As far as I'm concerned, we need to add another ruckman to our list. Wight is not, not, NOT a ruckman. That leaves us ONLY Street, Minson, and Skipper. Obviously we need to draft a young ruckman in this draft and start developing him (this need should have been addressed several years ago). But besides drafting a young ruckman, we need another. I highly doubt the ruckman we pick up in the draft will be ready to play for a year or two at least, so we shouldn't even count that player as backup. Three ruckmen on the list is simply not enough, especially considering the err, dearth of talent in the three of them. For backup and competition, we desperately need to add another seasoned, AFL-ready performer. In recent years players like Ackland, Knobel, and Bryan have entered the draft and PSD, and althought the work 'hacks' comes to mind, I am so adament that we need backup that I would (regrettably) consider drafting/trading for someone of the 'ilk' of the aforementioned players. Even though they're crap.

Therefore, trading for someone like Meeson, who may well come good and may well be another hack, sounds like a much better plan to bolster our stocks than picking up leftovers.

Any other plans to get a ruckman?

On another thought, will we promote both Hughes and Harbrow?

I'd think so... but what about Pask?

To be honest, KPP defenders - for so long our weakness - is an area we're actually looking o.k. in at the moment... Harris, Wight, Williams, McDougal, Hargs and Morris. Maybe this will hurt Pask's chances? I'd at least like to see him retained on the Rookie List.

I agree with everything you say. But just on addressing this issue 2 years ago thing. We were developing or had more then enough ruckman. Skipper, Wight, Minson were in the 'developing group' and still are... and Street and Darcy were planning to hold up the fort. I can't see how they thought they even needed another ruckman. A maximum of 2 ruckman can be played in a game, no point in having 6 ruckman on our list if we had of drafted for another 'developing ruckman'. Plus, one could argue if we had 4 of our 5 ruckman go down McDougall could potentially pinch hit if a tsunami hit Whitten oval. Just because none of them were as good as Dean Cox or....well umm..who else is a dominate ruckman, McIntosh? Doesn't mean we have to fill our list looking for one.

What if there are no decent up and coming ruckman in this years draft? I know there is bound to be a couple of ruckman in the draft, but don't just get them for the sake of it, otherwise in 5 years time we will be saying 'they should have addressed this issue years ago' when he doesn't kick on like we expected. Much like how Minson should have improved more as should have Skipper, Wight should have put on more weight and Street should have learnt to cover more ground.

(and we expected Darcy to go on for at least another year)

I seriously think that the Doggies should pick up Lance Whitnall and play him as a forward.

You can pick him up for nothing in the PSD.

After last weeks games i'd take him on a 2 year contract if we got him in the PSD. He looked good, and our forward line...well what forward line? Our backman Gilbee kicked the most goals...thats interesting place to play your full forward. Granted no team would know what hit them.

But it would be really showing our desperation if picked up Lance.

But what other options do we have?

Its's not like we are going to be offered a J.Brown or Pavlich in our search for a power forward. Your list of recycled players, while amusing is on the mark. There is a lot of garbage out there at the moment, we have to sift through that and hopefully find a player who can be succeesful at our club. If Lance is the best out there then we have to try and get him, not saying he is the best, but he is one option.

No its not the only problem. But it isn't a strength.

Yeah agree, but for piss weak journalists who watch us twice a year and blame our lack of tall forwards as the reason we have gone backwards. If you watched the team on a consistent basis, like many on this board you would quickly learn that we need more than just some tall forwards to become a better team, although it would help.

Rant over...

People here talk McMahon down here because in the second half of this year his kicking has been down. At the start of the season he was in our top five players to only finish in bottom 22. He is a fast running half back which a lot of teams would love to have. Granted he wants to go back does not diminish his value in my eye's. I think if he was in the draft he would be a first round draft pick. Personally I want the dogs to go down the Hawthorn road and swap players for picks and use those picks to build a side that will be strong for a ten year period not trying to bolster a weakness with hack s that other teams think will not make it. North have learnt that it does not work and have changed there strategy. Westcoast are great example of swapping hacks for picks and getting better players for it.
To answer that question I don't want anyone from the crows just picks.

our first round pick, plus crows first round pick (traded for macmahon), to get Charman or Fev?

