Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

Real interesting thing with Carlton is that they genuinely might have a chance of getting both their picks in before a bid. As things stand, he's probably not gonna be bid on in the top 4, it's too high. Essendon have a bunch of key backs already, don't think they bid. Comes down to Melbourne - will they bid? Not familiar enough with their list to say. But if they don't, it's carlton's pick. Then hawks, who likely had to agree to not bid when they got that pick off Carlton. Then Carlton again at 11, which is actually at least 14 by then.

Might see Dean slipping to the mid teens and Carlton trading some future assets for points this year to match. If they walked away with, say, 2 of Schubert/Lindsay/Dovaston/Farrow and then a matched bid on Dean I think they'd have just about won the draft.
You may not be aware of the unrest dislike with Dons and Blues. At 5 assuming Blues hold it, I expect a bid on Dean. Pick 5 will likely be 8 by then.

I would be very surprised Dean is a mid teens bid

Would we take pick 5 and Essendons future 1st for pick 2? Could still get Duursma and a pure mid while banking for the stronger WA heavy draft next year. Probably a top 3 pick.

I think we definitely would but also don't think Essendon would offer that. Saying that we offered future first trying to get Curtin 2 years back so anything can happen on draft night.

I'd be open to swapping later picks or something as steak knives probably.

I like the idea but Dons indicated they wanted more picks next year not this year.

Tom Mitchell x1 year as a DFA?

Whether consciously or unconsciously, I think there will be pressure on Essendon to be aggressive and trade up. Whilst most admired their stand of doing nothing on Merrett, that’s a defensive move that doesn’t make them worse than this year but also doesn’t make them better.

Not trading up to get fan favourites Duursma or CDT could likewise be seen as choosing to do nothing, especially when it’s not unreasonable to assume us or Richmond would be open to it.

It’s a great position for us to be in.

Whatever we do we absolutely should in no circumstances trade pick 1. Pick 2 Im far less fussed about

But am pretty excited about Duursma tbh. Reckon hes exactly the type we need even though a few seem to be worried about him not being a "pure" mid, or what his brothers have done for some strange reason

Looks like there's a stand out midfielder and a stand out young ruck prospect at #1 and #2 respectively. On paper that is the absolute dream scanario. If that is the consensus -and from a few reports I've read seems to be the case, then you just take those two and use 13 on whatever other mid is still there. We honestly cannot have a contending midfield without a genuine ruck and he'll be at a perfect age in 2028.

CDT isnt a ruck though.

A serviceable ruck picked up via trade when we are hitting finals is fine, and has proven fine in plenty a premiership side. From where we’ve been - picking the best two mids if that comes off will be way more influential in us contending in the years to come

The chances that he’s off the board by Melbournes first pick are incredibly high given the needs of WC, ESS, and RIC have midfielders at #1
I’d find it unlikely that both Sharp and Cumming are gone, I see them both getting through Richmond’s picks. Essendon won’t take both.

Regardless I’m taking whoever’s at 7 and 8 over pick 2.

I'll be fairly happy whatever way West Coast decide to go. The last time I actually melted because of footy was when we beat North Melbourne late in '23 putting us above them on the ladder and having us miss out on Harley. I was so pissed off! I wasn't on BF back then but I imagine the melts would've been thermonuclear. Extra funny considering it was over a win. Anyway I didn't like that feeling one bit and decided to just chill out and let whatever happen from then on. Luckily Norf did the funniest thing and beat the Suns a few rounds later to put them back on top.
I'm with you Lister, more enjoyable to just buckle up and enjoy the ride

CDT reminds me of Ethan Read as an underager TBH. Good athletic profile but not particularly dominant in any position at any level he played this year, except for perhaps school football, a level I couldn't care less about in my assessment of draftees.
Ethan is looking pretty decent, keeping our man Walters out of the side

I see Cumming making it through, but at that point I’d rather take Sharp at 2, personally. Can see why you’d want to go Cumming and x player though. Maybe a Schubert

Just on Read.

Archer Reid compares pretty well against Ethan Read considering one is in a one win team and the other is in a top 6 team. Both from the same draft and Ethan is holding his place in that team last year.

Really hope Archer can sort out his goal kicking over the off season.
