He just threw Cox in at 5 because he'd listed him as a forward in the previous episode.
He has Brand ahead of Cox as a defender
Which is strange because cox is a way better KPD prospect. Twomey keeps sayin he’s a forward, he obviously hasn’t watched 90% of his games where he’s played in defence.

Totally agree - also we don't even have that many open spots in our midfield and the players in there are all seasoned. So if we drafted 3 young mids they wouldn't be playing for ages (unless they were instant sensations or playing in other roles for years). We may be picking up lots of KP prospects but our KP's are from settled. We have several about to retire and then a lot of unproven guys.

We aren't going to be going into many drafts with multiple top 10 picks with 200cm blokes on the board. Its particularly valuable since Francis is a smaller KP (some don't even regard him as a KP at all - which i disagree with) then Hurley is nearly done and is smaller too and then you have BZT who is iffy to make it and despite bulking up still can't really handle a Hawkins type. Considering more and more forwards are getting drafted at 197+cm its kind of concerning. The extra advantage is that Cox and Reid can actually kick and long accurate kicks in defense is only going to become more valuable as the kick in rules become more generous.

I'd argue we don't need lots of midfielders - we actually just need an elite or two extra - preferably one that helps us balance out the rest of the midfield.
If we had an in his prime Jobe Watson we'd actually have a very good midfield next year. There's every chance that our midfield will organically be better than last year too since there's a number of young players in there that still have improvement (McGrath, Parish, Caldwell perhaps Langford) in them not to mention Draper is really just getting started. No one is really old enough to decline.

Agree with this

It needs to be a mix of 1/2 or 2/1 Talls/Smalls.

However most genuine mids start half forward/wing/half back. Bailey Smith started as a half forward in what was a quality midfield better than our top end but maybe slightly less in depth. Brayshaw HFF, Cerra HFF/HBF.

Zac Merrett, Mcgrath, Shiel, Heppell, Parish, Caldwell, Langford as you said are all young or have plenty of years left in them. I have no doubt Heppell is still playing in 3 years time aswell

There are spots open in our current side for kids to walk into up forward, half back.

Its 2 smalls and 1 tall for me. Id strongly consider 2 Talls if Thilthorpe and N.Cox are there but not Reid and N.Cox

Hurley
Hooker
Ambrose
BZT
Francis
Brand
N.Bryan
Eyre
Z.Reid
N.Cox

Draper
A.Phillips
N.Bryan

P.Wright
J.Stewart
Stringer
H.Jones
N.Bryan
Eyre
N.Cox

For me thats excessive with talls in a shortened list

Maybe so but he has a lot of people inside the game he can talk to who are very good judges.
Biggest help for me when I was looking at a lot of players was to have the views of various people. Did not always agree but it gave perspective.
Lots of people seem to Bag Cal but I know for a fact he does watch a decent amount of junior footy. Maybe not as much as some do but he does see games. Unlike a lot he gets a truck load of inside info from recruiters about players which obviously contain different views on certain players.
I remember back when the HS first went looking for their draft expert as I got an email from them to be interviewed. At the time I was doing some stuff for the VFL record and a few other bits but I had no real journalistic experience and have limited ability in putting stories together and interviewing draft hopefuls .

Maybe he was training as a forward this preseason and as an underager played back?
Nope he trained to play as a their McGovern type defender setting up the play. I watched him dominate in the role in a preseason game in played in February. Was definitely goin to play as a back full time this year and that’s what he sees himself being.

Nope, your speaking to someone who actually watched a pre-season game that Cox played this year and I watched one the week after he did and Cox played CHB. Cox has played everywhere but mostly as a key defender or wingman.

So where is the forward ability that Twomey is writing about coming from?

He has played forward but it’s very limited compared to his time spent back and on the wing. He was 100% playing mostly down back this year

I know the conventional wisdom around here is that Brand and Eyre make talls less attractive in the first round.

However, I think the opportunity to have tall pairings forward and back that develop together is really exciting. Imagine Brand and Reid with 100 games experience together in the AFL and VFL teams as a defensive pairing. Imagine Cox and Eyre with 100 games experience together as a forward pair.

Well i suppose showing traits previous as a key forward is a sign in what recruiters might see in him. Very hard to become a key fwd these days especially when so skinny. I have no doubt he will start his career down back regardless

Stringers going to be playing as the deepest tall from 2022 onwards anyway

We do already have Jones as well but I like the idea.

Plus none of us are really sold on Francis or BZT. Jones and Bryan are still waiting to be blooded, and there's every chance they're busts like Gown and Crauford were (though Crauford was 110% a victim of list cuts and probably could have been someone had he had more time). Not to mention Hooker might end up retiring end of next year (he's out of contract end of next season at least).

I'm more than happy with us taking Cox and Reid this year.

Francis can seriously play i have no doubt in that

His final last year was ridiculously good

He needs things to be going right with the club and himself but hes a talent and very capable AFL player

Agree. Doesn't help that we consistently drop the bloke who has issues with mental health. If he was as bulletproof as Gleeson selection-wise then we actually have a large enough body of work from him to see some consistent footy.

Some of the kicks he makes, some of the marks he takes - he has the tools 100% imo.

They showed a clip of Cox kicking a goal on the Road to the Draft segment. Cal acknowledged he had him as a key defender but was pointing out he could go forward. Was probably a bit lazy to put Cox in top 5 key forwards but maybe it is simply really shallow after the main 3 or 4 KPFs. The main point seems to be the kid has game.

Oh, I agree. Was just using him to make the case that there wouldn't be anything wrong with us really loading up on key position players at this draft.

Youd hope anyone being talked about inside 10 has some game

Phillips, Perkins, downgrade with Collingwood for FF and then take Chapman at 16.

Can only say what Twomey is saying as he has the inside goss

But i can only see 1 of Perkins/Phillips getting through to 6 unless someone decides to jump early on N.Cox which is what you might be getting at here

Also wouldnt GC offer up a better deal to the pies than us? With pick 5

It seems freos man is Chapman, im not really much of a fan. But hard to see him getting past freo unless theyre keen on O'Driscoll

Twomey has done us no favours in talking up Brand there has he or that coming from AFL clubs isnt great for a bid inside the top 40 being quite likely. I was hopeful it was after and we could pick potentially a Shannon Neale with 44(39)

Any news on who you might take with your first three picks.... or at least who’s in the frame?
Perkins, Reid & Cox seem the most likely.
If any go early, we'd take who slips out of the top 5 instead.
Expect 2 of them on our list next year.

Perkins Reid cox

Unless someone drops
