Looking at Quayle's draft, I would f*cking spew if Acres go through to Gold Coast at pick 20. As if they haven't poached enough elite WA midfield talent over the last few years.

Just cancelled a customer meeting realising it clashed with the draft #priorities

Your avatar would not be impressed. If you want that holiday at the Tuscan villa you've gotta take a call when it comes in on a mother****ing Thursday!

I can see Sheed and McCathy slidding into the teens and that will push ACRES back futher but I think he may not get pass St kilda

So who do you think we'll take then? If they're available, I just can't see us not taking one of them. Then again, I've been wrong in several drafts, so my judgement, admittedly, isn't the best.

I just think that the media get it wrong frequently. Once you get past the first 5 - 10 picks, it's very difficult to guess who will get chosen. No-one thought we'd pick Fyfe at 20. No-one had us taking Pitt at 20. No-one had us taking Crozier or Sheridan.

I've no idea who we'll pick. I'm just saying we're no more likely to take Acres or McCarthy than we are any other kid who is rated top 30.

I predict we'll take the kid who our recruiters rate as the 17th best kid in the draft.

Come the draft we are all experts and the selectors are the ones that make the mistakes.

Yep. I'm happy to trust our recruiting team ahead of BigFooty or the Worst. Mind you, it's a good thing I'm not a StKilda or Melbourne supporter - they must shit their daks this time of year.

Unless someone they rate as a top 10 or 15 draft pick slides to them?

Thanks to the lads doing so well Freo don't get those early gun picks. Lucky for Freo we are able to bat deep into the draft like we did with the Neale, Sutty, Spurr (RD) and Clancee (RD). If Saints and Melb get it wrong they will have dug and even bigger hole. :D

That's bullshit if true. All other things being equal, we should always go for the local kid. It's potentially worth a hundred grand in salary cap space later down the track.

Agree with this completely. Lloyd is on record as saying that they simply pick the best available and state of origin only comes into it when there's nothing else to differentiate two players. But in my view, not only is the local kid is less likely to want to go home, but he'll have much less external stress to deal with in his first year or so at the club.

There are potentially more distractions for a local staying in his home state.

Well that's all good, but come contract negotiation time there are potentially more distractions for an interstater.

Never mind our record in drafting locals is a lot better. Which should really be expected, you'd think we'd know more about the kid down the road than the one on the other side of the country. Likewise, other clubs would know a lot more about their local kids than WA kids. It's our competitive advantage.

Over the past three years I can't help but feel that clubs are more dogmatic about trading and seem to want to rip each other off in each transaction.

I wonder if that undermines the old philosophy of drafting the most talented guys and then trading to suit team make up?

Hopefully we'll get lucky and McCarthy and Acres will both be available at our first.

Imagine the cataclysm if we took Acres over McCarthy.

The reality is, I wouldn't be too shocked if it happened... and from what I've seen and heard of Acres... I wouldn't be at all bothered either.

EDIT: Really should read the whole thread before replying but... meh

It depends on how confident the club is in Taberner and Gumbelton really, if they think they will both be best 22 into the future the need for a tall forward is much lower.

What if he's an e'girls supporter. I hear some of them haven't flipped yet.

Hi, guys! In honor of the draft and the potential fall out once our first pick is announced and it's another half back flanker.... Let us all remember:

For once I'm not expecting a flanker as Bond explicitly said this time we were going needs based.

Yes, I'm setting myself up for a big fall.

Yeah, maybe. Who knows if Michael Walters might be 2 years ahead of where he is now had he not had mates feeding him KFC and Corona. But, on the other hand, he might never had made it where he is without the support of hi Swan Districts "family".

A couple of years ago, I was in Melbourne with a mate who had a family friend who had been drafted to a Melbourne team the previous year. We met up with the young rookie and sat with him while we watched a game of footy. He said he was loving playing footy for a living, but he was finding it a very isolating and lonely experience. He had no family in Melbourne, and whilst he made a few good friends at the club, he wasn't able to do a lot of the normal partying type of things a 19 year old would be doing to meet friends in a new city. He basically went from having hundreds of friends and all of his family in Perth, to no family and a very small group of friends in a big city. He wasn't complaining, he was happy with his choice to play footy. But, from my perspective, it really made me appreciate the whole "homesickness" thing and it made me wonder if you can actually get the best out of a young athlete while he's suffering some minor form of depression.
