There's a thread for which players people think we will trade vs keep. What got me thinking though is that the club never goes for players that we (as supporters) want or expect - and there's a gap between who we rate as talent and who the club does.

Not that they have put too many feet wrong - Blakely, Tucker, Balic, Weller, Langdon, and friends are all proving quite inspired.

So - I think it needs a name. Freo's Law. Anything that a supporter wants the club to do, the club will do the unexpected.

Given the number of people that want SPS at pick 3 - Freo's Law would suggest that the club will trade down pick 3 instead. Either to 2 first round picks with GWS or GC, or converted to a first round + player. With our lower first pick in the draft, a player we all rate will slide to our pick (such as English for example) and we'll take someone nobody has discussed - such as a Will Hayward, San Walker, Alex Villis, or Jarrod Berry.

What is your prediction for our trade activity, and the most outlandish thing you think Freo will do.

Sign D.Pearce for two more years :'(

Trade Barlow for something around 30-35. That pick + SOS to brissy for their end of first round priority pick - allows flexibility for a Hogan deal or go to draft and hope for Logue

Mayne compo pick and Barlow trade for a pick then use both picks for a upgrade in draft order.

Mayne's compo pick is going to Hawthorn for Brad Hill.

Predictions

In - B. Hill, McCarthy, Kersten (possibly Conca in a trade involving Suban)
Out - Barlow, Ballas, Mayne, Clarke?

Draft - If GWS get #1 and take McGrath, then - #3 Will Brodie. If GWS don't get it, then either McGrath or Brodie.

Whilst also leaving us massively depleted down back.

A.Pearce is still no certainty for round 1, will have a late start to preseason.

Brodie at #3 is a big call - will be interesting to see what happens, I do think we might shift around pick #3 to create value elsewhere

Mayne compo + Barlow compo for a pick upgrade I can see happening, if we don't use Mayne for Hill.

Our 3rd round pick and Ballas for eagles 2nd and 3rd pick.

Eagles 2nd round pick to hawks for hill.

Mayne 2nd round compo.

Clarke 3rd round compo.

Barlow for a 3rd round pick.

Kersten for a late pick.

Mccarthy for .......

Pick 3 will be someone with skills and speed, SPS fits the bill but I think we could get him with pick 6 or 8

Depending on how they value his upside, they may reach that far. Will be an interesting first pick for us.

1. Mayne compo for B Hill
2. 2017 Second round pick for McCarthy
3. Ballatyne plus pick 39 for Eagles picks 30 and 48
4. Barlow for Kersten (I HOPE I AM WRONG)
5. Suban for Conca (I HOPE I AM WRONG)
6. SOS and pick 75 for Lions pick 56
7. De Boer to the Blues for nothing
8. Z Clarke to stay
9. Pick 3 on McCluggage
10. Hogan stays at Melbourne

I have McCluggage, McGrath and SPS as the top 3 for our club draft board - I don't see any other draftees being better options than these three personally. It's looking more likely Hugh and Andrew will go picks 1 & 2, which leaves us SPS. If they don't go 1 & 2 then I think we weigh up between the 3. I'd be very happy with any of them.

Other pick 3 options and reasons I don't think they are better than those 3:
  • Ainsworth - worthy of top 5, I just think the three above have qualities more valuable for our current list.
  • Brodie - also in top 5 but I think we need class more than another big bodied mid.
  • English - could become amazing but too high a risk for us and will take too long imo. His ruck work is over-rated which is the main reason we would be considering him.
  • Marshall - potentially a good primary key forward but nothing to suggest he'll be a gun yet. Too inconsistent imo.
  • Taranto - doesn't work hard enough defensively and plenty are calling him a bit of a seagull. We already have two good medium forward finishers in Bennell and Yarran that we can look forward to seeing. I think Balic has far more upside as a future inside mid than Taranto as well.
  • Bowes - we might bid on him but it will be matched.
  • Setterfield or Perryman - again we could bid but will certainly be matched.

SOS has played 14 games in the past 3 years. Unfortunately it's been a case of the wrong place at the wrong time for SOS. He's played some good footy the last month and that's got Brissy's attention - I say it's a win-win to trade him out if we can. Hopefully he can play 14+ games in 2017, he deserves that chance.

I'm keen for him to stay, but I wouldn't blame him for leaving. SOS has shown loyalty to us, could of left for regular games, instead he played at Peel. He deserves better, shame it's Brisbane though, you really earn your money as a lions defender.

Not totally serious. But this thread isn't about guessing what will actually happen.

I'ld love us to try to upgrade Mayne or Barlow pick to get Brissy's 19 for additional flexibility this trade period or next (Hogan/Lobb).

Agreed, it seems Mayne compo for hill is being talked about a lot, but that could be Logue - exactly what Hawks (and Freo) need. A versatile KPD. We could regret such a trade whilst Hawks laugh all the way to the bank! Hope we can get Hill for a late 2nd round instead.

So much focus on who to draft with pick 3. We'll likely draft 4-5 players this year. Savvy trading back into the 2nd round would be huge for us. SPS v McGrath v Ainsworth is almost splitting hairs - they'll all be good.

Outlandish pick: Jy Simpkin and his broken leg to slide to one of our picks. Can join our gang of cripples ready to impact 2017

SPS doesn't have speed but Shae Bolton has speed and elite kicking and has good hands.

You missed Shae Bolton who has speed and good foot and hand skills

No one's talking about him being a top 10 pick but as we all know, that means nothing really. We're still a long way out from the draft and things will change between now and then on these boards and even then the draft won't go as planned by BF.

Yeah I'd love Shai but if we are trading in Brad Hill then I don't see the point of going after another attacking outside mid. I think he's possibly worth a top 10 pick but he's not pick 3 worthy imo. If he could be like Andrew McGrath off half back I'd consider it. I know a few on the West Coast board are keen on him for pick #12 but I don't think they really need another outside mid either given their Jetta pick up last year.

Quite a few people have stated that Alex will be starting preseason early to catch up on his fitness. Have you heard otherwise or just speculating?
He is training now - already had a break when still on crutches. Will resume running shortly and be very surprised if he's not playing round 1.
