Is this your boy?

and just for everyone else, Matty is someone that myself and DABM have discussed before in PMs. He is a kid who has grown up at the cricket club I play at...he is not my actual son, he is "my boy" in regards to whom I was discussing DABM...was just reading this thread again and can kind of see where some confusion may come from

Awful article that again further ignores South Australian players. Twomey notoriously underrates or ignores South Australians and I don't know why. We've won the last two champs, and will make the final this year. It's an excellent crop this year from us, and along with vic country we should dominate the champs again.

Let me know what we're after and I'll suggest some names. Personally I'd be thinking outside mids with both speed and skills is the #1, 2 and 3 need along with bookends.

The two Darcy's please, Tucker & Parrish, both the complete package........unfortunately they'll probably be long gone unless we have an ordinary season....

Schache would come in handy up forward???

That guy.

Very talented sportsman but looks like making it in footy. Whilst he is six four going six five he is so quick it is not without chance he ends up playing midfield minutes

I've watched a lot of Allen and I'm not sold. He's 193/97 so already a brick shithouse and physically imposing and a lot of his work is by virtue of that. He's okay on the lead and at ground level but hasn't looked particularly quick despite what you've said. Reece McKenzie last year looked as slow as they come but registered an elite sprint time, maybe Allen is similar; in a match setting he's slow but on a track he's quick. Through the midfield he's looked a little quiet. Reminds me a little of Matt Panos, a lot to prove in the champs though.

Stephen Tahana

North Adelaide/South Australia
2/2/97
182cm/72kg
Half-back
With a bounce and stretch in his marking and sublime speed on the ground, Tahana offers plenty of drive off half-back. The South Australian has already played senior football with North Adelaide in the SANFL, and shown his bravery in the air. Tahana backs himself, takes players on and uses his pace to effect (he has ran a 2.89-second 20-metre sprint).

I WANT!

Darcy parish - zippy, classy mid

Otherwise one of the tall forwards > 194cm - who is your favourite?

The two Darcy's - Parish and Tucker - sound perfect.

Tucker being a lefty - and a Vic Metro boy who is NOT a Geelong Falcon - makes me even more interested.

Weideman is intriguing.

Is Josh Hone eligible this year ??? Playing some very very good footy for Sturt.

You are correct on all counts. Twomey ignores and then jumps on SA players at the last minute.

I'm really interested in Matt Allen. I wonder if we could ship Tom Lynch as part of an Aish trade and bring in Matt? He's 193cm tall, runs incredible times and can play in the midfield as well as being a very good forward.

Do you rate him Skippos?

EDIT: Sorry wrote this before I read through the rest of the thread! Ignore Skippos as you've already answered above.

I've heard similar comments. It will be interesting as I suspect the SA U18 team are going to use him as a deep forward/midfield rotation primarily, but might also use him as CHF at times. He will get his chance to impress. I think he is similar to Petracca, you see Panos. Somewhere in between might be right!

He does look like he isn't moving quick, but I suspect it is because of his size and lopping running style. Did you know that in the U18 trial on Saturday, Allen was top two in the average metres per minute run through the game. He does cover the ground well.

I think he could make a very good career as a high forward.

Darcy Tucker is originally a Horsham boy, moved to Ballarat to train/play with the Ballarat Rebels a couple of years ago, Captain this season. IMO as good or better than Brad Crouch but with immaculate foot skills...future gun and by all reports an outstanding character youngster much in the Jake Lever mould.
Only way I can see him still being around at our pick would be [dread the thought] if we get a compo pick....

Any compo comes after our original pick

I meant as a "bundle", doubt very much we would get Darcy Tucker [who is deadest jet with elite disposal] or Darcy Parrish for that matter with just our 1st pick, both have all the hallmarks of future elite players.

Tahana can be a stephen hill type player

I disagree. Tahana is your elite, elite small defensive defender. Think Nick Smith. He's got that defensive intensity and elite closing speed to blanket and borderline tag the best small forwards. Offensively he doesn't run and carry as much as someone with his athletic gifts should. He's very much a small defender who defends first. I expect him to play 200 good games but never be a dream team type or someone who dominates through the middle.

Like the idea that a KPF who runs through the middle and is averaging 5 goals a match isn't rated as a draft prospect

It's not a case of ignoring his stats but a case of paying attention to where he gets them. He's playing under 18s. He's 97 kilos. To put it in perspective - the best under 18 KPDs are playing league (Francis) or reserves (Westhoff). He's matching up every week on players who have no experience at a higher level, who aren't likely to ever play AFL nor are they in the best junior defenders in the state, and are unlikely to make the SANFL grade either. The average defender he plays on is a 16-17 year old kid who'll play some reserves in a year or three and then go and play club footy. They're 75-80 kilos and still going through puberty. If you were 97 kilos of predominantly muscle, a brick shithouse and relatively quick and fit you'd absolutely monster them. If Allen is even a rookie draft prospect I'd be expecting 6-8 shots per game from him on average at that level. In 18s you don't play on the reserves standard defenders who've got experience at matching up on beefcakes and players with large tanks and are also more physically developed. He hasn't been tested matching up on any player nearing AFL standard or physique.

The test for Allen will be at the champs where he'll match up on players who are more physically developed and more naturally gifted footballers. If he dominates there - then yeah, he'll join the conversation and rightly so. If he gets up to reserves (as he should) and dominates there - then yeah, I'll come to his party. But I suspect he might be exposed a little.
