I hope Chris25 is right about Brady having a bit of Ballantyne about him because I believe we need a Ballantyne type who can play midfield in the side. (Bit disappointed that Balla couldn't make it work). If true am very happy with the selection.

Hey guys just dropping in for a question would you have picked up McCarthey with your first pick ? if so i would be so pissed at GWS, why the hell would they need another forward with what they have ? seems stupid to me. who knows he may get longer syndrome and run home to mummy . for a cut price

good luck ahead lads

Chris25 I know I've banged on a lot about Cam Giles - but individuals aside could it be said Freo were a little negligent grabbing another forward with our second pick given we have sufficient stock ( Griff, Gumby, Tabs, Hannath, Keplar, Apeness etc plus rotating tall mids) ?

When I open the pantry door labelled 'defenders' I don't really see anything other than Tanner Smith.....it just doesn't make sense to me given we have an ageing Lukey Mac who'll ( cross fingers) be lucky to run out 3/4's of 2014 and MJ who's form is prime but age bracket is high.
If we had a couple of injuries simultaneously to our KPD's what do we do - throw Keps back again ????

We've had Duffield and Ibbo playing tall at times, and it works only due to our pressure up the ground - but against quality teams and talls they get slaughtered one-on-one...

Interesting thing for me (since I'm not that knowledgeable on the draftees) Is that Pearce has massive endurance. Certainly been something we've been placing a lot of emphasis on since Lyon got here.

Chris25, could you see Pearce as a Nic Riewoldt-type roaming forward?

T
his is the sort of case where picking best available becomes ridiculous. We assume we would have taken McCarthy but Freo were very keen on Apeness because they think he is ready to go and is one of the best contested marks in the draft. Best for Freo supporters that McCarthy was taken before our pick because it would have gotten very interesting around here if we had have chosen Apeness instead of him:eek:

Brissy stocking up on defenders

IMO Brissy did the best out of all the clubs (collingwood included) - Aish, Gardiner, McStay, Taylor, Robertson. Not bad, Brisbane.

Not sold on Pearce. Although I'll trust the big footy communities enthusiasm as in reality I've only seen his highlights. Not really fair to judge him on that.

I just want GWS to be ground into the dirt game after game after game.

They will instead be ground into the dirt at the trade table over the next few years.

There is no way they will keep Cameron, Patton, Boyd, McCarthy, Davis, Thomlinson, Jacksh, Stewart, Corr, Plowman, Frost together. McCarthy will be played down back IMO at GWS.

Marsh has always played as a mid or at the back. Only became a forward when he got to colts.

I have a feeling that Geelong may have snapped up McCarthy with pick 16 ahead of us. I feel sorry for Macca being picked by GWS as I doubt he will get game ahead of Cameron, Patton or Boyd. Will be ripe for the picking in three years time when he comes home to Freo.

GWS know that they will lose some players, they've stockpiled forward talent that they can trade in the future. This is surely the forward thinking they've done (no pun intended).

BigFooty servers suck! I'll offer some more thoughts in the next day or so.

But, I do like what we did - even if I did rate others higher. In Apeness we have a strong contested mark (elite for his age) and a real presence up forward (not just a body, like say a resting ruckman). That's where he differs from Taberner and Gumbleton. And he is a key forward first and foremost, not a ruckman. Had he played at full forward and not in the ruck at the Championships, then I probably would have rated him much higher - as I did earlier in the season. But that's what happens when you're bigger than everyone else on the ground, you're forced to go into the middle.

Whereas had we got McCarthy instead, then we wouldn't really have been any better off for next year. And in the end, we got that athletic project tall in Pearce anyway. I'm sure this was Plan B (no denying that), but Apeness wouldn't have been available at our second pick and nobody else picked up is truly physically ready like him.

As for Marsh, my rating may have been slightly misleading as to his draft position. It was always going to be pick 30+ at the earliest, although I did think he'd get a shot earlier than what he did in the end. The other thing, is that he is just as much of a project as Pearce - only with even more question marks over him. I do think he'll be a good player, but I'm not too bothered in selecting Grey over him considering our first two picks.

Thank you kindly for the writeup Chris25, the bolded is very true. At Freo it's pretty much guaranteed he won't need to focus on ruckwork again.

Not completely shocked to find Pearce is indigenous, that last bit of play in the vid where he handballed to himself struck me as very Michael Johnson like. Kicking looks pretty shabby though.

Perhaps we would have taken McCarthy as the project tall and gone for a more developed tall with the 2nd. Regardless of how we got them I am pretty happy with that combination, and a very clear emphasis on marking and running.

With Clarke unable to establish his forward credentials there is a door open. Hannath may be feeling some competition. There is certainly a lot of tall timber around, with more to come next year down back.
