No not a meme at all - I thought NSW/Qld academy kids were allowed to be matched at any point but everyone else's academy kids could only be matched after a certain point in the draft or something, like there is a legitimate difference in the rules.

Is/was this not an actual thing?
Was changed for last years draft - i.e how Essendon matched for Kako in the first round

No offence. But if the best CV since Rowell slips through us and turns out to be a star then that's sackable right there.

The recruiting team should front the board and be sacked on the spot. You can choose to blindly disregard a CV of his caliber but you shall be sacked if it falls waste side.

There is ZERO ****ing excuse for the scenario where we skip dyson and he turns out to be a star. NONE ZIP. Fired on the spot. Ideally blacklisted from the club

I prefer my recruiters actually judge talent based on output.

I still have faith and believe in the dots
Good point, the saints give themselves a pat on the back everyday as Billings had a better CV than Bont. The Dees as well constantly reflect how Scully's CV was better than Dusty's prior to being drafted. Same with Tigers with Tambling over Buddy as well. Who cares about potential or how their career pans out, all that matters is pre draft CV

Do we need to have 3000 points to still have pick 1 though or as long as we still have more than 2481 points which is pick 2 we get to keep it?

No one has ever had to slide back a top pick as far as I know where a points deficit is not enough to fall under the points of the next pick in line.

Last I checked it is applied to the first pick in the round the player was taken.

In this case the deficit would be applied to our 2026 2R as pick 36 would be in that round.

Thanks for the clarification, I must admit I’m not fully versed on all the nuances of the points deficit option.

So I have a genuine query here hopefully someone can answer.

Say we bundle up 34 & 41 on the night for a higher pick and then a bid comes in for say Williams at 36. Since we have list spots we can still match but just go into deficit?

If this is the case then after a 10 percent discount the points needed would be 280 points down from 317 points.

The difference currently between picks 1 and 2 are

Pick 1 (3000) to pick 2 (2481) points = 519 points

Pick 2 (2481) to Pick 3 (2178) points = 303 points

So if my maths is correct and they don’t change the points value index next year we could technically match a bid on Tylar Williams at 36 and still not have it affect either pick 1 or 2 next year if we were to finish 17th or 18th

Is this correct or am I missing something?
Yes! We won’t finish 17th or 18th next year

What if the player they pick instead of Dyson also turns out to be a star?

What then?
Good God man. You will send him into a loop and fry his brain. If we don’t pick Sharp at 2 and he turns into a star the recruiters failed but the player they picked at 2 is a star so it’s a success but it wasn’t Sharp who is a star so they failed but the player they picked is a star so it’s a success but…

If he lasts to 13 he'd be one of the bigger sliders
Possibly. He is being hyped based on his Combine results and the logical expectation of where the game is headed (i.e. line-breaking runners), however, his actual form on field this year isn't top 5 worthy IMO. He wasn't particularly dynamic and underwhelming through the Champs and he only occasionally showed his full attributes at Talent League, rather than consistently.
I can see what he could be and why he will go so early in the draft, but on form he deserves to be in the teens.

Cochrane and Walker I’m of the opinion would both go number 1 this year. I’d probs have Duurs and CDT after those two, then Arki Butler for me rates ahead of Robey. Sharp and XT probably in the same sort of ranges right now as Van Dyke and Robinson but I haven’t watched too much of those two and being bottom agers they’ll probably rate ahead at the end of next year on current trajectory.
Basically proves the point I was gesturing at. The best two prospects next year are likely to be club tied. Clubs don’t just trade pick 2 for a future pick and give up capital for the luxury. Next years draft looks better, but the guy was exaggerating big time with his comments.

No mate, when Sharp is picked at 9+ in spite of having “the best CV since Rowell” even though he couldn’t go back to back AA unlike a few just last year.

Our recruiters passing him up at 2 will look like fools.
Because his bottom age was stacked with mid stars very deep.

Somebody like Sid Draper bottom age was Harley Reid class.

Put Dyson in Harley reid class as a bottom age Dyson would be AA

Anyone could match for a few years, then they changed it to northern states only for a while costing a few clubs some of their NGA players (Mac Andrew to Melbourne the most famous one iirc), now they’ve swapped back.

We couldn’t match a bid on Lance Collard in Harley’s year, as he went prior to Pick 40, but we could have the option to match any bid on our NGAs this year even if Richmond went crazy at Pick 3 and slapped a bid in for Wes Walley.

Edit: how’s poindexter over here explaining what other people in the thread have already addressed and I just hadn’t read that far, pathetic.

You’re advocating CDT aren’t you? So the more apt comparisons are to the forward/ruck types taken very early rather than to Bont, Buddy or Dusty. And there have been plenty of drafting disasters in that regard…

Tom Boyd as pick one in 2013.
Jonathan Patton at pick one in 2011.
Peter Wright at pick 8 in 2014.
Josh Schache at pick 2 in 2015.
Kepler Bradley at pick 6 in 2003.

Some of these guys were more forward than ruck, some were entirely forwards and Bradley ended up more as a defender. But CDT had only moderate impact as a ruck in the under 18 championships, and he’s undersized as a ruck. So there’s a real chance he needs to make it as a KPP, a position in which he’s entirely unproven.

It's amazing that hypothetical splits and slides are still being discussed. Club has been settled on Duursma and CDT for a while, lock it in

Pyke said we are focusing on retaining and using 1 and 2.

Perfect comment for anyone interested in trading for pick 2.

Make us an offer we cant refuse or dont bother.

Getting tired of the mock draft nuffies on You Tube suggesting 2 for 5 and a single 2nd rounder. Like why would we even waste a second thinking about that type of offer. Trade out of rhe very top of the draft for a 2nd round pick in a weak draft. Nuffies.

This is a great answer and I totally agree but I should tell you I was just making a meat pun

Collard is the prime example I remembered, but I can't remember us having a highly rated prospect last yeat so wasn't aware the rules had changed.

"I just think wherever my name gets called out, if it gets called out, so be it. Wherever I go, I'm just going to rock up at the doorstep, crack in and try to build into whatever culture may be building and try to put my best foot forward and make a good impression."

Got to love his drive. If he ends up at the Dons he might actually see them break their finals drought.
