Rookie Me Central 2025 Draft Guide

Matthew Clarke on Gettable 17/11

Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

Watching Gettable and I get the very clear impression that Twomey doesn’t really have a great line of sight to what West Coast are planning

Beyond the obvious of Duursma and CDT being the one, two punch at the top of the draft which has been the widely held belief for weeks he doesn’t offer much else on West Coast. That we’re probably going to bid on Uwland at pick 2 and maybe Dean after that is about the extent of it.

Pretty much the rest of his comments around West Coast are things that aren’t going to happen - no offer from Essendon for pick 2, no deal likely with Carlton for pick 9, Farrow won’t get to our third pick

A lot of talk about the likes of Taylor, Robey, Cumming, Farrow, Grlj, Sharp being looked at by Richmond, Essendon and Melbourne but not a single peep about us even contemplating any of those players - surely our recruiters aren’t that blinkered to not even be talking to that group. Twomey would have us believe otherwise

Then absolute donuts on who we might be looking at with pick 13 - not a single player discussed in that range was linked to West Coast

Clubs with picks just before and after pick 13 were linked to the following:

Hawthorn- Lindsay, Farrow
GWS- Farrow, Marsh, Taylor, Pickett, Nairn, Ludowyke, Grlj
Bulldogs- Lindsay, Dovaston, Taylor
Adelaide- Marsh, Thredgold, Taylor, Barker
Geelong- Lindsay, Taylor

It’s almost as if he forgot we have that pick

But it was what he said about one player in particular that got me thinking - Cameron Nairn (the kid who kicked 7 goals for SA against WA)

Was mentioned as a possibility for Melbourne with one of their two picks with the suggestion that clubs who rate him highly haven’t been talking about him much on the basis they think he might slip through

There’s been next to no discussion on him around these parts, possibly because most rankings have him around the mid 20’s mark. He’s also more of a high half forward type rather than a midfielder so not an immediate need as such

But, his relative obscurity and the fact Twomey doesn’t seem to have any inkling on who our target with pick 13 might be led me to wonder if Massey has been quietly working away on Nairn in the background

Running capacity, leading patterns and versatility are among his strengths so would suit what McQualter is trying to build

On face value he would seem to be a reach at what is likely to be pick 16 or so but in light of Twomey’s comments perhaps he isn’t

This is his Rookie Me Central profile

We have been pretty vocal about wanting to move up that 3rd pick, first we did the Starc deal that moved from 16-13 now we are talking about trying to get it to the Top 10. That doesn't sound like the strategy they would take if they are really eyeing off a guy like Nairn who isn't expected to come into range until >20. Would see like a big waste of capital to climb the ladder to take a guy rated well below that range.

They can.

Do you think they care if they end up with a 2026 2nd round deficit?

They will likely trade in another F3rd with all the pick trades it will have lined up or just live rrade a 3rd rounder this year to cover it.
No they couldn’t, picks 2 and 3 are worth roughly 4150 inc the -10% even if they were to use all their picks to match that (which is generous) they wouldn’t be able to match a pick in the first 20 due to going over the allowed deficit.

If we want Addinsall we can easily ensure we get him.

Well that didn't age well!

It's almost like the recruiters know more than us fans. Noone has been talking about this guy in the media as being rated near the top dozen. Obviously there are some clubs that have him rated there though so perhaps he is our target and we believe that he will go before our natural 3rd pick?

Rated at 30 by ESPNs latest rankings (only one below Addinsall who we are also reportedly interested in)...

30. Cameron Nairn (32)
Central District/South Australia
FWD, 188cm
National Championships: 4 games, 10.0 disposals, 2.3 goals
SANFL U18s: 13 games, 20.5 disposals, 1.7 goals

Nairn is a quick-thinking forward that kicks goals in a variety of ways. He doesn't have an elite athletic profile but finds space inside 50 and makes his opportunities count, plus showed glimpses further afield late in the year by racking up touches through the midfield.

