Which one of those would you trust to shutdown Betts, Cameron, Ryan, Papley, Elliott, Rankine/Sexton, which ever Richmond small has chosen to get off the chain against us?

None of them, but theres very few who can in the league. Even Richmond got cut up by Cameron in the finals. Cut their supply through the middle and get over to support like the good teams do.

I think that it might be a valid view to go into this next season with a particular unaddressed weakness against small forwards knowing that we certainly aren't going to be challenging anyway. It certainly seems to me to be an area that we can address once we get our midfield and key positions a bit more sorted this year.

There's so much talk in this thread about Cox, Perkins, Reid and ODriscoll that I'm starting to develop this horrible feeling we'll call out Bruhn or Thilthorpe. If we pick up either of those two and trade for Pick 16 and F1, then miss ODriscoll, I'll spew.

Then I'll probably do a bit more research but I'll still be spewing in the short term.
If we get Thilthorpe ahead of O'Driscoll, I'll be spewing too.

Admittedly that's more likely to be because I was celebrating too hard on draft night that Thilthorpe slid to our picks.

You guys realise that Stone is a similar type to Perkins?

It looks a bit silly to complain that we are looking at a medium forward, when a consensus pick on this thread is a medium forward. Perkins has only 1 NAB league game where he had 20 disposals and had 8 clearances in the entire year.

If we want players who have midfield experience we should look at Poulter, O'Driscoll or Carroll.
A marking small is much more important than many give it credit for.

Laverde is alwats broken, Stringer we're waitin to get him back to his best, Langford plays wing more than forward now, Fantasia has gone, Snelling is a bit parts player, Ham is not that player, Townsend is also gone. Zaka is 30 so not getting younger. Parish is midfielder learning the forward craft. Devon Smith is an almost player. Hind is a small, ditto Moz who is also injured. Guelfi is our #1 small lock down defender. That leaves us with kids like Jones, Cahil who is a small anyway. And lets not forget Tippa who is a small forward, we just have a propensity to kick it on his head.

tl;dr? A marking small/medium forward who could push up onto a wing in time is a bit more important than most give it credit for.

Thilthorpe would be amazing

Yep. It boosts our ability to mark the ball through the midfield and gives us multiple targets inside 50 at all times.
If we draft Perkins, McInnes and Cox, our marking around the ground receives a significant boost. If we get Thilthorpe instead of Cox, that would be even better because it means Wright permanently plays forward with Stewart.

It gives us Stewart, Wright, Draper, Laverde, Langford, Thilthorpe/Cox, McInnes, Perkins and Stringer who are all able to rotate up the ground + provide a marking target in the forward line in case we have injuries. Much better than anything we had the last couple of years.

Once Perkins and McInnes are ready to be mids, our midfield balance is restored.

One thing that eth-dog brought up during the year was our inability of genuine wingers, marking types anyway. This is where the development and transition of a guy like Langford has been on full display.

Essington took the long way with Kyle by trying his frame as a big bodied mid but found his niche on a wing after starting out as a marking forward. If we could draft/develop another 2 on our list that would be ideal. one on a forward flank as well. We brought in Jones last year but isn't he more a taller medium than a small tall (think Jack Darling as a small tall whilst our own Jayden Laverde is a taller medium imho).

These guys I want are hard working marking types, ones who could average 4 - 6 marks a game and even a goal a game. Feels like we haven't had a top notch one since Fantasia (even though he is a smaller version of what I want) played some serious football in 2017.

I'd love Perkins to eventually become a dominant inside mid but can accept that he may be a decent HFF. This is why I would love us to double up on mids, trade back and grab O'Driscoll later in the first round.

My best case scenario for our draft haul would be;

6. Archie Perkins
7. Nic Cox/Zac Reid (I don't really know the difference between them so whatever one suits us better)
8. threaten to bid on McInes and then trade back with Collingwood for future 1st and 16
16. Nathan O'Driscoll
44. Corey Durdin
Josh Eyre bid matched
Cody Brand bid matched

I wish the club would grow a set of balls and skip out on re drafting both Clarke and Gleeson. Clarke isn't going to make it. Pay him out, public knowledge shows we have money in the salary cap, an extra rookie wage on top of what we would pay Dylan should be well within our cap space. Gleeson at least has runs on the board at AFL level albeit many, many moons ago. Provides depth in a position of need whilst Clarke has done ok, is constantly played out of position and is more than unlikely than likely to make it so cut out losses and move on.

