Personally I’m really sick of having a sh*t midfield for two decades. Either way it’s going to be hard to win a flag with deficiencies, but I think a great midfield in isolation can get you places great kpp can’t in isolation. Get a great midfield in place and it’s much easier to spot fix KPP holes.

Yeh i think you obviously need a combination of both especially forward of the pill.

I also think with Free Agency the plan should be to draft smalls/mediums in the front half of the field and pick up key fwd free agents after 8 years like Lynch, J.Cameron ect

Basically what the tigers did and cats have now done whether it was a plan or not.

Key fwds on avg do take 4-5 years to really have significant impact whereas mids impact year 2-3 quite comfortabley now

The list has gaps and we're never going to fill them all in a single draft.

People say next year is a good draft for midfielders, and we have a good draft hand to grab 2 of the best few KPPs in the current draft. Seems fairly logical to get them while they're available.
Im only grabbing 2 at best if Thilthorpe is one of them

3/5 KPPs is plenty from a draft

Picked Bryan and H.Jones last year traded in P.Wright. We have plenty.

Some tidbits from Cal yesterday with a road to the draft dropping today at lunch time

  • The clubs at the top are interested in DGB - but only a couple will be able to get close. He's not getting out of the top five. Sydney, Hawthorn and Suns in the mix for the best key back in it.
  • Cox is versatile but I get your point about not being a proven player in any locked down spot. It's also a bonus and think he can settle in at either end of the ground. Darcy Moore wasn't proven in his position coming through. The difference between Cox and Aaron Francis is Cox has genuine running ability and works - his brilliant six-minute run in the 2km time trial showed that. Essendon, GWS, Adelaide among the clubs having a look.
  • Collingwood would certainly have an eye on Zach Reid. I don't think he gets to their first pick 14 unless they trade up the order. Key defender who uses the ball well.
  • Port will be matching the bid for Lachie Jones. Don't stress, Port fans, he's headed your way. Even if Essendon bid at 6 (Let's get them back for Ryder)
  • Will Phillips is a chance to get to Essendon's pick but it will require a wildcard coming into the Fantastic Five - which is a possibility. That's probably dependant on Archie Perkins zooming up and taking one of those early spots to squeeze Phillips back a spot or two. Essendon would have to take him if that happened. (That's not good new maybe it means perkins at 4, Hollands at 5)
  • Hawks have been linked to a possible bid for Braeden Campbell from the Swans' Academy. For me it's a bit early, but we'll see how that goes. Will Phillips is right in their mix, as is Elijah Hollands and Denver Grainger-Barras, while they have spent plenty of time on Archie Perkins.
  • In the end I can't see the top-five picks changing hands, but the likes of Collingwood and Brisbane will look for deals involving future picks.
  • Cox and Reid are different, but both 200cm+ talls who will take some time to develop. Cox is a great kick on both feet, Reid a great kick on one foot. Cox's versatility may give him the edge but Reid has shown some very good things too.
  • Tanner Bruhn I have most likely from 8-16 range of the draft. He hasn't been linked as strongly to Essendon as others, but he will get snapped up in the second half of the first round if he gets through.
  • Tanner is in that basket because clubs are split on him. When clubs are split on players, they can easily go early or slide through a bit. The split is not about his talent but because he just hasn't played as much footy as others so there's less to assess him on. That's why if he doesn't get grabbed early (I don't think he's in the top five) then he could get through a few picks.
  • Essendon has been linked to a possible bid for Reef McInnes - which would be very interesting if it went that way. Is he a tall mid or a third tall defender/forward? Either way he's got some ability. I think there are others who will still be on the board at their picks that I'd take ahead but it has certainly done the rounds a bit
  • Think Perkins is the top-five chance that may have surprised some, don't see Powell getting into that mix. I have Powell going in the 10-20 range.
  • Lots of Archie questions today! He's a half-forward who this year had trained and built up his body to play permanently in the midfield. I think that's where he'll be doing his damage as an AFL player, with stints in attack, even though it might start the other way around.
  • North will get a very good player at 2. Thilthorpe, Hollands and McDonald all shaping as the options there. At 11 they will also be in a good position to likely grab a midfielder.
  • Can't see the Phillips/Perkins double rocking up to Tullamarine unless as you say Cox was the late bolter. But I don't think that will happen.

Out of the "Fantastic 5" the only one who I would like to slip to us at 6 (just cant see McDonald, DGB slipping) would be Hollands. The downside is that for that to happen it more than likely means that Perkins has risen into the top picks or perhaps maybe Cox. Cant see any others possibly in the mix to surprise. Phillips although still undersized for our list needs would probably provide more leadership qualities than the others however on a positive side.

Based on Collingwood liking Reid, if we take Cox and Perkins, you would think Collingwood would look to trading for our pick 8, particularly if it also stops a bid on McInnes

I have a feeling the 'Reef Mcinness bid coming at 8 doing the rounds' is to get the pies to do the trade up. Its so Dodoro it aint funny.

