Maybe we have the same mindset as Gws. Just pick the best available kpp. The best players in juniors usually play midfield or forward tbh. Looking at the draft, Giles, Aliir and McStay are the only defenders that won't massively struggle with height at afl level. Must admit I wanted Giles with our second pick but apparently he very much lacks in defensive qualities. Aliir well I would've been disappointed using 58 on him, way too raw for a senior listed player and again lacks defensive qualities.
I like the look of Matthew Sully however but he's still there. Let's hope we get him in the rookie draft and Frawley/Reid next year.
Was It Grey that Fox footy didnt even have a position for? Where does he mainly play?

Senior list outs (6): Crichton, Mello, Michie, Pitt, Forster, Faulks Senior list ins (6): Silvia, Gumby, Taberner, Apeness, Pearce, Gray Is this right? Because for some reason I seem to think we still may have one extra spot senior list available to grab someone in the PSD? Did anyone else get delisted, retire, traded?
We didn't pass on anyone, so no PSD pick this year.
We definitely have 40 on the senior list now so no one is coming via the PSD.
It's all rookies from now on to add with Moller and Menegola.
Good to see the board didn't go Ape yesterday over our selections...
I know we needed one more ape pun, but go back and read the page from when GWS selected McCarthy.

Hey Mich, wanted talls and got talls. Would have liked McCarthy but the Giants pounced so got Apeness instead. Don't expect Freo's picks to have an impact next year but helps strengthen the key-position stocks long-term.12:25 PM

Such an even draft, he might have been, One clubn told me they rated McCarthy the 11th best player in draft. Another had him in the 20s of talented kids. Giants must have seen him as the best, Mark. Giants by name, Giants by nature with Boyd, McCarth and Lobb.

Saw Sos say after the draft they wanted to bring some balance to their list so that's why they picked up McC.. what a moron, they are going to ruin the kids career for no tangible gain. Playing three key talls up front will work with what should be a dominant midfield, but they can't play four. I wonder if they were more interested in denying other clubs kpfs? I think its a clear sign that the concessions were too much.
Anyway after my initial disappointment at the stupidity of GWS Im feeling good about picking up Gorilla. Athletic for his size and if he is as good a mark as they say he could genuinely end up the best forward of the draft, especially with Lyon teaching him what a work rate is and with Pav being there to teach him the position. I think in a couple of years McC will be looking for more opportunity and being a freo supporter its only natural..

I get that feeling too. You know you've been given waaaay too many concessions when you can afford to use top 20 picks like pawns in a game of chess.

Look back a few years and we had Forster and Neale. Two young blokes from the middle of nowhere come to us. This year two good friends from Tasmania in Grey and Pearce. Tassie to Perth is a long way (Freo would know!) and it's good to see player welfare play a role in recruiting players. On the proviso they are both good enough, if having at least one guy you know helps a young fella settle in to a new club I think it's a great move. Welcome aboard Apeness, Pearce and Grey.

Jeez whoever wrote that article is a total dickhead. "It was a move that stank of desperation", yeah ok geniuses. However, if we were to pick a non-tall at pick 17 what's the bet the same guys would've said something like "Fremantle are desperate for a key forward, so it is baffling as to why they did not select the third-best tall forward in Michael Apeness".

I'll back our recruiters - "we thought he was the best contested mark in the draft" - against the wackers who wrote that article. Since when has taking the "3rd best tall" in a draft at #17 been a failure ... FFS!
Pretty much. Someone suggested they took him because Sydney were rumoured to be into him, imagine the luxury of being able to use a top 20 pick for nothing other than spite!
