If we end up with 6,7,8 (big if), trade 6 to geelong for 2 of their 1sts - they’ll probably want to grab Bruhn.

At this stage I’d go
7 - Phillips
8 - Cox/Reid
Geelong 1 - Perkins/Carroll
Geelong 2 - Trew/O’driscoll
Thankfully it seems unlikely that Phillips lasts to us so we don't **** up and take him

How’s it unlikely he lasts to us? I know you don’t want another small mid, but trust he’s type of person both on and off the field that we need. There’s no point reaching on a taller mid early in the draft just because we need one. Have you watched his highlights video, he’d be our toughest mid already.

Yes if we somehow end up with picks in the teens. Would also be tempted to bid on lachie jones if we have a couple of top 10 picks.
I would love Jones for our backline.

With McInnes, what do you see as his future role? Midfield, flanks or KPP?

I was looking at him as a possible midfielder but then I realised that he might end up being 194 or 195cm. Then I started thinking he might end up being a KPP.

Looks likely that Adelaide get pick 2 fpr Crouch which means another pick before ours.

Yes, a 180 cm midfielder alongside Shiel, Smith, Merrett, McGrath and Parish is exactly what the club needs. The best small midfielders aren't surrounded by fellow short people...

And yes, I have. And it makes me scared because Dodoro loves picking undersized midfielders. Like everyone criticizes for "trying to turn flankers into mids"but not as much as he loves picking undersized mids.

How’s he an “undersized mid” When majority of mids are around 179-183cm would it be regular sized mid? Adelaide aren’t getting pick 2, for 1 no one is going to pay him that much and also the league won’t do that to north, they don’t want them being a basket case.

He’ll be a mid long term imo, but he might start off on a flank at either end.

If you look at the average height of the midfields in finals this year it's around the 184 cm mark, so yeah, 180cm is undersized.

Here's one I prepared earlier:
AFL midfielders:

185 cm is average, 181 and 189 are each one standard deviation away from the mean.

this is how i'd approach it.
If we could perhaps turn some later picks into the Dogs' 1st too.
Go Phillips then fix the book ends with Cox and Reid. Use the next 2 on the bigger inside mids.

If we're going to have that many picks, then I can see the club trade some for next year's picks, which is reportedly a stronger draft.

Nope. I wouldn't take Lachie Neale, the best midfielder in the game this year, at Essendon.
Well that’s just a terrible take. Merrett wont be there either next year or the year after. Wouldn’t be surprised if Parish leaves at the end of next year aswell. As if said before if we can find a bigger body during trade week, Phillips is a great option. If Victorians hadve played this year he would’ve gone top 2-3, he’ll be one of the best value picks of the first round.

i get the knock on Phillips.
Another sub-185cm mid.

Size & weight are one element
Drafting kids with the right mentality to take us forward needs to be high on our list

hard working, consistent, tough, physical

these are attributes i'd like to be reading more often.

Is it? Our midfield consistently gets beaten around the ball. I'm not denying that they're good, but look who surrounds them. Rowell played alongside Greenwood, Anderson and Swallow. Neale plays alongside Berry, Ellis-Yolmen and Lyons protecting them at a stoppage.

Do you honestly think either would be anywhere near as effective in our midfield without the same protection?

Have you not read what I’ve said constantly. Get a big body during trade week then draft Phillips....

One big body to get Phillips is just as stupid. Any midfielder under 6'1"is an automatic no. No matter how good they are.

can add Phillips if we build the protection around him (and Parish/McGrath/Merrett).

trade period will be big here, but there's a few bigger mids that can come from the other picks too.
need to really plan out that the next few drafts we'll have good picks to really build the list out. think further out than just this draft.

Blakely, O’halloran, ely smith, Constable. There’s plenty out there. How’s it an automatic no when merrett won’t be here long term, there’s no chance he’s signs as a free agent.
Say we grabbed smith and blakely
Stringer - 193cm
Blakely - 188cm
heppell - 188cm
Smith - 187cm
Shiel- 182cm
Parish 181cm
Phillips - 180cm
McGrath - 178cm

what’s wrong with that grouping?

They aren't big enough! That's the point. At this stage he can't be added without getting rid of at least two of the blokes you mentioned.

Because it's unbalanced even if we lose Merrett.

Your solution is essentially a one-for-one swap to an unbalanced midfield. AA defines madness as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
