said Essendon had to trade picks 5, 6 and a future first for your pick 2.

movie night GIF

Done my first mock draft of the year only covering the first round for now but I’ll just give the picks for us rather than the whole first round (unless anyone wants the full list)

Pick 1 - Willem Duursma
Pick 3 - (after Uwland bid) Dyson Sharp
Pick 13 - (after trading up with Carlton) Sam Grlj

I’m anticipating 4 bids in the top 10😬 hence pushes pick 9 to pick 13.

Anyways this fills much needed holes for us especially with midfield depth and young guns. If Lachy dovaston slipped past Melbourne’s pick to ours I would be very stoked with him and probably would’ve taken him.

The big winner is Dyson Sharp who fills the void of major ball winner, who couldn’t have performed better in the national championships with an average of 27 disposals and 1.3 goals across 4 games. He was promoted to the Central Districts seniors team in the SANFL during the year chalking up 9 games to go with an average of 14.3 disposals and 3.3 tackles. With experience in the seniors, he will be a big competitor and huge addition for us if we do indeed pick him.

Sam Grlj is probably one of my favourite prospects in this years pool. He has terrific upside the more of the footy he gets while using his speed/endurance to burn opponents. Running a sub-six minute 2km and sub-three second 20m sprint shows he can be a versatile midfielder. A solid season through the talent league playing 7 games and averaging 20.3 disposals and 5.0 tackles a game while also featuring for VIC Metro in all 4 championship games averaging 17 disposals and 2.5 marks. His work ethic is second to none and will only get better throughout the years.

The most obvious pick here and guaranteed is Willem Duursma at pick 1 from the Gippsland Power. He’s set himself apart this season with his ability to play multiple positions at a young age and still find ways to get the footy and dominate. In his four national championship games he averaged 24.2 disposals and 5.2 marks, while at talent league level he went at 23.5 disposals and 1.2 goals a game in his 13 appearances. Running a 6:19 minute 2km and 2.997 second 20m sprint whilst being 193cm shows he is damaging with his profile to find himself in space to use his skills.

Will be intrigued who everyone else would select at these picks. These are just my thoughts, I don’t claim to be an expert in the draft field as others but it’s something I find enjoying come this time of year.

So yeah it’s all an exercise to replace what was lost but with 4 extra rookie spots it might not actually matter and you just take best available with the first 4 picks 😂

Theres no guarantee your taking Sharp at 2, sounds very unlikely. Twomey said Sharps start point is dons today. Your 80% CDT at 2 and 20% Robey (is my % atm)
I think you’re about spot on with the pick 2 percentages. I could see it being nearer to 50/50 as it gets closer to draft night. Twomey has sounded less confident lately on CDT being a lock at 2, Robey is the next highest ranked and we need players that can play midfield.