So if Carlton lose this week they would have draft picks 1,4,5,9 or there abouts in a draft where supposedly only the first 8 or 10 picks are quality if we went down this path. Good for Carlton, not so the rest of the comp.

I think we really need to off load some of our non-performing players rather than draft picks if we want to try and persuade a quality player to join our club. We should all things be equal (Walsh excluded) be able to get a very good player with our first draft pick (4 or 5), I think it would be a big mistake to get rid of this draft pick unless Clayton is convinced that this pick would not get us a player we require. Having a look at our list we are thin everywhere so I can't see Clayton taking this path.

If we lose on Sunday we will have Picks #1 and #3.

Therefore: 1 , 3, 5, 9

how many picks carlton has isnt important. whats important is we dont have a decent tall forward or ruck and we dont look like developing one any time soon.

trading three hacks wont get you a superstar. if you want to get a quality player to the club you are going to have to give up juicy draftpicks and/or a quality player in return. which underperfoming players were you thinking of, if not macmahon who wants to go home?

I have stated in previous threads that we have about 5 to 8 recognised players on our list that I would not trade, the rest are up for grabs. I haven't included the draftees from 06, I would be keeping all of them.

Off the top of my head the players I would not consider trading are:

Griffen, Gilbee, Cooney, Higgins, Williams, Murphy, Harris??

Take your pick from the rest. And from the rest I will not be giving them up for nothing. If Carlton want Cross then it's a straight swap for Fevola, perhaps we might ask for a bit more, but hopefully you catch my drift.

having a mercenary attitue like that will create more trouble down the line. plus robbing our midfield of one of our best players isnt going to help our cause much either. its just unrealistic and it wont and shouldnt happen.

Cross is untradable. He is an absolute gun. Sure he had a pretty bad year, but it was all to do with his knee injury.

Cross and Boyd will be the grunt of our midfield in a few years time.

Cross has had an awesome year. Will still finish top 5 in B&F and he missed about 8 games.

Your right, it was hard for me to recall those early games. His year has just been marred by the knee injury and him struggling to find some form in the games since his return.

He will be back bigger and better next year.

How will it create trouble down the line. The Western Bulldogs Football Club for to long have been to happy to just to be apart of this competition. So what if our players are all good friends and they might get upset if someone rocks the boat. Do they play like mates?? Not a chance. We need a shake up, someone has to pay the price for our inept performances over the past 6 weeks.

What makes Cross one of our best midfielders? What makes him so special that he can't be replaced. Personally I really like Cross, he would be in my top 3 or 4 current favourite players, but he isn't exempt from my criticism, no-one is.

Draft ladder for National draft this year in my system.
Ladder is by Average of last 3 previous years.
Ladder positions at the end of round 22.

..................................................2005...... .....2006............2007(RD21).......AVG
Carlton......................................16............. ......16........... ......16.....................16
Essendon.................................13................. ...15.................12.....................13.3
Richmond.................................12................. ...9...................15.....................12
Brisbane Lions.......................11...................13......... .........10......................11.3
Western Bulldogs.................9....................8............. ........13......................10
Hawthorn..................................14................ ....11..................4.......................9.6
Melbourne...............................7................... .7.....................14.......................9.3
Collingwood............................15................... .5....................6.......................8.6
Fremantle ...............................10..................3........ .............11.......................8
Kangaroos..............................5.................... 14..................5..........................8
Port Adelaide........................8....................12..... ...............2........................7.3
StKilda......................................4.............. ......6....................9..........................6.3

Sydney.....................................3................ ....4.....................7..........................4.6
Adelaide.................................1.................. ..2.....................8...........................3.6
West Coast............................2....................1..... ................3...........................2

This is the draft ladder based on ladder finishes for those years. As you can see the teams with the worst list still end up on top of the draft. Essendon getting the second pick gives a truer indication of where that list is at. Priority picks are not needed in my opinion however if you like you could give the priority to the lowest average over the three years.

Carlton are getting a pre-first round priority round pick because they have been shit over 2 years. So it is sort of already like that, the other PP picks you get for winning less then 4 1/2 games are after the first round so pick 18 this year is the first PP for teams with crappy seasons.
