Re: Draft Idea's

I started a thread on the AFL board on idea's for a better draft system. One guy came up with this. It is a bit left field but I thought it was brilliant. No need to tank and all clubs get a fair crack over time in this system. What do Dogs supporters think of this system?

How the hell is that fair,we get pick 9,lol,we are crap, maybe good in a couple of years with the correct players.

Re: Drafts Thread

I dont rate Gaertner's kicking at all.

He and Partick Veszpremi trained with Carlton as part of the AIS program - and while Veszpremi's skills were sublime, his aerobic capacity wasn't great (as you would expect from a TAC kid training with an AFL outfit) - and Gaertner's kicking was woefull. Even in this years carnival he was constantly missing targets and floating his kicks.

Gaertner is also very very skinny.

Very interesting that Weaver would have Gaertner at 6. He'd be a 2nd/3rd Rounder IMHO.

FWIW I think Tom Collier would be a good fit for the Doggies - reminds me a lot of Andrejs Everitt, can never have enough "attacking" defenders.

Is that right well we won't pick these guys at pick 3,hopefully by 20 we get a defender and like i said with 36 take a shot with that full forward guy Notte as a development player as their really isn't that much interesting players in the 30-40.

Pick 4

Assuming melboune loose to carlton last round and we loose our last 2 games we will end up with pick 4. No doubt given clayton's record he will go for a midfielder probably thinks it safer than the last time he went for a tall at pick 4

Lose, not loose.

Henderson.

Re: Delist/Trade the following:

Do you guys have any rookies worth promoting?

Hows Minson gone in the VFL this year? I think Port could show some interest in him.

Harbrow is a rookie and I'd say is a certainty to be promoted. Other possibilities are Pask (ex Brissy Lions) who apparantley has been consistent at Werribee but a bit of a plodder and some of the guys here think that ex-Norwood man Gavin Hughes is worth a shot. Our other rookie Michael West after a 2nd knee reco in his v.short career (both knees now) is probaly gone.

Re: Delist/Trade the following:

Jordan McMahon - Soft. Clubs will be interested in him though.

Farren Ray - Annoys the hell out of me. I know he doesn't have a football b/ground and there is room for improvement, but his sloppy kicking skills hurt us too much, too often. He is not accountable enough. Thompson had 4 shots on goal against us today playing in the midfield, including the sealer. Clubs will be interested in Farren, particularly over in the West.

I love this kind of thinking. He is a dud but we should get a fair bit for him!

Anyone think he'd be worth getting?

Grima looked OK on the weekend. He has good size and is a decent kick. He is no sure thing to be a good player at the next level though.

Who, McMahon or Ray? Are you disagreeing with me and saying that there wouldn't be any interest whatsoever with these two??

These guys aren't duds. In a different team, say Sydney, McMahon in particular would shine. We just have too many of the same type.

Are we willing to pay the price to get a real foreward? Just think about
this - Grant and Darcy retire, Walsh only good enough for weeribee 2's,
Tiller is a 3rd tall not big enough for KPP, we have given up on McDougall
and decided we will make him into a defender, Baird - delist. How many
KPP forewards does that leave us on our entire list?
NIL NONE ZERO ZILCH ZIP.
To get an established KPP forget 1st round pick and skinny wing, hff or
hbf. Only 4 players on our list can get us a Fev,Kosi or Roughead (those
are the only ones that I thing might be gettable). Only Harris,Cooney,
Griff or Higgins will get us a KPP. No other way imo.
Are you willing to trade Cooney and Street for Kosi, or Cooney for Roughead, or Cooney fo Fev?
The only one I would consider would be a massive multi club multi
player trade that ends up with us getting Roughead, Cameron Wood
and Prismall. We would lose Cooney.Street,McMahon and Hahn.
Waddya reckon? Abusive comments gratefully accepted.

Ah no thanks. Not a big fan of Street would have to pay clubs to take him IMO. Cooney still could be anything. McMahon is bait. Hahn is a hard body and is required. But more importantly, Hawks ain't trading Roughead.

If we can land a quality big feller then i belive we should use at least 3-4 picks on talls including our first. Smalls can be picked up any time, any where; rookie list, late in the draft, whatever.

some people do live in fantasy land.

spring cleaning @ footscray!!

the doggies are desparate for a spring cleaning job. who needs to be dusted off the shelf completely and who needs to be put out in recycling?

i suggest that the following will start proceedings:

DELiSTINGS- Faulkner, Baird, McKormack, Welsh.

TRADE BAIT- McMahon needs to go home, same with Ray, Power.

goodbye Darcy, but the other three( Skipper, Minson and Street) all deserve to stay and although none are stars and probably never will be, the dogs have higher priorities eg; CHB,FF.

Leave Welsh alone he's a good player. For Adelaide.

Re: spring cleaning @ footscray!!

IMO Walsh is worth more to us then say Playfair or Leigh Brown or Charlie Gardiner would be. We have no idea if Walsh will make it in the AFL, we suspect he won't but we aren't 100%, but we do know for a fact the other guys won't be anything special. And every time Walsh plays he kicks goals.....He's kicked what 11 goals in 3 games this year? Not including the game he did his hammy. Who cares what league it is, proves he has natural talent. Play your first game in 18 months bag 5 goals then 2 goals a week later, do your hammy miss 3-4 weeks come back and kick 4...

exactly my point!! If you read my original post, I say that ray is soft, but he will definately have value to another club, such as Sydney...

Re: Delist/Trade the following:

No, it actually sounds psychotic.

What would happen if Street went down next year? We wouldn't have a legitimate ruckman on our list. Skipper is 193cm, hardly tall enough to be our main ruck for 4qrts and is only really a pinch hitter as it is. Minson is invaluable to us. The going rate for ruckman is inflated anyway, specially one of his age and the amount of games he has under his belt. Crazy maybe, psychotic? Spare me the hyperbole.

I cant believe Im saying this but guido and macmahon would have some currency at the trade table, and I reckon both would go on to have successful careers if traded.

power has no currency but has proven himself over the last month at least to be a capable tagger which means he is worth more to us than anyone else at the moment.

ray I would not trade. that would be like giving away the goose before it laid any golden eggs.

clayton has always taken the 'draft the best, trade the rest' philosphy. I think this season might be the time for the club to make good on that and trade some decent players of a type we can afford to loose for some decent players of a type we desperately need.