Traits similar to: Nic Martin

Doesnt really read like someone worth trading up for and taking early/mid first round but if he turns into Nic Martin, Id be happy with him at 13.

Would be a strange selection by us , given we gave up pick 20 to move up to 13 then to pick a guy who would have been there at our pick anyway.

It’s almost too nuts that it has to be true 😂

People place way too much importance on these mocks and the group think. They're good for a read and a general feel for those of us who know nothing, but there's always suprises and clubs trying to keep things close to their chest to ensure they get who they wamt.

Highlighted a bit by this Nairn late bolt, it only takes one club to rate someone more than what the general conseus is to mean its not a reach if another club really wants them.

Maybe LeCras like?

Anyone have much knowledge on Addinsall?

I know he had a great 2km time trial, and great standing/running vertical.

Had a poor champ and struggles for impact per possession like Dev Robertson. I guess because he's a forbidden GCS academy prospect that people here rate him.

Will he be better than Fraser McInnes?

That's where he is at ATM.

That was my original thought on him, but his 2024 season was mighty impressive at times, and he's got more to his game than McInnes ever did. His 2025 season was so disappointing, he looked unfit and unprepared. He should be thoroughly dominating WAFL level and pushing hard for selection.

Won't get past Essendon, IMO. They've just delisted Hobbs and appear to have quietly shopped Tsatas around. He's also a huge Essendon nuff and they are in dire need of someone with leadership.

Sadly, I tend to agree

I feel like they might paid Sharp with Cumming and bring two SA boys over

1. WC - Duursma
2. GC - Uwland (match)
3. WC - CDT
4. GC - Patterson (match)
5. RICH - Robey
6. CAR - Dean (match)
7. BRIS - Annable (match)
8. RICH - Taylor
9. ESS - Sharp
10. ESS - Cumming

Hall and Allan haven't proven themselves yet. Why did we finish 18th with contested possessions if we had these big bodied midfielders already in our team.
Because 6 of the 12 players he mentioned weren't on our list last year and 2 others didn't play midfield.

There's a lot of change already taking place to address our midfield woes, some of that is bringing in mature bodies, others is development of our young team and others is trying players in different positions.

Sharp would be a great pick, but we should be selecting him on the merit of him as a player not just because he's a midfielder.

Except when Walter requests a trade next year. But they let Jack Martin walk to the PSD so hopefully they are that stubborn again and we get him for free.

Speaking of stubborn, I see the Blues waiting until the very last second, when we are on the clock about to bid on Dean before they accept a pick swap. Up until then they can rightly just try and call our bluff.
Carlton don't need to trade the pick unless someone bids. And they don't know when that is coming. I don't think we bid on Dean anyway. I expect that bid to come from Essendon.

If we or Richmond don't bid then Carlton will be worse off taking our 'points' offer because their pushed back R1 pick might go beyond an Ison bid. They would rather take a pick before Ison so keep 9,11 is better than 11,13. If we want pick 9 Carlton need to be convinced on a Dean bid earlier than Essendon (or trade when the bid occurs if you can do that).

Probably just got Fraser covered, though if he doesn't really take his chances could end on a similar path.
He has shown glimpses of real talent but he needs to put it together, needs a more ruthless edge to his game!

You’re probably right there.
I wonder if things don’t fall our way with getting a midfielder with our 3rd pick, whether we’ll target Fred or Swadling with a later pick.

Everyone is talking about 9 but 11 would be a better pick for Carlton to trade as that will be the pick affected. I'm sure their board is going to have several trades lined up for when that bid comes.

I feel we'll just let Williams go and take Banfield and Evans instead.

Reckon Evans would be a first rounder if he wasn't injured.

I have my doubts about Jack's athleticism (although like him) but I am not sure him being out of favour with Mini last year means he will be this year. Last year he looked unfit and still had baby fat. Maybe the issue was simply that Mini didn't think he was fit enough. This year he seems to have come back leaner and he could well be back in favour again after being asked to work on that/realising he needed to.

We will see I guess.