Then draft one of a raft of small/medium defenders who did well in the SANFL this year. Duvaal my pick of the bunch.

Not sure McInnes would be invested if we draft him. Reading the Collingwood board, He has apparently recently followed the CFC and a couple of dozen of their players on Twitter. If so, his mind is set. Things may come crashing down.

Lots of talk on here about needing some medium sized players who can mark the ball but not much talk of Henry who’s arguably the best mid sized (188cm) overhead player in the draft.
Would like to see us go
6. Perkins
7. Cox
8. Henry

I Think Henry fills a serious need as medium sized player who can take marks and could easily develop into a goal kicking forward or a intercepting back with Ridley. He could even eventually find a spot like Langford on a wing/midfield.

medium marking defenders is probably the one area of the ground we don't need to address.

Ridley, Francis, Heppell and Redman at a stretch.

That's why I want Cox over Reid. Cox genuinely has a future as a 2-metre winger with his endurance and speed. He is also fairly close to filling out. Reid will hold down a post as a genuine KPD, but you can find those types at pick 60.

Yeah Clarke becomes redundant in a way if we're looking at selecting Kyle Dunkley, which I hope we do.

There's no way a draftee would be disinterested because someone else picked him up.
He is probably expecting to be picked up by Collingwood so of course he is going to prepare himself to play for them. It's like saying JUH is preparing to play for Bulldogs, which is the obvious thing to do. If we pick him up, then he'd gladly take his opportunity to play at AFL level. With list cuts, I highly doubt he'd just sit there sulking. In fact, it's a compliment that another team was willing to use a top 10 pick to select him.

That sounds like Ollie Henry to me. A combo of him, Perkins and either Cox or Reid I’m good with

Is Henry a forward or defender? probably lazy on my end but I was under the impression he was a defender like his borhter?

If he's a hard working forward then absolutely comes into play. My apologies if the two have been mixed up

More a forward but seems very capable going back aswell (Has played back). I think he could work at either end.

Hes a classy kick mark type of player. Gunston/Fritsch was a good comparison, he has super strong hands for a mark and seems to have a fairly good leap. Hes class by foot and decision making when back looked good on the highlights but only highlights.

I liked what i saw from him in his willingness to chsse and defend for a player like him. I think clubs will see that he could be a small forwar like Rozee in the first few years or if he goes to the right club like us i wouldnt be against using him across half back early in his development

The issue with him is whether he can become more than a 1.5 goal a game fwd with 8-10 disposals next to his name. I think clubs this year wouldve been crying out to see what he could do in the middle in spurts

if he's a forward first and foremost then perhaps he comes right into our reckoning.

According to the 2020 AFL Draft Guide - He's considered to be a medium utility capable of playing both forward and back already and some scope for other positions as well. It says his bread and butter is his aerial work. It said he kicked 18 goals in 15 games (last year) whilst still spending time in defense. So it really sounds like he's a genuine utility rather than settled in one role or the other - would probably know more if he'd played this year.

I also think you may be overrating our current medium sized marking options. Ridley yes. Heppell legit hasn't played defense since about his second year. Redman is more a small and is training with our forwards group. Francis didn't do a whole lot on the marking front last year and and is a smaller KP. Even as a defender we could still use a high quality marking type to play on the types of guys that Gleeson used to that's also versatile enough to go small or tall when required.

I think scoreboard impact players will be high on our list yes and then his ability to maybe play as a class set up the play half back as turn B would also be super appealing, its literally 2 massive holes on our list and he suits both of them.

I think N.Cox is basically locked in hes been consistently talked with us for some time now. Then i hope Perkins aswell then the 3rd a decision between Mcinnes, Henry, Stone as similar sorts or grab a bonafide midfielder for one in Powell, Macrae or Bruhn.

All I'm saying is he may be in for a world of disappointment, although Collingwood seems to be as much a basketcase as we are.

In saying that, our medium marking forwards appear to be less quantified than our defensive equivalent.

I agree with this generally. Our inability to take marks anywhere but half back killed us this season. Marking medium forwards and wings are a need for us.

On this note I think we should still be looking hard at Poulter. Watch the footage, you can just tell he is going to be a powerful wing or inside midfielder when he fully develops.
