Matthew Clarke on Gettable 17/11

Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

No he doesn't. If he had talent the tolerance for his attitude and behaviour would be much higher.
Don’t agree there. Positions himself well, good interceptor and an exceptional kick. Needed to develop his actual defending but IF he had the right attitude to get better he’d be a very handy player to break lines and counter attack. His kick ins would also mean having to have territory defended to the centre of the ground.

Idk where you’ve gotten mixed up, Essendon have clearly contacted us to move up, they’ve said as much.

Have they?

Clarke said nobody's contacted us whatsoever.

If we trade 2 and 13 for 5 and 6 I expect the draft to be.

1. Duursma
2. CDT
3. Sharp/Cumming/Robey
4. X.Taylor/Grilj

Which would leave 2 of Sharp/Cumming/Robey for us to grab.

Richmond aren't picking Taylor. They already have Trainor, who plays very similar.

I can see Essendon going for him though.

Yet Rosa said Essendon have contacted both West Coast and Richmond.

Who’s lying?
Well, we know about WCE's issues with emails these days. Probably should make a call instead.

Perhaps Clarke meant nobody's come forth with an offer. I'd have to listen to his interview again.

Doesn't sound like we have much interest in trading anyway.

Was too slow to guard a door stop, you'd be asking the impossible.

I think Essendon were more likely to trade up with us had they traded Merrett, now I dont think it happens.

Would rather we take Duursma and CDT tho. Duursma is the best player that's available to us. CDT is a promising project player.
So duursma is a utility who will start on the wing. CDT a project player you say with pick 2!!!

We have the first 2 picks in the draft and we don't take the one position we are the worst in the comp for....righteo then.

**** this CDT talk. We have ****ing needs and a project player is not a need. **** me dead I swear if we pick CDT I am going to spam bomb this ****in thread for weeks.

Who are the gun mids that we should be taking instead?

I’d be happy with either Sharp, Robey or Cumming at pick 2, assuming we keep it.

There are good arguments for each.

Robey has the most upside, given his size and rapid development, but his lack of exposed form poses a risk. With that being said, you don’t collect 40 touches and kick 3 goals in a game at CTL level without being a legitimate talent.

Sharp is the most proven, suits our needs the best and I suspect has the best intangibles. But his level of athleticism and scope for improvement is a concern, particularly with the way that Mini seems to want to play.

Cumming might be a happy middle ground. More athletic than Sharp but more proven than Robey. However, his profile is reasonably similar to Reid and Hewett and his form this year (outside of an excellent SANFL seniors game) has been a bit below expectations.

I’m not as down on CDT as others but I don’t want to draft him. My biggest concern with him is that if we take him, why on earth did we bother drafting and pumping games into Archer Reid?

This is based on the Essendon 5,6 + F2 for our 2,13 + F3.
Hope I have got the list numbers/changes right?

Dovaston is probably available in the teens right?. Not sure trading up is of much benefit as could likely get both those first rounders at 2 and 13

100% agree, baffling doesn't even begin to describe it.

You could be right. I reckon both options, keeping or trading picks, have their merits.
I was mainly just trying to map out how things might look based on the trade proposal with the Dons that others have been tossing around.

From what’s been said though, it doesn’t sound like Dovatson is any real chance of sliding to our pick at 13. I think you’re probably looking more at players like Farrow, Greeves or NHH in that range and to be honest, none of them really grab me as much.

If we went down this route, I could see our options unfolding something like this:
  1. Duursma (WCE)
  2. Uwland (GC) - West Coast/Essendon bid
  3. Patterson (GC) - Essendon bid
  4. CDT (ESS)
  5. Annable (BRIS) - Richmond bid
  6. Robey (RICH)
  7. Grijl (RICH)
  8. Sharp (WCE)
  9. Dovatson / Cumming / Lindsay / Taylor / Schubert (WCE)
The reason I’ve got us taking Dovatson in this scenario is that with Reid, Hewett, Sharp and Duursma, we’d already have a strong mix of mids who can push forward, so Cumming becomes less of a need. Curtin looks like a great tall option a bit later on, so I wouldn’t go for Schubert here. Meanwhile, Lindsay and Taylor are defensive types, and that’s probably the area we’re already best stocked in with Hough, Starcevich, Ginbey, McCarthy and Kenh (next year) shaping as our future DEF core.

Honestly, if we somehow landed Duursma, Sharp, Dovatson, Curtin, plus Williams and Banfield, that’d be one of our best-ever draft hauls in my opinion.
