Rookie Me Central 2025 Draft Guide

Matthew Clarke on Gettable 17/11

Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

Every professional draft ranking I’ve seen except one (ESPN) has him in the top 2 (in the open draft) and has done so for months.
So, what is he?

What do all the draft rankings say he is?

6 months ago, he was a unicorn ruckman.

Now, none of them see him as a ruckman BC of 3 issues everyone discovered in the back end of the year.

He isn't that tall at 199/200
He cant jump.
His ruck craft was ordinary at best, beaten by a number of his peers this year.

Now he is considered and Key forward who can pinch hit in the ruck.

This is not a need for us. We have forwards who pinch hit in the ruck coming out of every orifice.

We need mids.

So we have another 4 weeks of this, how many times can a handful of players be discussed over an over, forensically dissected and analysed in minute detail, it's fascinating...

And who is he? Who is his comp?

He's not a ruck. Don't try compare him to Luke Jackson.

He's certainly not a Thiltorpe type so pass on that.

Is he Blicavs? Is that worth a number 2 pick?

According to the people who do this for a living, th clear view is yes he is worth a top two pick (in the open pool).

That’s actually a reasonable summary of each club’s draft position including their thoughts on West Coast

We’re either doing a stellar job of disguising our interest in Sharp or are actually genuinely not interested in him

It’s also possible the media have their blinkers on in relation to Duursma and CDT being the best two players in the open pool so can’t see past the two Victorians

I'd love to see a journo do the slightest bit of proper analysis and discuss the issue with us selecting Duursma and CDT given the biggest issue on our list being the midfield, contested ball and ground ball.

This.

Just doesn’t seem to happen although I will say Mark Duffield had said a couple of times on his show that Sharp should be a consideration for West Coast

You all need to go back and watch Benji Van Rooyen ruck in the last three weeks of the Colts Finals to see what an actual good junior ruck can do at stoppages.
This is the thing. If we want to draft a good ruck we wait for two gun WA prospects coming in the next two years and take one of them. Not a pretend ruck in CDT that will end up being unable to play there.

There’s a reason no one is doing this.

You don’t use top 2 picks in the draft to address needs.

You use top 2 (I’d say top 10 minimum) to improve talent, and should pick based on order of best available, not what position they play.

That’s why.

Seems to be a bit of: Eagles have the first two picks + we (the Vic media) see Duursma and CDT as the best two prospects = Eagles love Duursma and CDT and will draft them. Just lazy analysis.

I hope there is more to it from our recruiter POV but just would be interesting to see it discussed on one of of the 73 weekly panel shows that the AFL do.

When you have 1 pick at the top sure.

Does anybody know who if Gold Coast Suns have any gun academy kids in 2026 that will potentially make the grade? Just thinking of GCS points available and deficit. They can't select them all if they have to pay fair market value?

All the professional draft rankings have him 2 and yet not a single one says where he will play at the next level. Not only that but they always overrate victorian talent and underrate non victorian. Then there's also the fact he's a "project", meaning if he takes a while to get going and doesn't get plenty of games while we also languish at the bottom of the ladder there's a more than good chance he will bail back to Victoria at the first chance.

Show me a conspiracy theorist with a tinfoil hat who thinks he knows better than blokes who have been doing this for a living for years and I’ll show you happy Mastenator
Cool. But again. Who is his comp.

Rookie Me

Cooper Duff-Tytler

Calder Cannons| Ruck Forward
height:200cm
D.O.B:22-08-2007
TOP TALL TALENT
Coming into the year those at Calder said they might have the number one pick in their ranks, and that’s exactly the conversation Duff-Tytler remains in. The 200cm prospect is as exciting as talls come with his unique ability to impact in open play and roam the ground like a fourth midfielder. Also a highly touted junior basketballer, Duff-Tytler declared his allegiance to the footballing pathway last year and has not looked back since, following through on the potential observed by all coaches, recruiters, and fans alike. He still has development left in his ruck craft (he can't jump that isn't changing so that's not improving to AFL level - he'd need to bulk up to be competitive which would see him lose his spread), but the 18-year-old beats all-comers on the spread and has shown exponential growth as a key forward (has he? He kicked 3 goals in the VFL game, none from big pack marks, or overhead marks). His ability to stuff the stat sheet has been evident at Coates Talent League level over the last two seasons and while he didn’t quite translate that onto the representative stage (so he did it at CTL where his athlteticism sets him apart, but when went up it didn't translate because he can't overwhelm with athleticim, which doesn't bode well against AFL level athletes), he finished the year strongly back at Calder (of course, so back at the lower level he shows up again). He was usurped for pole position last month but remains among the top echelon.

Archie Hill is probably their best Academy prospect at present.
Unsure of any other more highly rated kids coming in behind him next year.

Pick 1. Duursma.
Pick 2. Sharp
Pick 13. Cummings, Dovaston or NHH.
Pick 34. Williams Bid Match
Pick 53. Banfield

Evans CatB
Pick 1 RD: Blake Kelly

Big cohort of runners and ball winners. No talls.
If our biggest requirement to play the modern game is speedy midfielders then surely Banfield should be picked before Williams. Is Williams capable of filling that requirement. Which of the two would be ready to play in 2026 ?
