Dodo mentions a couple of times that we’re thinking long term with our drafting. I’m very heartened to hear that. No more shortcuts.
Didnt we think Long term about 2005-08 with the Ryder, Hurley, Hooker, TBC ?

It failed once, therefore we must never try to build a spine again.
Ah yeah, point taken and mind changed. As an aside, I wonder how long term our thinking was in that period when we brought in Camporeale and Mal Michael?

Starting with the spine isn't necessarily the be all and end all approach though. An example was made of David Noble's approach last night, filling out with midfield options at North in a similar approach to the Brisbane rebuild.

This may also be based on the public top 4 within 3 years. Might think their spine can hang around to get to his next contract. And extracting the ball gives them greater opportunity to put point on the board early

Brisbane and North were/are more certain that the talls they had were gonna be good then we are, which is fine. It helps a lot with rebuilds when you have amazing rucks like Martin and Goldstein and have emerging young talls like Hipwood and Larkey.

It's also an echo of Melbourne under Roos - the first aim is to simply be competitive.

Now that the draft is done and the list is complete, could someone in a position of power get our IT dept off their arses and remove the mug shots of JD, Raz, Saad etc from our website. They have been gone for months. They managed to remove Whoosha pretty quickly.

Probably not to the extent we have in this draft. Anyway 2012 destroyed any long term we where going to get from them.

You can go different ways that is for sure but I think this year was just different as well. 3 early picks and a draft that had some depth in the KP players along with the fact that most of the top end midfielders where the smaller type. In the end with the picks we had we really had to go the way we did. I suspect if Hollands had of been available we would have gone with him , Cox and Perkins.

Probably the ship has sailed as everyone else will be asking the question of him now. But you never know. Hopefully the Dogs struggle to repair things and he presses to get out more strongly next time around and still favours us.

He’ll be a RFA by the time his contract finishes, so I guess we’d have to cough a pick anyway wouldn’t we?

He doesn't become a free agent for a while. Like I think it's a couple years after his current contract expires in 2022 that he'll qualify for RFA status.

He’ll def be a RFA by the time his contract expires. So I guess the only we’d get him on the cheap is if they dogs didn’t match an offer or alternatively he could walk to the PSD if he wanted out!

Free agency kicks in at eight years. When Dunkley's contract ends, he'll only have been in the league for seven.

Your point being?
Didnt work too well last time drafting tall def/rucks with early picks

Lets see how this works out if they cant eventuate into anything more

Not against building a spine i think the dominos were in place already. I was happy to take one and that one being the most likely to become a fwd being probably Cox it sounded like

Francis, drafted tall, Draper, Wright, HJ, Bryan

BZT also and any irish talltall

But the club knows more maybe Heppell is fine, Zerrett staying and Francis is out the door with Ambrose cooked who knows. They know more and if that were the case id be taking 2 talls

Conversely it was somewhat disheartening to see a few punters criticising our draft picks for not having an impact next year. I feel like that is missing the point of the draft though, unless you draft a Matt Rowell it's highly unlikely anyone picked last night is going to make a material difference to how their side goes next year.

You realise our tall stocks are basically an almost retired Hooker in his last season, Hurley and Ambrose who aren’t too far behind.

A returning from long term injury James Stewart. Whichever Irishman is tall, Jones and Bryan haven’t played a game. Draper has played about 4. BZT has played a handful and been unconvincing.

We’ve also lost Daniher and replaced him with a guy who wasn’t getting a game at Gold Coast.

We most definitely need KPP’s and had the picks in a draft where best available at those selections were clearly the KPP’s.

How so ? Sure there where some that did not make it but Ryder , Hurley , Hooker , Carlisle , Bellchambers where all very good. The reason it did not work out so well is hardly going to happen again. I would be tipping that if 5 out of this years KP players and Jones / Bryan end up being of similar quality we will be doing well in 4 years.

Talls take time, mids come on a lot quicker, it’s an absolute no brainer given our lack of young KPP. Next year will no doubt be a mid plus Dunks will still be on the cards!
And to follow that up right now there are not a lot of KP players in peoples top 30 next year. That will obviously change once they start playing again but it looks like a strong midfield draft next year.

so hypothetically what would we pony up for him. Any trade required with dogs?
Ideally he negs the **** out of them next year and demands that they give him a similar deal to the one we were offering, or he'll request a trade again. They can't fulfil his request due to Treloar taking up space in their cap, so they trade him to us for a single first rounder or (and this is incredibly unlikely) two second rounders.

Realistically, though it'll probably cost us a first and second rounder (which was apparently our final offer this go around) and they'll accept it since there's no NGA kid around this time to absorb that pick and it'll be more then they'd get for him in 2022.

I do realise that as i said we had the dominos in place. Hurley and Ambrose have plenty of time left in them if we need.

Its no wonder the best players in the comp are the front half players inwouldve liked 2 darts at that instead of the one

We drafted a bunch of Begley, Mutch, D.Clarke a couple years ago and have never been replaced. Add to that the loss of Saad, Mckenna, Fantasia and Heppell is as close done as Ambrose and Zacka is definitely as close as Hooker

I also question how much influence talls in the back half have on games

I also think Stringer is an extremelly viable 2nd tall and Francis 2nd tall back whilst Ridkey and Redman dont lack in size compared to Grimes/Vlastuin types they just need to get stronger which is where there 4 years behind those guys in age

Just my call i have a differing opinion to most now it seems however the majority agreed beforehand