It makes too much sense to trade pick 8 to the pies if Reid is still on the board for their F1 + 2nd pick this year 16/18

Could be a huge win for us. Id take a Cook or Odriscoll there. Even Bruhn or T.Powell if theyre available.

Id say at 6/7 were getting 1 of Hollands/Perkins and N.Cox

Could be a perfect draft for us. The 2020/21 drafts if we get the deal done with the pies could set us up really nicely in 3 years time from now

Yep agree with all of this.

Throw in Eyre and Brand as late round picks with decent potential and a 20 year old Caldwell and we've really kick started our rebuild nicely from a pretty poor position intially.

Maybe even try to add in a 2021 Third to Collingwood to help for Daicos and we get something to help for Brand/Eyre

I think we would add maybe a 2021 3rd (ports not ours). I think we have plenty of points for the NGA kids. Have 44 and all the late picks will only increase in value as the draft rolls on and the matching of bids sucks up picks elsewhere

Might have to be the other way If McInnes goes after pick 14/16 then Collingwood don't really have many points left. So maybe we would give them 44 and get another future back.

I'm not sure about this but I'm sure someone can help me but if Collingwood don't have enough points for McInnes do the additional points come off their 2021 first? Which would hurt us? If we don't have enough for Brand/Eyre the points would come off our future pick in the round they were taken in, is that right?

We could also trade futures with other teams to get more points for Brand and Eyre if need be.

i imagine if they trade it to us, it's protected at that point.
And they'd cop the deficit elsewhere.

I dont believe they then cop any deficit

GWS i believe were in deficit for Tom Green but even with picks from the cats and compo for Zac Williams they dont cop anything because they didnt oroginally have a 1st round draft pick

Would Gold Coast not do the deal with 5 instead with the pies first this year and first next year?

That might be the kicker stopping it all. Might well mean Phillips, Perkins and Z.Reid/N.Cox for us which would be decent for us and all different types but no future 1st

There will be plenty more pick swaps though

Gold Coast i dont think are using 27? That will likely be swapped for a future 2nd

GWS likewise with pick 52 which is handy points (Will likely come in a bit aswell)

Unless Thilthorpe slides, I would genuinely go three mids with the top 10s. We've never had a strong (and balanced) midfield, and I don't see the point in using a top 10 on a KPD. Might also give us room to trade a pick down slightly and improve our position elsewhere.
Don’t see the point of taking 3 mids and reaching on a couple, in a draft that has lots of kp talent.

Plus the depth of midfield talent supposedly in next years draft, and the follow up crack we'll likely have at dunkley.

If the pies get into 5 to grab cox, wouldnt bother me if we were to land phillips, perkins and another mid like o'driscoll or bruhn though.

Gws have a future 1st and some later 1st rd picks this year.
Could be an option there

Totally agree - also we don't even have that many open spots in our midfield and the players in there are all seasoned. So if we drafted 3 young mids they wouldn't be playing for ages (unless they were instant sensations or playing in other roles for years). We may be picking up lots of KP prospects but our KP's are from settled. We have several about to retire and then a lot of unproven guys.

We aren't going to be going into many drafts with multiple top 10 picks with 200cm blokes on the board. Its particularly valuable since Francis is a smaller KP (some don't even regard him as a KP at all - which i disagree with) then Hurley is nearly done and is smaller too and then you have BZT who is iffy to make it and despite bulking up still can't really handle a Hawkins type. Considering more and more forwards are getting drafted at 197+cm its kind of concerning. The extra advantage is that Cox and Reid can actually kick and long accurate kicks in defense is only going to become more valuable as the kick in rules become more generous.

I'd argue we don't need lots of midfielders - we actually just need an elite or two extra - preferably one that helps us balance out the rest of the midfield.
If we had an in his prime Jobe Watson we'd actually have a very good midfield next year. There's every chance that our midfield will organically be better than last year too since there's a number of young players in there that still have improvement (McGrath, Parish, Caldwell perhaps Langford) in them not to mention Draper is really just getting started. No one is really old enough to decline.

Cals latest update
  • DGB most likely going to Swans at 3
  • Reid good user of the footy and Essendon apparently looking at him
  • Cody Brand 4th best tall defender
  • Nik Cox 5th best tall defender
  • Essendon in the mix for Perkins/Reid/Cox unlikely for someone to spit out of the fantastic 5 if it is anyone it will be Hollands/Phillips
  • Essendon unlikely to bid on Reef and Collingwood may not accept
  • Top 5 are still even
  • GC would take who ever is left out the fantastic 5
  • Bruhn has slipped to 13-19
  • If we do move up probably not till draft night
  • DGB could be the best player in the draft, Crows unlikely to go him at one
