Who were the big name pick ups at the recent premiership clubs?

Hawthorn: Burgoyne, Lake, Frawley. Ok

Sydney: ?????? Kennedy and Mumford weren't big name pick ups at the time.

Collingwood: Luke ball for pick 30? Any others? Swan, Pendles, Sidebottom, Beams, Cloke, Maxwell, Reid, Brown, Thomas, Harry O, Dawes, Davis, Didak, Shaw, Goldsack were all home grown

Geelong: Ottens in 2004. Who else? Ablett, Bartel, Corey, Chappy, Selwood, Scarlett, Enright, Egan, Taylor, Lonergan, Ling, Johnson, Stokes, Varcoe, Hawkins, Mackie, Hunt, Milburn were all home grown. Harley and Mooney effectively were too.

West Coast: Daniel Chick? Tyson Stenglein? Are they big names? Cousins, Judd, Kerr, Embley, Fletcher, Glass, Lynch, Wirripanda, Banfield, Cox, Hunter, Braun, Waters were all products of West Coast
Hawks have traded and have come off a 3 peat...pies in 10 traded for Jolley and Ball
There is a solid reason why clubs trade...who wouldn't want Danger Treloar et al

Drafts are really chook lotto most of the time...how many drafted players end up as duds...40-50%...?..

Collingwood has recruited mid fielder's to move swan into the forward line. Which seems to be very short sighted. Especially since a key forward outside of cloke remains their issue and they have moved on next year's pick for this year so trading one in my be problematic. Cloke is 28 and for some reason seems to be going backwards. I can't see their strategy at the moment. Getting treloar isn't addressing their key gaps. Although their mid field was a bit one way last year

By simply going to the draft every year, we will tread water.

I kinda agree.

Every other team also goes to the draft. Most get a 100+ game player with their Round 1 pick, so most teams stay at about the same level. So nailing your first pick just keeps you treading water. (Messing up your first pick leaves you sinking, ala Melbourne.)

You can make ground up on the other teams by nailing late picks, rookie picks, or landing the doozy. The free agent / trade route is not the only way.

The real trick in it all is getting players to accept less money than they would get elsewhere, whether they are coming in or already on the list.

6 with mental strength is needed it seems.

I think we have the 6 players. It's just that they don't have the mental strength. Yet.

Dunno if they ever will. I've been watching a fragile Richmond since people wore corduroy.

I think RFC supporters have started taking it for granted that you always nail your first round pick
Far too many duds in the 1st round of every draft for this theory to be true

Yep, it shouldn't be taken for granted. Can't believe Richmond has gotten to the point where we almost do just expect another 100+ game player to arrive with pick 12... So many disappointments, over the years. The track record speaks for itself:

CEllis
Lennon
Vlastuin
BEllis
Conca
Martin
Vickery
Cotchin
Riewoldt

Definitely not all stars, but all 100+ game players. It's a decade since Oakley-Nichols. The better teams do just nail it more years than not.

Doozy? Who said that?

We don't want 100 gamers They are a dime a dozen!!!. It is a diluted 18 team como remember. WE really need GF players not 100 gamers

I don't disagree. Not bad to start with 100+ game players though. No player is a GF player when they are drafted.

I thought it might be worth bumping this thread. Now that we look likely to pick up a player that somewhat resembles a doozy, what are everyone's thoughts?

Last year it was considered unacceptable that we missed out on Treloar (who would've demanded the picks for both Rioli and Prestia) and went to the draft. Now it's unacceptable that we aren't keeping our draft pick and are trading it for a gun player.

At the end of the day it comes down to price. Yes it's nice to get a doozy but not if you overpay. If you can acquire a gun with your first pick by all means go for it, but don't overpay. There will always be quality in the draft if opposition clubs aren't co-operating.

Judd grew up a Dees fan and they had picks 4 and 21 that year. I'm not convinced it will help us much.

Never say never, I hear you but I'm open to the possibility. I'm also not into throwing the farm at him to get him to the RFC.....
