Re: Paul Hasleby anyone?

Didnt he just get dropped for not turning up to training or drinking during the season ? ? Or am i confused here...

No for mine. We need to develop our own inside players (Griffen, Cooney and Hahn to help Boyd, Cross and West) and look at drafting key position guys....

Re: Paul Hasleby anyone?

I want him. Assuming he can pass a medical test on his dodgy back.

The guy is awesome at clearance's/tackles and uncontested footy.....he's better then anything we have in this department..maybe minus West.

If we get him there is no room in our midfield for at least one of Cross, Boyd and West, maybe two. What happens with them?

Polak in the backline this season would not have made a difference?

You may have been furious this time last season, I don't think many would agree with you on this one now though.

Nup. Williams and Harris would have played ahead of him-its a myth that we struggle for tall defenders.

I'm used to having no support;)

Rotation. Rotation. Rotation.

On the weekend all these players played including Cooney. But we still had Giansiracusa and Eagleton and even MCMAHON! in the center bounces for large sections! Drop one of these guys. (plus Cross plays his best footy running in off the wing;))

Center would become Minson - West - Cooney - Hasleby. With Boyd starting on the bench. After 5 mins Cooney would come off and Boyd in. Every 5 mins one player out another in. The more the merrier and no more small bodies!

If you look back at our year how many tall forwards from the opposition took us to the cleaners? Not too many, perhaps Petrie for a qtr and Franklin last week (abit for bad kicking).

Our problem isn't our tall defenders anymore... We have new problems

You don't give away pick for 4 cheaply....

I think far too often what a club paid for a player comes into the equation what they believe his worth is.

Murphy is a developing KPP that was starved on opportunities due to Tarrant and Pavlich being in the side (Which is quite understandable).
The guy has shown he has ability (Unlike McDougal ever did while playing without having a Pavlich or Tarrant in the side), I don't believe he has shown any less than Ray.

Look all I am saying is...I don't want to have to this time next year tell you guys I told you so again ;)

So you say, but Murphy was taken at pick 12 way back in 2003. You call him a 'developing KPP', and talk him up like he has shown so much more at Freo than Mcdougall did at WC. He bagged a whopping 22 goals in 12 games in 2006. That's all he has done in 4 years on the list. Doogs kicked 35 in 21 for WC in 2004, without the benefit of anyone let alone Pavlich and co. drawing quality defenders away from him.

I don't exceptionally rate Ray, he is a runner like Matt Rosa, but Murphy is well and truly over-rated by Freo fans. He may well go on to be a good player, but he hasn't shown anything to date to suggest he's that good.

Have a look at how well Lynch has looked at the eagles.
With that kind of delivery and sheer weight of opportunities due to the midfielder dominating it makes average players look very good.

Pavlich alongside Murphy meant he was never looked for, always had to find his own ball. Add to the equation our poor midfield and you have one player desperately starved of opportunity that has shown more than most KPP players to appear since he was drafted.

Why would we want to play Cross on the wing, the bloke can't kick. The wingman's role is to run and carry, Cross's role is to win clearances and feed the receivers, and that has been a big problem this year.

I agree in parts with what you say, but our big problem I see at the minute is that our midfield is to alike with the exception of Cooney. West, Cross and to a lesser extent Boyd are all limited with there foot skills and leg speed. I honestly cant see our midfield improving by adding Haselby into the mix without getting rid of more than just a couple of the players who you mentioned.

Cross already does play on the wing(but not as a wingman). He runs in to the center after most bounces. They decided long ago this was a better way for Cross to play. Sure he moves in the center a bit. But thats just rotation.

Cross, Boyd, Cooney, West can all stay! I honestly believe Hase should be a target. I'm against trading in most cases.

So we play Cross really on the wing, but in effect as the 4th midfielder? How can that improve us? I know we do it a fair bit, West plays this role too. It just makes no sense to me.

Our midfield is crap because we get killed at the clearances, we get pushed out the way, we don't pick up an opponent and beacuse we can't chase and tackle an opponent one on one. How will Haselby improve this?? Maybe with the clearance, what about the rest.

Cooney must stay. If you add Haselby to the midfield rotation with the other 3 you would think that only 2 of thse 4 will be in the centre square at anyone time. The 'midfielder' off the wing doesn't work so it would mean that 2 of them would have to be on the bench as they can't play anywhere else, so much for flexibility...

I think the role of a wingman/flanker/running type is to assist in linking up play. This can be done in three main ways imo: great disposal, pace/ability to break lines and hard running. Cross is a master of the latter. His extremely hard running results in him being able to get a heap of uncontested disposals, offering a consistent link for team mates.

Do you even watch Eagles games? Go and watch WC vs St Kilda from Rd 21. Lynch kicked 5 because he is a good player. He goes and finds his own ball if it doesn't come to his leads inside 50.

Pavlich alongside Murphy meant he was never looked for, always had to find his own ball. Add to the equation our poor midfield and you have one player desperately starved of opportunity that has shown more than most KPP players to appear since he was drafted.

If you took Pavlich out of the Freo side, Murphy would struggle more than he does with Pavlich there. The poor midfield excuse is just that, an excuse. Brad Fisher has done alright this year, and Carlton are woeful all over the ground and have Fevola.

Murphy has shown less in his time in AFL football than Brent Staker. You are marking him too softly. Farren Ray is a first 22 player. He won't be simply traded away for a guy with potential.

Good point, but my counter arguement is that when Cross finds open space he freezes as for one he has no confidence in his foot skills and two has no confidence in his leg speed.

I like Cross dont get me wrong, I love his gut busting running to create an option, but to play this link role, well I just think he has to many weaknesses which stop him being successful.

The bolded sections are what I want from a wingman, the hard running should be a given...

Yeah that's a fair enough point but it's a bit chicken and the egg. I think he creates more chances through his hard running than he wastes through poor disposal.

You say the hard running should be a given. It's not just a good attitude thing with Crossy, he also has the ability to run hard.

The voice of wisdom, Scotland. By that logic, Ryan Murphy would be worth, ohh, a downgrade of 5 picks in the 30's and 7 picks in the 60's, which is precisely what we got McDougall for.

On another thread, we have put together a list of shithouse KPP's that opposition club supporters have offered as a lure of fools gold to the Bulldogs. Ryan Murphy should be added to that list. Those 22 goals he kicked in 2006 - he hardly kicked a behind from memory? Imagine if he did not kick straight. Wow, a KPP who kicked 12-15 goals for the season. Where do I sign

Ray has shown infinitely more than Ryan Murphy in his career to date. Anyone who disagrees with that doest not know their footy, plain and simple.

And another thing, we don't need a slender mark on a lead type of KPP, which is the only trick Ryan Murphy has. We need the bash and crash, mongrel, presence, body strength, contested marking kind.
